The Squad had a blast with the theme cooking and food! They learned about various cooking methods and the importance of proper food handling, especially for foods like pork and chicken, to avoid foodborne illnesses. They made their own pizzas, where they added their own tomato paste, ham, and cheese, and then took this delicious treat home to eat. Well done, Squad!

IB Principle: Open-Minded – We explained to the Squad that being open-minded means being willing to listen to and consider other people’s ideas and thoughts, even if they’re different from yours.

Imagine you have a friend who loves playing with blocks, but you love playing with dolls. Being open-minded means, you can say, “That’s cool! You like blocks, and I like dolls. Let’s play together and find a way to make it fun for both of us!”

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on decoding words using sound buttons in their Time2Read books. Great work Squad! We also recapped letter sounds, CVC words, clapping in syllables as well as practiced letter formation.

Mathematics: This week for maths the squad tackled a worksheet where they had to fill in the number that comes before or after the given number. They grasped this concept well! We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards, as well as in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Creative Art: For art this week the kiddies started creating the most beautiful Christmas Art, they cant wait to take it home to show their family!

Music: We are currently practicing graduation songs, and the squad is singing with all their heart. It is a bittersweet time of the year filled with excitement!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

This week in the Curious Crew class we explored one of everyone’s favourite topics, cooking and food. It was such a fun and engaging theme for both teachers and children.

We began by discussing the different utensils and gadgets we use in the kitchen. It was so entertaining hearing the children’s answers during ring time. Some of their ideas were wonderfully imaginative and had us all smiling.

We continued our focus on learning the alphabet, not only recognising the letters but also identifying the sounds they make. The Crew absolutely love singing their Jolly Phonics songs, and it is incredible to see their progress. This skill forms such an important foundation for Grade R, so if possible, please keep practising these sounds at home.

This is one of my favourite themes, and it is clear the children feel the same. To start the week, we made caramel and Oreo apple rings. The Crew each cut their own apple ring, spread caramel on top, and sprinkled Oreo bits over it. Needless to say, this delicious treat was a huge hit.

The class also began creating their Christmas art projects, and I cannot wait for you to see the beautiful festive masterpieces they have been working on. Their creativity and attention to detail truly shine through.

One of our other activities this week was a drawing task where the children illustrated their favourite animals, including what they eat, where they live, and even what toys they might play with. The resulting artwork was filled with colour and imagination.

To end off the week, we made mini pizza breads. The Crew loved every step of the process, from spreading the tomato paste and adding garlic and viennas to sprinkling the cheese on top. The best part was enjoying their delicious creations once they came out of the oven.

At FunFit Sport, Coach Trevor has been completing assessments, and it has been incredible to see how much all our little ones have improved. Their coordination, confidence, and teamwork have grown so much since the start of the year, and we are very proud of them.

This week Yoga took place on Tuesday instead of Friday, and the Crew were so excited to start their morning with stretching and calm music. Our session included warm-up stretches, yoga songs, quiet relaxation time, and breathing exercises.

Our yoga song for the week was “Clap It Right,” which uses side stretches to strengthen the oblique muscles. We ended the session by listening to the soft sound of bubbles popping, the perfect way to unwind and finish a peaceful morning.

Mind Ninjas with Teacher Avi – This week in Mind Ninjas we explored strong emotions such as fear, anxiety, anger, and irritation, and learned how to find calm in the middle of those big feelings.

We used the image of a tree in a storm. When the wind blows, the branches move and sway, but the trunk stays firm and steady. The children practised being trees in the storm, learning that while their minds, like the branches, can move with different thoughts and emotions, their bellies, like the trunk, can help them stay grounded and calm.

We then lay down for deep breathing, focusing on the rise and fall of our bellies, just like gentle waves in the sea. The children imagined a little boat rocking on the water and slowly returning to a safe harbour, a soothing way to visualise coming back to calm.

You can support this at home by reminding your child to find their tree trunk or breathe their boat back to the harbour whenever emotions feel big. It is a simple and powerful way to help them reconnect to their calm centre.

Next week is our Curious Crew Market Day and Shopping Activity. Please remember that each child must have someone to assist them on the day. An example of the market day slips will be sent out beforehand so that everyone understands how they work. Parents do not need to worry about handling any money as everything will be managed smoothly in class.

Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend.

Next week’s theme: Shops and Shopping

What a fun filled week the Hoppers had! From cooking to a wonderful morning showing off our Yoga skills to our parents. It was such a special day to display how teacher Yoga works with us on a weekly basis.  Thank you to each and every parent who could join us today. It was truly a wonderful morning.

