Dd – dinosaurs

This week always lands up being very WILD and LOUD! Raaaawrrrrr!!!! Haha! A firm favourite with both boys and girls, we have had so much fun exploring the magical world of dinosaurs these two past weeks.

It is amazing how much the Pups already know about these amazing, legendary and extinct creatures… what IS IT about DINOSAURS?! We spoke about all sorts of dinosaurs and we were very impressed with the pronunciation of these little people. They could say brachiosaurus, tyrannosaurus, pterodactyl, triceratops… the list goes on! We learnt that some dinosaurs were soooo big and others were a lot smaller. Some had feathers and some had scales! Some could fly, some could swim, some walked on two legs and had tiny little arms and some walked on four legs and had really big feet like an elephant! Some had very long, sharp, scary teeth and they ate meat! We call them carnivores! Others had smaller teeth and ate plants and they are called herbivores! We don’t know exactly what the dinosaurs looked like but we think they looked something like lizards do now! So when we painted our dinosaur art this week, we made sure to make it very colourful! Oh what FUN we had!

Earlier in the week, we put out some green coloured rice – the colour of the week – for the children. (Recipe: put rice in a plastic packet, squirt some acrylic paint onto it and smoosh it all over the rice, covering it completely, then spread it on a tray to dry for an hour or so – it will colour the rice vividly, wont stain hands and will keep forever if stored in an airtight container and it keeps them busy for ages – win!) They spent a long time playing with it and making homes for the dinosaurs and feeling the awesome, calming textures of it in their hands. They loved this activity and it is so good for their sensory development and imagination.

We painted some cardboard dinosaurs and then gave the children some string, with their teachers help they learnt how to wrap the string around the dinosaur, quite a difficult technique that seems very simple to do, some of our Pups grasped it while others didn’t, this is a simple and great activity to do at home with your Pup.

Then we made some cool dinosaur crowns that they painted.

We have had a fantastic two weeks but we can tell the children are tired, sick of winter and in need of a break! Please remember to fill in your holiday club forms if you want your child to attend holiday club. Please remember to label EVERYTHING that comes to school with your child that could ever possibly be taken off them. Please also remember to cut nails. Some nails grow very fast in this class and an unintentional accident can happen in a second. With short nails, a scratching incident is easily sorted out.

Next theme: Term 3 – Spring flowers and planting.

Nn – Night

This is one of the SCHOOL’S favorite themes! We love how much room for exploration and learning there is with this theme. With that being said, Space is a pretty difficult concept to explain to a 2-year-old! It is difficult to get them to understand that they live in a country called South Africa, never mind a planet called Earth, in a galaxy that is bigger than they could ever understand! So, we spent a lot of time talking about things that they do understand because they can SEE them, such as stars, rockets, the moon and astronauts! We spoke about the planets and the solar system, and we feel that they really did understand the concepts we were trying to get across!

We tried something a bit different with our art this week. Instead of sending home another picture of a star or the moon, we experimented with loose parts. The teachers went to the art studio and gathered anything that looked “spacey” and invited the children to make a galaxy, or the night sky. We watched how differently the children approached this task and it was fascinating. Some picked up everything they could find and just placed it all together on the felt. Others picked items very deliberately and placed them with such purpose, only focusing on one or two of the parts provided. When it was time to clear away, some stayed behind to sort the parts back into their containers while others ran off! It was so interesting and a fantastic fine motor activity. We are sure this sparked so much interest and creativity in them and we encourage you to do similar activities at home. Added bonus: no mess!

We also used a toilet paper roll to make an alien … they look so cool!

Have a lovely, relaxed weekend.

See you on Monday!

Ll – Lizard

Wow! What a busy, busy week we have had! Where do I even begin!?

We started off the week by making the cutest tortoises, which of course we have kept for art expo so they can be on show for everyone to see. The Pups loved painting the “shells” all the different earthy colours, and teacher Cecilia helped with sticking the heads, eyes and legs wherever they showed her too. The Pups loved learning about all the reptiles and at ring time most of the Pups could tell me the names of the reptiles on the theme board. We learnt that reptiles have scaly skins and that they are usually found under rocks or basking in the warm sun.

Julian from the Wild Ones put on a lovely reptile show for us on Thursday, he came with all the different types of reptiles, insects, rodents and many other animals. The Pups thoroughly enjoyed the show, many of them got to touch Pandora the snake and the Tarantula spiders, some Pups were more brave than Teacher Cecilia was!  Julian did such a great job and we always look forward to seeing him every year during our reptile week!

