Moral Conscious Theme: Do Not Waste Food – We explained to the Squad that they must only dish up a small portion of food and if they would like more then they can get more, this will limit food wastage. We also explained to them that a lot of energy goes into producing food, packaging it, and getting it to the store as well as the person who cooks the food for you whether it be chef Thembi or your family at home.

Writing and Phonics: This week Squad worked hard on remembering their sight words and received two new sight words for this week “come”, and “see”. The squad then did two worksheets on the “ab” family, they drew their sound buttons and then matched the words to the pictures. They then wrote put the “ab” family words followed by sentences using their “ab” family words. The Squad is really starting to master their handwriting, Great work!

Mathematics: The Squad completed a fun worksheet on “before and after”. They had to complete which numbers come before and after up to 20 and then did trace by number, they were chuffed with the result of the picture being a clown – they then coloured the clown in.

Creative Art: The Squad made their very own farm animals using recycled materials such as pringles tins and pinecones, they came out super cute and we will be keeping these for art expo.

Music and Cooking: On Tuesday for Music, Teacher Katy came and sang concert songs with the Squad, she taught them how to sing in tune.

We are completing assessments over the next two weeks; please could we ask that your child attends school every day.

Theme discussions this week in the Curious crew consisted of the different farm animals that we get and what exactly their roles are on a farm. We also spoke about what kind of food product we get from each animal. We also watched a few educational videos on how we get wool from sheep.

We also spoke about our 3D shape of the week , the Sphere and we discussed what we find in our day that’s a sphere shape. We focused a lot on our number of the week as well as our phonic letters. We recited the sound as well as the name of the letters

For art this week , we did a cute little chick art piece , where each child was given an egg that had to colour in yellow and draw their own chicks , then a brown piece of paper over with a little hole and they had to rip open the paper showing the chick underneath  it was a very very cute activity !!

We also did a fun Reggio Emilio inspired farm yard activity, where each child had a turn to create their own farm using all different materials from nature. And the pieces that were created were absolutely beautiful and so so unique , this is definitely an art activity that will be used again.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week we had so much fun with coach Trevor , we ran fun races , recording our times and trying to beat our times each round.

HEART MATTERS

This week in heart matters , teacher Hela focused on us being able to read our friends facial expressions to determine their emotions. We also had to find different emotions in magazines and paste them on the correct posters

YOGA

Yoga day:

We did a yoga story-song called “Going on a dragon hunt”. It works as a listening, sequencing and memory game. We listened to the instructions then demonstrated all the various poses, actions and  breath work in the story. At the end I asked the kids questions to see what they remembered. Our poses included: tree, boat, bridge, cow, frog, mouse and lion.

May everyone have a blessed weekend.

We have had a jam-packed week completing assessments. Please note that there will not be many art pieces going home as the assessments have taken up a lot of our time this week.

We started this week off with a continuation of the farm. We spoke about farm animals and the type of animals we find on a farm and all their different sounds.

For art this week we made the most adorable chickens, the children got a picture with the different parts of a chicken, the body, wings, feet, and beak. They first coloured all the body parts, they then finger painted the body and lastly, we glued all pieces together and added some feathers to the wings. We ended up with the cutest chickens you have ever seen.

Our Hoppers created such amazing work that we will be keeping them for Art Expo!

For cooking on Wednesday, we made “piggies in the mud” We made our pigs out of marshmallows and our mud was yummy chocolate instant pudding. Delicious!!! J

Yoga day: We did a yoga story song called “Going on a dragon hunt”. It works as a listening, sequencing, and memory game. We listened to the instructions and then demonstrated all the various poses, actions, and breathwork in the story. At the end, the Hoppers were asked questions to see what they remembered. Our poses included: tree, boat, bridge, cow, frog, mouse, and lion 🦁

On Friday, our Hoppers had some fun learning where we get milk from, we made a cow from cardboard boxes and filled a rubber glove with milk and made little holes in the glove, we tried our hand at milking a cow…it’s not as easy as it looks J

Concert practice is going well, so proud of our hoppers for learning the words to our songs. Please remember to send in concert clothes. We would like to have these in by the mid-term break.

It has been an amazing week!

Please remember to dose up your little ones with extra vitamins, it is getting a lot colder and there are lots of germs going around.

Our theme next week is: Land, Air and Water transport

Have a safe and lovely weekend!

This is always such a favourite with teachers and children alike! Who doesn’t love a good, loud version of Old Macdonald?! There is so much to discuss and learn and so much to see and do.

