IB Principle: Risk Takers – We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker is like being a brave adventurer! It means trying new things, even if they might not work out. When you take risks, you learn and grow, and sometimes you discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you. Imagine if you never tried riding a bike or swimming because you were afraid of falling or getting wet? You would miss out on so much fun! Taking risks helps you build confidence, make new friends, and find new passions. It’s okay to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! So, don’t be afraid to take a chance, try something new, and see where it takes you. You might just discover something amazing!

Writing and Phonics: This week, the Squad focused on the ‘eg’ and ‘ig’ word families. They demonstrated their understanding by tracing words that end with the ‘ap’ sound, matching words to corresponding pictures, and writing sentences in their workbooks using these words. It’s impressive to see how their handwriting skills have improved, with noticeable advancements in letter formation and finger spacing. They’re also showing a great understanding of word structure such as placing them in the correct part of the “cats”. Keep up the excellent work, squad!

Mathematics: This week we practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10, as well as counting backwards from 30. Please continue to reinforce this skill at home. We also practiced subtraction and addition sums on the white boards.

Creative Art: We have been working hard on our art pieces for Art Expo! Saddle up and join us for an unforgettable night, we can’t wait for you to see the Squads tremendous efforts they have put into their artwork throughout the year!

The excitement for Art Expo is growing and the school is a buzz with tickets sales, music, costume ideas, dance moves, art pieces and projects left right and center. One of our most spectacular events next week Friday. Just when you think one year can’t be as good as the next it really takes you by surprise I think we have really pulled this one out of the bag!!!

Even though we have been hard at work preparing for our beautiful Art Expo, we got some serious learning done this week in the Curious Crew class.

I have told the Crew many times that learning our alphabet is one of the most important parts of learning in the Curious Crew class. There were 2 different alphabet games we played. Placing letters of the alphabet on the carpet, we went around in the circle and the Crew got to choose 2 letters and come up and tell the class which letters they had chosen. Then on another day we lay the letters down and again going around in the circle, I told each Crew which 2 letters they had to find on the carpet. And I was super impressed with how well the Crew know their letters! It makes me SO proud, we are getting there with our letter recognition. YAY.

Another important activity we did this week was letter formation. Because name writing in one of the first writings our little ones do, we started with correct letter formation of the letters of their names.

During story time this week we have started learning about rhyming words. This has been so much fun to do while reading stories with the Crew and I have told them that this is something they can do with you as parents at home. So what I do is read the sentence putting emphasis on the first rhyming word then I will let them guess the next rhyming word. You will be pleasantly surprised at how well they guess the next word.

Next week’s theme: Art Expo

Oh, how fortunate our little ones are to still explore their wonderful imagination without boundaries! We used this opportunity to create our own Happy Hopper world.

We rowed our pretend boats down a river with a friend and made the most delicious pastries. We even learnt how to pronounce our pastries by the correct name “Palmier.” We used our fine-motor skills to roll out the pastry with a rolling pin. We mixed the cinnamon sugar and even helped to roll the pastry into the well-known shape of The Palmier. The Happy hoppers thoroughly enjoyed their crispy Palmier, and they were finished in the blink of an eye.

Coach Trevor helped us to strengthen our upper bodies by using the monkey bars. Our Happy Hoppers truly are improving their coordination so well.

For Yoga, this week was all about Balance. The Hoppers moved from one pose to the next balancing on one leg. Our pose sequence was Mountain, chair, tree, airplane, peacock, prayer pose, tree chair mountain. Flowed by breath work and relaxation whilst listening to a story called “the Enchanted Forest”

What a magical week! We had the most amazing time discussing all things fantasy and fairy-tale!

The topics of our discussions this week were Fairies, Unicorns, Dragons, Pirates and Mermaids. We also discussed traditional fairy-tales and learned that almost all fairy-tales start with the words “Once upon a time…” and end with “and they all lived happily ever after.”

We are so impressed with how much our Busy Bugs actually know about fairy-tales and fantasy creatures and loved hearing their own thoughts and stories about everything we were learning about.

For art this week, we focused fully on getting things ready and beautiful for Art Expo next week.

We also made a stunning dragon using paper plates, and carboard cutouts from a different art piece.

Art Expo is exactly a week away folks! Make sure you get your tickets; it really is a night you will never forget!

And with all of that being said, remember to always let your conscience be your guide, Hakuna Matata, happily ever afters’ do exist, just keep swimming and all it takes to fly is faith, trust… and just a little pixie dust.

