,Welcome back to the second half of Term 2! We hope everyone had a lovely mid-term break and enjoyed reading your child’s mid-year assessment.

This week was all about reptiles! You can ask your child what makes a reptile a reptile and see what they say!

We started off the week with some pencil control, perceptual skills, pattern copying and colour by letter recognition, all including the theme of reptiles.

Our shape of the week is a hexagon so we decided to make a cute tortoise out of a hexagon shape. We encouraged the children to create a pattern on their tortoise shell and some of the patterns turned out beautifully! The Crew had to cut out and paste their tortoise together and, wow, we are so impressed with how their cutting skills have improved! We are super happy with their progress in this area.

On Wednesday we had such an awesome day as Julian from the Exotic Animal Sanctuary came to show the children all his weird and wonderful reptiles and a few other things, like his bird eating spider. We were surprised to see that so many children weren’t afraid to touch or hold some of the creatures. This is very cool that they are so keen to experience new things and interact with nature. We have some brave Crew in the class!

Next weekend is our concert! Eek! One week to go! We have been practicing very hard. Next week will be all about putting the finishing touches on their performances and costumes. We think that the Crew have had so much fun and they can’t wait to see and wear their costumes!

Please continue to work hard on our Letter Challenge, the more practice the children get, the better prepared they will be for Smart Squad/Grade R.

Have a great weekend everyone!

THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK ...

… was definitely when we got a visit from the ‘Snake Man!’

We had some very brave kiddies … and some hesitant little ones too!

It was such a chilly week but we managed to get so much done! On Monday we completed two worksheets, the first was a tracing worksheet which helped the children learn how to draw a diamond. The second worksheet was a connect the dots worksheet which focused on the correct number sequence. They had to count out aloud as they joined the dots and this helped with number recognition which we are practicing! The end result was an aeroplane – which they loved seeing come together. We decided it would also be fun to show the children the rhombus shape which is very similar to the diamond. Have some fun over the weekend and ask your child to draw a diamond independently – you will be surprised!

During free play, we put on a YouTube Blippi video which focused on all the different types of transport. The Crew really love Blippi and get so excited to see him. While some were watching Blippi others were creating roads and bridges with loose parts and blocks. The Crew love this and it is so important for them to use their creativity and problem-solving skills. Teacher Emma took groups of the Crew outside to work on some letter recognition. We really feel like their letter recognition is going to improve dramatically over the next couple of months and we are excited to re-assess the Crew at a later stage.

Wednesday was very eventful and started off with the Crew completing their art pieces. Whilst some were in Heart Matters, the others were in class with us. We tried another activity of visual representation and following instructions which went incredibly well. We were so pleased with Crews’ progress and listening abilities compared to the first time we tried this activity. The boys and girls created their very own maps whilst Teacher Clarissa explained a story about transport, roads, and maps and this time we added some colour. Great work! The Crew are definitely going to impress their teachers when they get to Smart Squad!

During story time, we read an interesting book about Children’s rights which the Crew really enjoyed. We have also started to learn our concert songs! The Crew are very excited about the upcoming concert and we can’t wait for you to see how awesome it is going to be! You may have heard your child singing something that goes like “let’s go swimming!” – this is their favourite song and the kiddies get so excited and invested, it is too cute!

Please keep up with your Letter Challenge books! We thank you for your hard work so far. Please remember to bring it back every Thursday with the library books 😊

Have a wonderful weekend. Next week is all about Recycling!

This week has been wonderful and full of excitement! All the kiddies have settled in so nicely and are beginning to feel comfortable in their new little “home’’. This week’s theme was “My Body’’. We started the week off by discussing how amazing our bodies are. We made x-rays out of our hands, which the Crew just loved!

After learning about our bones, we began to analyse some of our incredible inner body parts (our organs). Specifically, the blood that passes through them. Teacher Clarissa helped the kiddies make up their own blood jar, explaining all of the components that the blood consists of. The children had so much fun! (We created blood using red squishy balls, white polystyrene balls, red platelet squares and yellow water).