This week we learned all about the farm and the farm’s animals. We learned all about the different noises these animals make, and the different names that the boy and girl animals have, such as hen and rooster or sheep and ram. We learned the names of the baby animals, like chick, lamb and piglet! It was such fun pretending to be these animals at ring time! Our children have very vivid imaginations and have a lot of existing knowledge about farm animals.

We played tons of farm animal inspired games this week. We went on a nature walk to visit the horses and feed them some yummy carrots and have a quick ride on Frankie, and watch the ducks and swans swim on the pan. We made such a gorgeous piece of art this week but because it is just too cute, we are going to keep it for the art expo.

We did however, do a small side art piece! The Bugs got to colour in some farm animals and had the chance to make their own little farm. Show and tells this week went so well! Thank you Elmo  for bringing your adorable farming set for us to see, and Farryn for bringing the cutest little bunny for us to see and cuddle! We can’t wait for the rest of your turns!

Just a reminder to please label things – everything – even if just with initials. We have had a few cases of jackets and beanies going missing but there are lots of repeat items in the school and sometimes children go home with the same / similar item that they may have at home. It takes a while to work its way through the wash and then even longer for the double to be spotted. If things are labelled it just makes life that much easier! There are many layers that come off during the day and at playtime the children tend to remove their own shoes / socks and jackets as they feel warmer so we cannot always keep track of every item. Once it is returned to our classroom with no name, we often have no idea who it belongs to. Speaking of shoes and socks, please encourage the children to keep their shoes on in the cold. There will always be the odd shoe or sock that gets taken off but if we could try keep feet warm during the cold winter moths that would be great!

Please also get your clothes in ASAP. We got lots of work and fun things to do to them, so the sooner they are in, the better!

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the colder nights where you can snuggle! Please keep safe and germ free!

Next week’s show and tell will be: Mpilo

Another great week, with the theme being On The Farm- Farm Animals! I hope your little ones have been singing your ears off with “Old Mac Donald!” and naming all the animals and sounds they make because we sure have been learning and practicing in class!

For art this week, our Pups made sheep and the Pups did some cork stamping.

We also got our Pups to participate in a threading activity this week which is a fantastic activity for promoting fine motor development in young children. It requires concentration, thinking skills, encourages the use of the pincer grasp between the thumb and forefinger and naturally strengthens the small hand muscles that are vital for holding a pencil to write with, later on.

On Thursday morning we took our Pups on a nature walk down to the ponies where they got to see Troy and Frankie. We asked the Pups what colour the ponies were and some shouted “green!” We are getting to know all our colours but some Pups just seem to have a favourite colour and everything they see is either green or orange! How cute?

We danced, sang and played some super fun games like skipping games and ten pin bowling which was so much fun.

We hope you all have a super weekend ahead, keep warm and safe. See you back on Monday!

Writing and Phonics: This week we completed our new set of CVC family words: “at”. The children are getting the hang of sounding these words out using the sound button method. We encourage you to assist your child when completing their weekly homework, it is important for them to sound the letters out one by one and then read the word out. As well as write them out using the cat method independently without tracing. They can do it! Keep it up Squad.

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week was focused on addition. The Squad had to circle how many items in each group and then add them altogether to get the answer. We also focused on writing the number ‘9’ the correct way around.

Life Skills: “Decision Makers”- This week we recapped over what it means to be a decision maker and how important it is to be able to have an opinion. Often, we are indecisive, and we are too scared to let our voice be heard. We then went on to discuss that we have freedom of speech, and we can say what we feel, and we should not be scared to do so. Making decisions even if they are the wrong ones – help us to grow and learn from those mistakes.

Art: During art this week we drew a still-life, the Squad looked at a fruit basket and the drew the basket at the angle that they viewed the basket. We had a lot of fun with this, and the children tried to be very precise with their fruit. Well done guys!

Afrikaans: For Afrikaans we went over prepositions (voorsetsels), we also went over colours, counting to twenty and body parts.

Cooking & Music: For cooking this week, we peeled our very own sweet potatoes so that we could add them to our chicken nugget dish. How delicious! Music this week was concert based – we are also learning some moves with the songs.

It has been a great week. Assessments are in full swing so please could we ask that your child attend school every day.

See you at Sports Day tomorrow!

The Pups had another great week at school playing, learning and having fun!

This week we learnt about The Farm – Fruits and Vegetables. The Pups got to taste all different kinds of fruit. We played: Guess what this fruit and veg is? And to our surprise our Pups did so well, they could name mostly everything; from the simple names such as apples, grapes, potato to the more difficult such as spinach and broccoli, well done Pups! This is an awesome game to play with your Pup at home, while you are cooking up a storm!

We also spoke about how our fruit and vegetables grow with seeds, soil, water and love!