This week was all about cooking and boy did we have fun! Cooking teaches toddlers valuable life skills like math, science, and fine motor skills through activities like measuring and mixing. It also fosters creativity, builds confidence and patience, and encourages healthy eating habits by exposing them to new foods in a positive, hands-on way.

Academic and motor skills

  • Math: Teaches concepts like counting, measuring, and sequencing.
  • Science: Introduces cause and effect, such as how heat changes food, and teaches about ingredients and nutrition.
  • Literacy: Improves language skills through new vocabulary and reading recipes.
  • Fine motor skills: Enhances hand-eye coordination through tasks like stirring, rolling, and spreading.

Social and emotional development

  • Patience: Requires waiting for things to be ready, which builds patience and focus.
  • Following directions: Helps them learn to follow instructions and complete a task from start to finish.
  • Family bonding: Creates positive parent-child interactions and quality family time.
  • Healthy eating: Encourages picky eaters to try new foods because they have a hand in making them.
  • Sensory exploration: Engages all five senses as they see, touch, smell, and taste different ingredients.
  • Food appreciation: Helps them appreciate where food comes from and the effort that goes into preparing it.

For our first activity we melted chocolate and then we put a marshmellow on a stick and dipped it in chocolate and sprinkled some hundred and thousands on them. The Hoppers couldn’t wait to take them home so they ate them at school. Our second activity was also so much fun we made a biscuit racing car. We used a finger biscuit for the body of the car. We then iced the biscuit and stuck on the wheels which used smarties. We used a jelly baby to place on the top for the driver of the car.

We also learnt the difference between a 2D, and 3D shape. It was so interesting watching them explore the rectangular prism and counting the sides. Our “big” word for this week was: dimensional. Most of our Hoppers was able to say this with ease. You all are getting so big now.

For FunFit Sports, Coach Trevor made the kids do races and even ran all the way around the playground. The Happy Hoppers had so much fun doing this activity and showing off how fast they are!

I hope all the parents enjoy their time with their little ones this weekend.

This week our theme was cooking, and the Bugs had an absolute blast! We spoke about the importance of washing our hands before preparing food and discussed how to stay safe in the kitchen. The Bugs were very excited to share that they often help Mommy and Daddy when cooking at home, and it was wonderful to see how much they already knew about kitchen safety and cleanliness.

For art, we made adorable little cookie jars using a peg and a small piece of cotton wool. The Bugs used their pegs to dip the cotton wool into paint and stamp cute little cookie shapes—it was such a fun and creative process! We also started our Christmas art this week by decorating Christmas balls with recycled materials. The Bugs loved exploring different textures and colours while creating their festive masterpieces.

During FunFit Sports, we completed our assessments, and afterward, the Bugs enjoyed some well-deserved free play with Coach Trevor on the big wooden jungle gym. They absolutely love climbing, balancing, and exploring outdoors with their friends—it’s always a highlight of their week!

On Tuesday, we took our theme a step further with a hands-on cooking activity. The Bugs made their very own pizzas using dough, tomato sauce, cheese, and ham. Each child worked independently, carefully following the steps to create their own delicious pizza. It was such a proud moment to see how confidently and responsibly they worked—our little chefs truly impressed us!

Throughout the week, we also focused on building skills such as puzzle solving, counting, and shape recognition. The Bugs worked so well on these activities, showing wonderful concentration and problem-solving abilities. It has been such a joy to see how much they’ve grown in their independence, confidence, and creativity.

Cooking and Food Week with the Playful Pups

This week in the Playful Pups class was all about Cooking and Food, a topic that had everyone’s tummies rumbling from Monday morning!

We started off by chatting about all the delicious foods our Pups love most, and it came as no surprise that pizza, cookies, and sweets were the clear winners. (We did have a few enthusiastic mentions of broccoli … but we suspect those might have been for teacher approval!)

Throughout the week, we explored different foods — where they come from, what makes them healthy, and how they help us grow strong and energetic. The highlight came when we ventured into our school kitchen for a hands-on experience. Armed with safety knives and big smiles, our little chefs chopped up fresh fruit and helped make a healthy smoothie,  which was enjoyed right down to the last drop!

Of course, no week would be complete without a bit of creative fun. For art, our Pups painted and decorated their very own donuts — colourful, sparkly, and wonderfully imaginative. Thankfully, no real sugar rush was involved!

This week also saw Coach Trevor put our Pups through their FunFit assessment, a fun-filled session of movement, balance, and giggles. The results of these will appear in their end-of-year reports, but we can safely say our Pups gave it their all!

To top it all off, we were treated to two yoga sessions with the ever-patient Teacher Nicole. Thursday’s early morning Mommy and Daddy yoga was a special highlight — it was such a joy to see parents and Pups stretching, balancing, and laughing together. What a wonderful way to start the day!