We drew a picture of our body image, there were some very cute and interesting pictures drawn, hehe!

With our colour of the week being RED, we thought it would be super interesting for the Crew to see how we can mix other colours with red. They were amazed and saw that when we mix red with white we get pink, when we mix it with blue we get purple and when we mix it with yellow we got orange.

We also started our cooking, FunFit Sports and Yoga intramurals this week. The children were so thrilled! We also had some extra mural demos that the children really enjoyed too!

Please note that not all worksheets will go home as we have a portfolio that we send out with reports in the second term. That way, you can see how much they have progressed throughout the year.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Next week’s theme: My Senses

A Happy Body is a Happy Me!

The most important rule in our class is to ‘Keep your hands to yourself’. Parents – if you could please chat to your children at home about this rule and how they can respect their friends’ personal space during class time and playtime.

What an absolutely amazing second last week of school. As things are nearing the end it is a blessing to see how much the Crew have grown since the beginning of the year. There have been so many special memories made this week.

On Monday the Crew made their very own ice lollies, created with yoghurt and fruit bits. They had so much fun making the mixture and pouring it into moulds. We also spent the day working through our shapes (focusing on 3D specifically as next year they will cover this more in detail). On Tuesday we decided to make Principal Anita a lovely birthday card for her birthday. It was so special to see how much they love her and all the wonderful memories they have of her. Later on in the day we enjoyed our frozen ice lollies in the garden – they were delicious!

Cooking week is always fun for the children to be involved in making something and feeling like ‘big kids’! On Thursday we created our very own snack! Nutella and fruit on bread! They were so excited and made wonderful masterpieces! We definitely have some Picassos in the class! We tackled numbers, their formation is very important going to Grade R. The Crew have progressed well with recognising their numerals and we are so proud of them! The weather on Thursday was perfect for movies and popcorn! Yay!

For homework this week, if you could practice letter sounds – ask your child to sing the alphabet song and then go through the letters asking them to sound out the letters. They will surprise you!

Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

We went on an outing!

Wednesday was our Curious Crew outing day. It was truly a beautiful day, the weather was great and the children had a blast! They were all so well-behaved and listened so well. There were many swings and even a big (fabric sac) swing! The Crew had such a jol! We are so blessed with the children that we had this year! We are going to miss them so much!

Hh – Holiday

We had so much fun learning about the different places we can travel to last week. The Crew have such lovely memories and can tell their teachers about their holidays. Thank you for being so enthusiastic guys!

We completed three worksheets this week, two were letter based and the third was number orientated. The Crew had to follow simple and complex instructions (this is an assessment criteria), they all did really well! This week we read three Letter Land books for story time. Namely; the letter of the week ‘h’, the letter ‘i’ and the letter ‘g’. We are introducing the concept of before and after so for example, ‘which letter comes before ‘h’ in the alphabet.’ This also falls under assessment criteria. The Crew have participated so well this week with new terms and concepts. Congratulations boys and girls!

The worksheets included different types of activities, they had to colour, trace, find, circle and match letters. They have all come such a long way! The number worksheet was a counting and matching one the Crew had to colour the picture, count how many items and then associate it with the correct number. Great work!

For art this week, we made our very own passports! They found it so interesting! We explained that we get boarding passes and we need passports to travel. They also watched a few short clips of people going on planes and how the process works being in an airport.

One of the things we have introduced these past few weeks is Sight Words. at the end of each Letter Land book, there is a sight word such as ‘cat’ or ‘mat’ etc. They have turned this into a little game where they sound out each letter to form the word. Wow, they surprised us with how quickly they get the word right! Have some fun with them and let them try some sight words at home.

Our year-end fun day at Eco Tree Parks is coming up, please could you return the indemnity forms! The Crew are getting so excited and we are going to have an absolutely amazing time.

Have a fabulous week ahead!