On Friday we had a visit from the dentist where we learnt all about our teeth and how to take good care of them.  To end off the day we are celebrating our July babies, Colton and Kaylee by having birthday ring. Happy Birthday Little Pups!

We hope you have a lovely weekend, there’s a cold front coming so keep warm!!

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK ...

Rr – Recycling

What an important theme this is to all of us at EcoKids Preschool!  This is what we are all about!  This is who we are!  We had a wonderful and informative week, learning all about recycling and reusing instead of just throwing things away.  We learnt an awesome new song:

“Reduce, reuse, recycle

Recycle, Recycle,

Reduce, reuse, recycle,

It’s easy to do!

Coz your trash and my trash

Make up way too much trash!

Reduce, reuse, recycle

It’s easy to do!”

And our Pups have been heard singing it all week!  We learnt that there are four main types of things that are recycled.  Paper, plastic, glass and tins.  And, a lot of the rubbish that we don’t recycle lands up in the oceans where it hurts sea creatures and pollutes the water!  We chatted about all the art that we do and the children saw that every week, we use recycled materials to make our beautiful art pieces!  We took a walk to the recycling station and saw the different containers and the BIG, BIG truck that comes to fetch the recycling when we have filled all the bins!  We played lots of sorting games, too, making sure the children knew which dustbin in our classroom was the right one for the paper or tin or plastic we gave them.  We done, Pups!

For art this week the Pups and teachers worked together. We got them to sprinkle grated wax crayon on wax paper, we then took old plastic bags that say RECYCLE and we cut them out so they could go in the middle of the wax paper with the wax crayons. Teacher Thandy then took an iron and ironed the wax paper and it created this stunning mix of colours which we have placed on formula tins creating an upcycled “dustbin“ for your bread plastics and bread tags to go in. Once you and your Pup/Pup’s fill the tin, please bring it to school so that we can use them for our nappy changing stations for our little ones – we are always REDUCING, REUSING, AND RECYCLING!

We explored a lot this week with all sorts of recycling materials and let the Pups have some free range and choices to make their own creations. This was so interesting to see all the different outcomes

We are also in process of doing reports so you can read all about your precious Pups when we break-up on the 24th of June.

Another amazing event that happened this week is that two more Pups joined our class, which is so wonderful!

Please have a wonderful and blessed weekend.

This week we learnt all about Land, Air and Sea transport! This is definitely a theme that appeals to the BOYS in our class a lot more than the girls and the boys had a great time running around pretending to be aeroplanes, motorbikes and helicopters. The sound effects were very impressive!

We were super busy with our art this week! We did some stamping. We make a truck. We also made a racing car from a loo roll … pink cars for girls and blue cars for boys. For our last transport activity, we made a yellow school bus out of a paper plate. We are also busy practicing for the concert.  So the Pups were hard at work this week!

Please can I remind you to LABEL your children’s clothes, especially jackets and shoes. It warms up dramatically during playtime and often our Pups take their own jackets off and leave them wherever they happen to fall. If things are not labeled it becomes almost impossible to find. Some of the older children often see things lying on the playground and then take it to where they think it belongs and it lands up going on a journey home with 6 different children in a totally different class before we finally track down a missing item. PLEASE try help us help you by LABELLING your stuff, even with a ball point pen on the tag. Also remember NO toys to come to school.

Please also pump the immune boosters and probiotics.

Who knows what a group of giraffe is called? Let us know on the class WhatsApp group!

We sure have had a ton of fun at school this week! There was so much to learn about! Wow! This Wild Animal theme is such a fun and interesting one.

We began our art piece by talking about the tallest animal – the giraffe – and all about it! What colour it is, how many legs it has, what’s on its head… we sponge painted a picture of a giraffe. We also made a paper plate lion … this was a lot of fun and we have decided to keep it for our Art Expo.

We did a lot of puzzle building this week and the Pups are really getting good at this activity.

The high light of the week must have been the tractor ride! Each class got to have a turn, where uncle Ryan put all the kiddies in a trailer and then they took a ride around the grounds just outside of the playground. Some Pups were too afraid to go but others thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They didn’t want to get out!

Thank you all for bringing in recycled materials to rebuild our art supplies. Please continue to set aside anything we can use for art. Please also bring us any toys you are throwing out. We can always find a home for them, if not with us, then with one of our charities.