It’s been a week full of fun, food, and a few fruity smoothies — the perfect recipe for happy learning in the Playful Pups class!

IB Principle: Risk Takers – We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker is like being a brave adventurer! It means trying new things, even if they might not work out. When you take risks, you learn and grow, and sometimes you discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you. Imagine if you never tried riding a bike or swimming because you were afraid of falling or getting wet? You would miss out on so much fun! Taking risks helps you build confidence, make new friends, and find new passions. It’s okay to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! So, don’t be afraid to take a chance, try something new, and see where it takes you. You might just discover something amazing!

Writing and Phonics: This week, the Squad focused on the ‘og’ and ‘op’ word families. They demonstrated their understanding by matching the words to corresponding pictures, making use of their ‘sounds buttons’ and then writing sentences in their workbooks applying the “cat” method. It’s impressive to see how their handwriting skills have improved, with noticeable advancements in letter formation and finger spacing. They’re also showing a great understanding of word structure such as placing them in the correct part of the “cats”. Keep up the excellent work, squad!

Mathematics: This week we practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10, as well as counting backwards from 30-0. Please continue to reinforce this skill at home. The Squad also completed a worksheet where they had to fill in the missing numbers that come before and after the given number up to 10.

Creative Art: The Squad put their creative minds to work this week and created their own “fruit” using bottle lids and bottle caps, they were super chuffed with their creations and couldn’t wait to take them home to show you!

This week in the Curious Crew class we have concentrated on what utensils and gadgets we use in the kitchen. It was quite interesting hearing some of the answers we had in ring time!

Again, this week we have been hard at work learning the alphabet. Not only being able to recognise the letter but also the sound the letters make, the Crew just love singing their Jolly Phonics! Letter Recognition is one of the most important requirements for Grade R. Please, if you could practice this with your little ones at home. In saying that I’m so proud to say that almost half of the class know all the letters of the alphabet. Wow, yay #proudteacher.

I love this theme and so do the children! Let’s get started…

Ice cream always goes down well so that was our cooking activity for the week. Using condensed milk, heavy whipping cream, vanilla essence, and then the Crew got to choose their flavour: vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. They could not wait to dive in!

The Crew also got creative making their own chef apron felt art. Each Crew got an outline of an apron and they used glue to stick pieces of felt to make their personalized apron.

Last but not least we ended off the week drawing our favourite food. The Crew were so happy, chatting about what they love eating most! It seems that chocolate, hamburger and pizza are our class favourites.

Next week is our Curious Crew market day and shopping activity, please let me know if you have any questions. Crew must have someone to help them on Market Day and an example of the market day slips will go out beforehand so that everyone knows how the slips will work. The parents do not need to worry about handling any money at all. The Crew will also be doing their shopping activity on Wednesday.

It was such a special day to display how Teacher Yoga works with us on a weekly basis.  Thank you to each and every parent who could join us today. It was truly a wonderful morning.

This week was all about cooking and boy did we have fun! For our first activity we focused on our fine motor skills by threading fresh fruit onto skewers. Our fruit kebabs were enjoyed by all the Happy Hoppers. Next, we had our taste buds dancing by creating our very own Calzones. We used wraps as the base, and the kids could choose their own toppings to put on. There was only one word for them: Yum!

We also learnt the difference between a 2D, and 3D shape. It was so interesting watching them explore the rectangular prism and counting the sides. Our “big” word for this week was: dimensional. Most of our Hoppers was able to say this with ease. You all are getting so big now.

This is one of the teachers’ best weeks (because it gives us all an excuse to break the diet- hehe!). We have had such a blast this week with all the fun cooking, eating and experimenting that we have done! It is so much fun and so rewarding to see the children enjoy themselves so much!

We spent the week discussing all things food, cooking and the kitchen! We chatted about cooking utensils and what we use them for, as well as all the interesting things we can find in a kitchen! The children loved sharing their stories of how they have helped you in the kitchen to prepare meals and we loved hearing what their favourite and least favourite foods are! There were quite a few interesting answers! We loved learning about what gets hot in the kitchen and what to be careful around. We agreed that the stove, oven, toaster and kettle should be treated with caution, knives and scissors can also be dangerous and they should always ask for help.

Our song of the week was “The Soup Song” which also serves as a memory game and the children have to take turns to add ingredients to the pot to make a soup! Some of the soups we made sounded delicious, but the ones that ended up with potatoes, candyfloss, chocolate and chicken… we think we’d rather give those a skip! Haha!