This week was truly magical as we dove into our fantasy theme! The Pups’ imaginations soared, and it was a joy to witness how creatively they embraced the activities. We focused primarily on finishing up our Art Expo projects, and I can confidently say that we are beyond excited to showcase all the incredible artwork we’ve been working on throughout the year. The countdown to the big day has officially begun, and the excitement is building!

Our fantasy play was a highlight, where I handed out various props and let the Pups’ imaginations run wild. It was heartwarming to see each of them step into their own little worlds, fully embodying different characters. Their enthusiasm and creativity were contagious, and I couldn’t help but smile watching them explore their roles so confidently.

For art, we created an adorable dragon using paper plates, painting it orange. This piece, along with another project for the Art Expo, truly showcased the Pups’ creativity and dedication. They have worked so hard, and I am incredibly proud of what they’ve accomplished!

In FunFit sports, we focused on gross motor skills, climbing the big jungle gym outside. The Pups showed great strength and coordination! Thursday’s Yoga session also helped us stretch and relax after such an active week.

I’m sending lots of well wishes to the Pups who are feeling under the weather—hope you all get better soon and can join us for the final push to the Art Expo!

The Pups and I were busy finishing off some of our art pieces. It has all just been mind blowing to say the very least. The Pups and Teachers have worked very hard planning and preparing for out amazing art show taking place on Friday the 20th of October. This year is going to be a goodie. Please support us and remember to buy your tickets. I’m sure when you see all the challenging work that has gone into the event you will be glad that you joined us to have a blast.

No art will go out this week as I mentioned earlier, we only concentrated on our art pieces. We did however play a lot of fantasy and made-up games which was great for the imagination.

For the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on assessments.

Please may I ask you again to please label all your child’s belongings as there are still many items coming to school that are not labelled.

Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

What an amazing busy week we had to prepare for our Art Expo!

We started our week talking about what fantasy is, this is such a fun theme as we can let our imaginations run wild. We spoke about princesses, fairies, pirates, and of course magical unicorns!

During the week we finished off all our pieces for the Art Expo and made, we worked on our fine motor skills by doing some beading and colouring.

FunFit Sport – we worked on our gross motor skills for assessments, we did monkey bars and balancing beams.

For cooking this week, we made rainbow jelly, every day we mixed a different colour jelly and let it set. To finish it off we whipped up some cream and added some sprinkles. So delicious!

We had an amazing week, please don’t forget to purchase Art Expo tickets, this is an amazing evening and you don’t want to miss it.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Curious Crew had one busy week with all the prep for our amazing art expo coming up ! Between that , we’ve enjoyed our daily morning rings where we have had so much fun discussing different stories and discussing our all time favourites ,

We’ve even taken the time for each child to do their very own puppet shows with their friends. This was an absolute hit and everyone loved being able to participate.

We counted everyday , and focused on our shape and colour , we spoke about which two colours make grey and the different names for the shape of the week that we get.

ART

For art this week , we focused abit on our art expo art that we can not wait for !! And we can’t wait to show it off to all you parents.

We also used our puppet shows for art this week , this ran over several days , and we are very proud of how hard everyone tried and the amazing stories that they come up with. It was so much fun to see and watch.

YOGA

YOGA TUESDAY!

Today was Pom-Pom toes Day.

This activity promotes concentration, depth perception, hand eye coordination as well as strengthing the muscles in our feet and toes. A few little crew members were cheating and used their hands to place the poms poms between their toes.

Next weeks theme : Art Expo week!

Moral conscious theme: Imagination: we focused this week on tapping into our imagination and role play. It is very important for children to use their sense of adventure and imagination whilst playing. We read some of our old fantasy stories such as Cinderella, Snow White and 101 Dalmatians.

Writing and Phonics: We have started with assessments and so we are recapping our letter names and sounds. We are also going over our sound button concept, different word families and more importantly our sigh words. The Squad have come such a long way since the beginning of the year, and we are so proud of them.

Mathematics: For maths this week we recapped our number names 1-10, we also went over rote counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Our Squad sometimes reverse the numbers (which is age appropriate), however we have been practicing this. Well done! Furthermore, we have been going over our 2D and 3D shape names, as well as how to draw them.

Creative Art: The Squad this week have been completing some art pieces for art expo. We are very excited for you all to see. In specific we worked on a Reggio Emilia art piece which involved woodwork. They absolutely loved the idea of hammering (supervised of course).

Music and Cooking: For cooking this week we made a frog out of Marie Biscuits, white chocolate, and marshmallows. This ties last week’s theme along with this week. Princess and the frog.