Have a wonderful weekend. Please remember to do a weekly nail trim, there’s just not enough time in the day for us teachers to do nail trims. We look forward to another fun week of learning.

Ff – Farm

Another great week, with the theme being On the farm- Farm Animals! I hope your little ones have been singing your ears off with “Old Mac Donald!” and naming all the animals and sounds they make because we sure have been learning and practicing in class!
For art this week, our Pups made a horse out of a paper plate and we did some cork stamping to make pigs.
We also got our Pups to participate in a threading activity this week which is a fantastic activity for promoting fine motor development in young children. It requires concentration, thinking skills, encourages the use of the pincer grasp between the thumb and forefinger and naturally strengthens the small hand muscles that are vital for holding a pencil to write with, later on. We simply used pipe cleaners and old powder milk tins. We poked holes in the plastic lid for them to thread the pipe cleaner through … some grasped this technique so quickly while others needed more assistance.
On Thursday morning we took our Pups on a nature walk down to the ponies where they got to see Troy and Frankie. We asked the Pups what colour the ponies were and some shouted “green!”. We are getting to know all our colours but some Pups just seem to have a favorite and everything they see is either green or orange! How cute? We also got to collect grass which we then used for our art piece this week.
This is the third week of term two and for most of these Pups it seems as if they didn’t even have a month break, they are all back into routine and are happy going about their day. For the shyer Pups, some are shedding a few tears when being dropped off in the morning but this is absolutely fine and there is nothing to worry about, it takes two seconds for them to settle and then they’re off playing or doing an activity with their teachers. Us as adults don’t want to climb out our warm beds in the morning because it’s so dark and cold, so just imagine what it must be like for your little ones!?

We hope you all have a super weekend ahead, keep warm and safe. See you back on Monday!

V v – Vegetables

The Pups had another great week at school playing, learning and having fun!

This week we learnt about the farm – fruits and vegetables. The Pups got to taste all different kinds of fruit. We played: Guess what this fruit and veg is? And to our surprise our Pups did so well, they could name mostly everything; from the simple names such as apples, grapes, potato to the more difficult such as spinach and broccoli, well done Pups! This is an awesome game to play with your Pup at home, while you’re cooking up a storm! We also spoke about the farm and how our fruit and vegetables grow, with seeds, soil, water and love!

For art this week we did some fruit and vegetable stamping. The Pups then built their own basket by “weaving and sticking” the cardboard together. I then placed all the fruit and veg in front of the Pups and asked them to show me and tell me what fruit or vegetable it was. The children then had to pick it up, take the glue and stick it on their basket, some needed my assistance while others were super confident doing it on their own. The way they pronounced some of the fruit and veg names had us in stitches. They are just too ADORABLE and we know they are trying their best.

It’s getting much cooler here and we can definitely feel the icy air here at Ecokids and with Winter being here, along with it comes all the sickies. We are doing whatever we can to teach our Pups that they need to cough in their elbows, not lick their toys and to wash hands as often as possible so that we don’t spread germs! Our Pups are still so tiny so they are the first ones to catch anything flying around in the air which is out of our control. We just need to help them fight against it and let their bodies immune system fight against the ghoghos. Thank you all for keeping your babies at home and sticking to our sick policy, we appreciate it and it helps us fight the spreading of germs. We hope all our Pups who were at home this week are recovering nicely and that they are ready to be back at school next week, we’ve missed them so much!

We are still finding that a lot of clothing hasn’t been labeled, please, PLEASE label everything as we can’t always keep track of who wore what and who’s is who’s! Items that aren’t labeled will be put into the lost property box.

We hope you and our Pups have a lovely weekend, keep warm and we will see you back at school on Monday.

Mm – Mommy

This has been the most amazing week for so many reasons! We missed our Pups so much over the holiday and it’s just so amazing to have them back!  We are so happy and proud to see them following and remembering our routine after our holiday.

Then, it was Mommy week! The kids LOVED it! All the children had a great time playing mommy or daddy and it was so lovely to see their nurturing natures come out. Children are so naturally gentle and kind! And they know what to do when they see a baby and a pram. It was adorable. Don’t be scared to buy your boy child a doll if he wants one – they are practicing to be great, hands – on dads! We chatted about mommies and what they do for their children, the names of animal mommies and their babies (for example, a dog and a puppy!) and we chatted about where a baby grows, what a baby needs and how to look after a baby.