Everyone’s favourite part of the week was of course the days when we got to make our own delicious snacks all by ourselves! On Tuesday, we made our own snack, which was delicious chicken vienna and cheese pizza bread. On Wednesday, we made delicious fruit smoothies for snack. And on Thursday, we helped Chef Thembi make the delicious muffins that were enjoyed at our Mommy/Daddy and Me yoga day!

Every day Chef Thembi or Chef Sonia came to our classroom to get a headcount for the day’s meals and we explained to the children how special these ladies are to us.  We made sure that the Bugs said please and thank you for all of their meals this week.

*A few quick notes*

  • Reminder to send in/purchase your report USB from Amy.
  • Please trim nails on a regular basis. Accidents happens so fast, and shorter nails help minimize the effects.
  • Please remember to send us a hat, even if we have to send it home again every day. It is so hot, and the rule is: no hat – no play! We would hate for the children to miss out on playtime and have to sit in the shade on the deck because they don’t have a hat.
  • Please, please, please… EVERYTHING sent to school must be labelled! Jackets, tops, pants, shoes, socks, bottles and even underwear. A lot of our children throughout the whole school have the same, or very similar items of clothes. Labelling everything just makes it easier for all of us teachers to know what belongs to who.

Have a stunning weekend everyone!

This week, our theme was all about cooking, and the Pups absolutely loved it! We chatted about their favourite foods, and in an adorable twist, every single one of them picked pizza as their number one!  We also had some thoughtful conversations about keeping our hands nice and clean before cooking and being super careful around sharp or hot things in the kitchen.

When it came time to cook, they really surprised me with their independence! Each Pup spread their own tomato paste, sprinkled cheese with enthusiasm, and even carefully cut up their little Viennas. They were so focused and determined—it was heartwarming to watch.

For our fine motor fun, the Pups practiced with tiny beads, carefully adding them onto little sticks and using a tiny scoop to collect them into bowls. The concentration on their faces was just precious! Their hard work and focus truly amazed me!

We also enjoyed some music this week where the Pups had to copy the movement I did. We also focused on our spatial concepts while doing music. They loved it!

We’ve also been busy full speed with reports coming soon, and the Pups are doing great with their assessments!

I’m so proud of all of you!

With all our Pups having such great appetites, this theme is such a hit and so full of fun and learning! We spent a lot of time sampling, stirring, sprinkling, chopping, mixing, blending and licking!

We are lucky to have such a well-equipped kitchen here at our school, and the kitchen staff love visits from our children and are always so obliging. We went for a visit to the kitchen earlier on in the week to see the ovens, the stove, mixers and blenders, all the pots and pans and the funny kitchen utensils! It was adorable listening to the children say things like “spatula” and “whisk”! Such lovely words to get little tongues around!

While we were in the kitchen, we told the children that Teacher Thembi and Teacher Sonia make their delicious snacks and food each day! It was so cute to see their sweet little smiles when they realized that their food does not come from the shop. We said thank you very much! It is important to be thankful for the people who make your food, Pups!

We all had so much fun this week learning all about cooking, but the highlight was making the pizza. This was tremendous fun to see the Pups rolling out their dough and building their little pizza’s a lot of the topping went straight into their little mouths. This was so cute to see after I told them don’t eat the cheese or the any of our pizza toppings.

In the lead up to Christmas we are asking for you to bring in your decorated Christmas boxes that we will use to send home all your Pup’s Christmas stuff! Please try getting these in early to avoid a scramble…

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there so please do not be surprised if your Pup comes home singing Christmas carols! We hope you have a lovely weekend.

They were delicious, and even the children who aren’t really keen on egg most of the time had a great time munching all of it! Well done Bugs! Last but not least, on Friday, we made delicious fruit smoothies for snack. You can find all 3 of these delicious recipes in the adorable Cook Books your Bugs made.

Every day Chef Thembi or Chef Sonia came to our classroom to get a headcount for the day’s meals and we explained to the children how special these ladies are to us.  We made sure that the Bugs said please and thank you for all of their meals this week.

Reminder to send in/purchase your report USB from Amy, as well as the Christmas Box.

Please trim nails on a regular basis. Accidents happens so fast, and shorter nails help minimise the effects.

Please remember to send us a hat, even if we have to send it home again every day. It is so hot and the rule is: no hat – no play! We would hate for the children to miss out on playtime and have to sit in the shade on the deck because they don’t have a hat.

Please, please, please… EVERYTHING sent to school must be labelled! Jackets, tops, pants, shoes, socks, bottles and even underwear. A lot of our children throughout the whole school have the same, or very similar items of clothes. Labelling everything just makes it easier for all of us teachers to know what belongs to who.

Have a stunning weekend everyone!
