What a lovely theme, the children are always so fascinated by all of the different ways that we can heighten our senses. This week was jam packed with activities and getting into the swing of things for the new year.
Writing and Phonics: Phonics this week focused on our next three letters (D,E,F) which the children traced and then wrote them independently. We are pleased to see that they are getting the hang of using the ‘cat method’ and although this is a difficult one – they are using the method nicely. This can be practiced easily at home by using scrap paper.
We also added a new sight word, ‘at’. Please continue practicing letter sounds and the sight word ‘look’.
Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week focused on number formation and properties of a square. The Squad had to distinguish between four different squares and place them from biggest to smallest. They dipped them in paint and ordered them. Afterwards we discussed how many sides a square has, it’s corners and how many straws it would take to build a 3D square – cube.
Life Skills: This week we looked at introducing the principle: Inquirers. These types of students are learners who seek information and ask many questions.
Art: We had so much fun this week, getting our senses tingling. We made a booklet which was completed throughout the week using our five senses. The Squad cut out magazine pictures which tackled the ‘taste’ sense, they also drew beautiful pictures which focused on their ‘sight’ sense. We went to the art studio and the Squad could pick their favourite textures to stick on their ‘touch’ sense. For ‘smell’ the children stuck in different smelling spices and the last sense ‘hearing’ the Squad threaded different beads and formed their own jingling earring.
Cooking & Music: This week’s cooking was so much fun, we had a blindfolded tasting session where the children had to guess by smelling, touching, and feeling the different foods. They giggled so much at their friends and enjoyed this activity so much. We used the following: lemon, garlic, onion, cocoa powder, sugar, vinegar, honey and more. For our music lesson, the children learned about rhythm and how to keep a beat by clapping to the different patterns and splitting words up into syllables.
It has been a great week.
See you all next week.