For art this week, we did some fruit and vegetable stamping. They are just too ADORABLE and we know they are trying their best. We also did some string painting which a good fine motor skill

We concentrated a lot on concert practice this week, listening to and learning our songs.

It’s getting much cooler here and we can definitely feel the icy air here at Ecokids and with Winter being here, along with it comes all the sickies. We are doing whatever we can to teach our Pups that they need to cough in their elbows, not lick their toys and to wash hands as often as possible so that we don’t spread germs! Our Pups are still so tiny so they are the first ones to catch anything flying around in the air which is out of our control. We just need to help them fight against it and let their bodies immune system fight against the germs. Thank you all for keeping your babies at home and sticking to our sick policy, we appreciate it and it helps us fight the spreading of germs. We hope all our Pups who were at home this week are recovering nicely and that they are ready to be back at school next week, we’ve missed them so much!

We are still finding that a lot of clothing hasn’t been labelled, please, PLEASE label everything as we can’t always keep track of who wore what! Items that are not labelled will be put into the lost property box.

We hope you and our Pups have a lovely weekend, keep warm and we will see you back at school on Monday.

Theme discussions this week in the Curious crew consisted of discussion the difference between fruits and vegetables, we watched videos on this discovering that fruits come from the flower of the plant and vegetables come from the root. We focused on counting to 15 and stopping , this has become so easy for the class , they have been enjoying the challenge. We took some time to focus on our alphabet, practicing the name and the sound of the letters.

During morning ring we practiced our concert songs as well as war cry’s for our upcoming sports day !

For art this week , we did a still life painting , each child had a turn to sit and look at the basket of fruit and paint what they saw. The end result of these art pieces were nothing short of amazing ! We were very proud of our very Arty and creative Curious crew kiddies.

We also did a fun activity where the children had to copy a picture that was out on the board for them , we call this guided drawing , and this was a fun challenge that the class tackled like champs !!

These pictures came out so amazing , the class tried so hard.

We did fun little worksheets too , the one was based on our shape of the week ; circle , the worksheet had circles on it , and their job was to create things out of the circles eg ; ball , apple , sun , flower etc.

The worksheet was based on our number 15; their job was to draw only 15 apples on the tree and then complete the colouring of the picture.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week we focused on our races that will be in our upcoming sports day tomorrow , we tackled balancing , obstacle courses and so much more Overall it was a very energetic and super busy sports lesson !

HEART MATTERS

This week in heart matters , teacher Hela focused on us being in control of our actions and behaviour , we did a fun little activity where teacher Hela would call out a scenario and if it was a bad scenario you had to shout “hold your horses” emphasising that you need to control what you feel and what you do.

Reminder : Tomorrow is our SPORTS DAY !

May everyone have a blessed weekend.

This week we learnt about fruits and vegetables on the farm. What a great theme in encouraging our little ones to eat healthy, especially with winter around the corner. We started this week with a theme discussion about fruits and vegetables; we spoke about our favourite fruits and vegetables and the difference between them.

This week our kiddies made a progressive art piece of a delicious pot of soup. The hoppers worked on their cutting skills, cutting out pictures of different vegetables in magazines. We then coloured in a pot and then they stuck on their vegetable pictures.

On Friday the children put their cooking skills to the test when they helped Chef Thembi in the kitchen to make yummy seven-veggie sauce for lunch.

It has been a very busy week with assessments, building puzzles and counting as well as concert practice and sports days practice!

Remember to dose up your little ones with extra vitamins, it is getting a lot colder.

This week has brought chilly weather, but that has not stopped our Bugs from enjoying their days to the MAX! We had a jam packed week learning all about The Farm: Fruit and Vegetables! This is a theme close to our hearts at EcoKids as it is everything we stand for and believe in. Healthy kids and healthy food.

Our Bugs had so much fun discussing the different fruits and veggies and we were very surprised at how many different fruits and veggies our Bugs actually know including the less common ones like Kiwi, Cherries, Cauliflower and Spring Onion. When we asked our Bugs if they enjoyed fruits, we had a very collective YES!!! When we asked if our Bugs enjoyed vegetables… well, not so much! Haha!

We also got to discuss what the differences were between fruits and vegetables. Fruits grow on trees or vines, and veggies grow on or in the ground. As well as that fruits are better to eat raw and veggies are better to eat cooked, although technically you can eat them any way you choose.

For Art this week, the Bugs looked at pictures of different fruits, and coloured in pictures the same colours they saw. We then cut out these fruits and added it to our basket that we painted.

Have a lovely weekend, keep warm and we will see you all next week.