We made a special present for mom this week. We were out in the sunshine planting a very special plant for mom and made a very special card for mom that we attached to the plant. This was a great sensory activity even though some little bodies weren’t so eager to get their hands dirty.  We also made an amazing lip balm for you moms, out of beeswax, coconut oil and peppermint oil. The children were fascinated with the texture of the beeswax sheets and the distinct smell it has.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable week and it is great to be back. Please, a few reminders in general: Keep nails short, to avoid scratching accidents. Start your child on a multivitamin like Crèche Guard (if you haven’t already) to try beat the winter bugs going around. Also, please refer to the Sick Policy and keep children who are ill at home so we can minimize the spread of colds and flu. Label, label, label EVERYTHING! … In winter there are many more items of clothing coming to school and during the day as it warms up, we tend to remove layers and then things get very easily mixed up and sent home with the wrong child. The playground looks like a cupboard at the end of playtime as the children strip off layers and just drop them as they warm up. Lazarus then brings us what he thinks is ours based on size but it would really help if everything had a label. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend! Keep warm and get back to us safely on Monday!

Well this has been a short but productive week at school and lots of excitement with Easter just around the corner.

For our Easter themed art piece, we made an Easter bunny out of a loo roll which the Pups painted. The girls used pink and the boys used blue to paint their bunnies. The teachers helped them with the ears and face. We also made an Easter card for our moms and dads – these turned out to be super cute!

For our Autumn art piece, the Pups got to do some marble rolling. We used Autumn colours, such as red and orange. This was so funny to watch them do as their first instinct is to shake their heads from side to side before shaking the box with marbles. Once they got going it was a shake-shake party! They loved it! We then went on a quick nature walk to pick up some leaves and sticks that have fallen down from the trees to glue on their marble painting.

The Pups also thoroughly enjoyed a sensory activity this week, that kept them so busy! This activity got them to use and build on their fine motor skills. This is great for their development and aids in many other developmental domains. They had to try and open a peg to catch a ‘worms’ close it and then carry it to a bowl, and then open the peg again so that the worm drops inside the bowl for a little chick to eat. This is quite advanced and we will keep practicing to get better and better. This is really cool to do at home with your little ones too, or get them to help you hang up washing by passing you the pegs and ask them to open and close them so they can get the motion and concept.

Thank you to everyone who donated Easter eggs. Your kindness is really appreciated.

We can’t believe that the first term has come to an end already! What an incredible term it has been, to meeting all of our Pups and getting to know their little character’s and watching them grow day by day. Please enjoy a wonderful peaceful and happy Easter and safe holidays to everyone.  May you be blessed and safe with your families.

The Pups had a lovely week watching the teachers entertain them with all sorts of different experiments.

We joined the Busy Bug class for an exciting experiment all about floating and sinking objects in a huge glass vase. The kids chose an object and the other learners had to guess if the object would float or sink. They were amazed that certain objects that looked heavy to them didn’t sink as they thought it would. Some of the looks on their little faces were amazing.

It’s not the easiest thing to do experiments with such small children but we tried to keep it very basic. We watched squishes grow. We used a balloon and rubbed it on their hair to show them about static electricity. Overall it was very cool to see the Pups try to understand what we were doing. Next week is going to be a short week so we also started working on our Easter art.

Please note there are still a number of clothing, shoes, blankets, bottles etc that are not labelled so please make an extra big effort to label ALL your child’s belongings.

Cc – Conveyor Belt

We spent the week building, building and building out of all sorts of bricks and blocks. We have quite a variety in the class and art studio. They loved building houses and towers with teacher Thandy and Sizo. We used all different types of blocks from small wooden ones to large plastic Lego blocks. This is a tricky theme, but the Pups really learned so much by observing and playing.

For our art piece this week we all painted a box. This is quite a difficult process for the Pups and a lot of work for them to paint all the sides of the box. The Pups were bending in all sorts of different ways to reach all the sides. Some of them realized they could turn the box around and around to reach the different sides. We used brushes to paint our boxes and at times painted each other! We wrote the address on each child’s building and used each child’s name as the street name. For an example my buildings address was 113 Cecilia Street Rynfield Benoni. We all had so much fun!!

The teachers are very happy with their little Pups and enjoy all our days spent with them.

Have a wonderful weekend. NB!  Wednesday 13th April is break up day.

Brrrrrr!

We can definitely feel the weather is changing! But even though there is a chill in the air, it is really beautiful to see all the Autumn leaves!

With that being said, please make sure your Pups are taking their vitamins and necessary medication so we can keep those horrible germs as far away as possible.
