We started off this theme with creating our own tool belts. During Ring Time we had a discussion about the different kinds of tools and their uses, then the kiddies coloured in a hammer, a saw and a wrench. Next, they put their fine motor skills to work, by tearing up silver gift paper, to add to their tools to give them a ‘metal look’. Before adding everything together, they painted their belts in their chosen colour!

We also had tons of fun with a numeracy construction activity. Our Hoppers wore safety hard hats while they hammered 10 golf pegs into egg cartons. They had to count each peg while hammering to make sure that they had 10. This activity gave our kiddies an opportunity to count objects one by one to form the connection between the value of a number and objects.

It has been a great week filled with tons of practical activities and games!

Our theme next week is: Science and Experiments

Have a safe and lovely weekend!

In The Making ...

This theme allows for so much creativity and imagination! It was wonderful to see all the creations from our little engineers and architects in the making. The Hoppers just loved indulging in our construction stations that had been set up throughout the week! They constructed some pretty impressive structures and buildings!

This week our Crew loved building and getting creative with all kinds of different materials. They made some epic looking creations and even built their own little shops, rocket ships and buildings. Giving them the opportunity to build with loose parts and explore the different materials really lets them use their imagination, creativity and perceptual skills.

Amongst the fun and learning about the ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and the importance of not joking about serious things, we did many challenging worksheets this week. The worksheets challenged their shape drawing, pencil control and perceptual skills.

We had lots of fun practicing for the FunFit Sports Day and loved making Rice Krispy treats in Cooking! Please don’t forget our Sports Day is next week Saturday – the 9th! We look forward to seeing you all there. The Crew are team yellow so need a yellow t-shirt please 🙂

We can’t believe there are only two more weeks of Term 1 left! Have a great weekend everyone!

Heart Matters

In Heart Matters this week the Crew had so much fun playing with different musical instruments! Teacher Hela taught them about how different sounds can evoke different kinds of emotions.

We spent the week building, building and building out of all sorts of bricks and blocks. We have quite a variety in the class and art studio. They loved building houses and towers with teacher Thandy and Sizo. We used all different types of blocks from small wooden ones to large plastic Lego blocks. This is a tricky theme, but the Pups really learned so much by observing and playing.

For our art piece this week we all painted a box. This is quite a difficult process for the Pups and a lot of work for them to paint all the sides of the box. The Pups were bending in all sorts of different ways to reach all the sides. Some of them realized they could turn the box around and around to reach the different sides. We used brushes to paint our boxes and at times painted each other! We wrote the address on each child’s building and used each child’s name as the street name. For an example my buildings address was 113 Cecilia Street Rynfield Benoni. We all had so much fun!!

The teachers are very happy with their little Pups and enjoy all our days spent with them.

Have a wonderful weekend. NB!  Wednesday 13th April is break up day.

Brrrrrr!

We can definitely feel the weather is changing! But even though there is a chill in the air, it is really beautiful to see all the Autumn leaves!

With that being said, please make sure your Pups are taking their vitamins and necessary medication so we can keep those horrible germs as far away as possible. Please also label every piece of clothing as it is very easy to lose jerseys and jackets when the layers come off and when they haven’t been labeled.

What a super fun week! The Busy Bugs had a blast building, breaking apart, and then rebuilding huge structures using a wide variety of materials like wooden blocks, Lego blocks of all sizes, cardboard boxes and so much more!

We focused a lot on loose parts, imaginative construction this week and these Bugs just loved getting to use their own creativity, imagination and amazing fine and gross motor skills to put together the most magnificent structures!

Just another reminder of our Sports day next week Saturday the 9th. Please note that Busy Bugs to Smart Squad parents are not allowed inside the sports stations and are asked to remain in the watching area, cheering your Bugs on! Please remember hats and sunblock!!! As well as a water bottle.

Another reminder to please book your Holiday Club days using the link sent on the info group.

Have a lovely, restful weekend and we will see you next week!

The Highlight of this Week ...

… was when we got to put the awesome CAT constructions toys to use in the Pups classroom’s back garden. We had diggers, cranes, excavators, dump trucks, bulldozers and spades. The Bugs had so much fun taking turns to try out all of the equipment.

What a fun-filled week! The Squad loved this theme because we built tall buildings and then they pushed them over to make a crashing noise! The boys were in their element!

Writing and Phonics: The Squad completed the lower-case letters this week. Firstly, we went over the sounds of the alphabet and then the children traced them. They did this so well! The next worksheet that we completed was based on the five vowels: a,e,i,o,u. We introduced this last week and reiterated them this week – the Squad really have been working hard and even though this is a difficult concept to grasp, the Squad have really impressed us! The children completed words by adding a vowel in the middle, choosing the correct one to make the word sound correct. For example, they added ‘i’ in the word pig and so forth. Parents can practice this at home by sounding the words out and letting your child tell you which one is the vowel. You can really get creative with this.

Maths: We covered the concept of measurement. So, the Squad had the chance to play with rulers and go around the classroom measuring the items. We then introduced a worksheet that uses cubes of measurement. The children had to count how many cubes covered the item. They understood this quite well and we are so proud of them! We also covered counting to 50, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. This is very tricky, but we know with practice, the Squad will be able to do it!

Life Skills: Don’t joke about serious things! We explained to the children that it is so important to know when something is serious and when something is funny. We can joke about little things but then we must know when to stop.

Art: This week we completed a lovely ‘invitation to create.’ The children were given a blank piece of paper and different shapes, they had to maneuver these shapes to create the buildings that they wanted. We had lovely buildings, big and small. The Squad are so creative!

Sight Words: look, at, me, in, here, on, she, he, the, it, is, I, play & we

It has been a lovely week, see you all on Monday. Enjoy the weekend!

A Note from Teacher Amber

It has been a privilege getting to know these special children and they have wormed their way into my heart. I am so sad I won’t be here to watch them graduate. I am going to miss you all so much, but I know the SS are left in the best hands. Good luck for the rest of the year.

Lots of love, Teacher Amber.