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor worked through the different stations that were used at the inter-house sports day at the Primary school. The Squad did an amazing job.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Hello lovely parents,

These past two week were an introduction to a new theme – FANTASY AND FAIRYTALES.

What is a Fairytale? A fairytale is often a story which includes magic and has a happy ending.

The children and teachers really enjoyed this theme – it really did bring back some fond childhood memories for us teachers and it was so much fun teaching our class some traditional tales and rhymes – although quite a few of our children already knew so many traditional stories. Some of their favorites include, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears as well as Old Mother Hubbard. And a new one they have never heard of before, Old King Cole. The Crew quite enjoyed learning this new traditional nursery Rhyme.

Because this is a new theme, we decided to really concentrate on story re-telling and acting out. We spoke about different characters found in stories and used some new vocabulary to describe them, we decided that some good words to describe a Princess were; beautiful, caring, kind, pretty whereas some good describing words for a witch were; cruel, cunning, sly, clever, wicked. It was really great to see the children try so hard to think up ways to describe characters and then ask the meaning of some of the less familiar adjectives. Great job Crew!

We have had a very practical week, no worksheets!

We have played memory games using the unifix blocks. I would build a 4 block tower and the Crew had to copy me then I made it harder for them and would build it call out the colour and then hid the blocks and the Crew would have to remember what colour I had used. They did very well in this! What made my teacher heart even more proud was the next day we had the unifix blocks out and the Crew were playing the memory game with each other! How amazing, this just makes me so unbelievably happy!

We are preparing the Crew to work more independently. White boards with markers were put out with letters and numbers. The Crew took turns tracing over a letter board and then a number board. We were super impressed how independently they worked with full number of what to do and take turns doing this activity.

Art expo week has been filled with excited children and teachers! For fantacy we made these colourful and creative masks which we proudly displayed at the art expo and they really stood out on the black background.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Art expo evening! We really hope you got to see, everything still displayed this morning, if you didn’t get to see it on Thursday. Not even loadshedding could dampen the magic of our art expo evening. It was truly spectacular, one of the greatest!

Mid-term break came at the perfect time and was the perfect break to now get us through this last stretch of the year!

We are going straight into assessments if you could only keep your child at home if it is completely necessary, so that we can conduct the most accurate assessments and write the most beautiful reports!

Our next theme is one of our favourites…Under the Sea

Recap

It has been an amazing two weeks of prepping for our annual Art Expo. The Squad was so excited to display their creations and helped us set up for the beautiful evening. Along with this, the kiddies also worked on their Phonics and Mathematics. Here is a breakdown of what we got up to.

Writing and Phonics: The Squad have been shown all their sight words to date, and this will be recapped for the remainder of the year.  We have been focusing on our CVC words and tackled our ‘o’ family words, finally, we wrote sentences using these words. During ring time we went over our letters and the sounds that correspond with them and went through the concept of syllables which they comprehended quite nicely. Well done, Squad!

Maths: We have been counting to and from 30 these past two weeks, along with this they have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. This is important with assessments coming up in the next few weeks. The Squad completed an addition worksheet where they cut out the correct number and pasted it in the corresponding spot. The next worksheet was based on shapes whereby the kiddies traced the shape and then were required to try to draw them independently. We will continue to work through our shapes.

Life Skills: This is a wonderful skill to tackle at a young age – appreciation. We broadened this topic to be appreciative of food, families, teachers, and friends. We also practiced our manners such as letting the girls go first and saying please and thank you. We are proud of how far these kiddies have come this year. For some extra fun, we tasted raw honey, some of the faces the Squad pulled were just too sweet.

Art: We worked on our last two art pieces which were our umbrella fairies and pumpkin scarecrows which were so special. The fairies were made by using sponges, paint, netting, and beads – this activity was completely child-led, and the Squad was allowed to go wild with this one.

Yoga: During Yoga, there was a topic called “Broken Yoga Pose” the same concept as Broken Telephone. The Squad were able to pass the correct message along in all three rounds we did, we finished off with our breathing exercises.

FunFit Sports: At FunFit Sports the Squad were given a challenge, Coach Dave either asked them to kick or throw the ball as far as they could and then the distance was marked indicating where they kicked or threw the ball to. Well done kiddos! They also tried something different. Coach Dave set out a game called statue, stoen and sculptor. The object of the game was for each sculptor to take their stone and make it look like a statue… Coach Dace chose one statue and gave them a specific way to stand, the sculptors would them have to shape their stones (in this case their friends) to look like the statue, they all had tons of fun and laughs!

It has been a great two weeks.
