IB Principle: Risk Takers – We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker is like being a brave adventurer! It means trying new things, even if they might not work out. When you take risks, you learn and grow, and sometimes you discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you. Imagine if you never tried riding a bike or swimming because you were afraid of falling or getting wet? You would miss out on so much fun! Taking risks helps you build confidence, make new friends, and find new passions. It’s okay to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! So, don’t be afraid to take a chance, try something new, and see where it takes you. You might just discover something amazing!

Writing and Phonics: This week, the Squad focused on the ‘og’ and ‘op’ word families. They demonstrated their understanding by matching the words to corresponding pictures, making use of their ‘sounds buttons’ and then writing sentences in their workbooks applying the “cat” method. It’s impressive to see how their handwriting skills have improved, with noticeable advancements in letter formation and finger spacing. They’re also showing a great understanding of word structure such as placing them in the correct part of the “cats”. Keep up the excellent work, squad!

Mathematics: This week we practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10, as well as counting backwards from 30-0. Please continue to reinforce this skill at home. The Squad also completed a worksheet where they had to fill in the missing numbers that come before and after the given number up to 10.

Creative Art: The Squad put their creative minds to work this week and created their own “fruit” using bottle lids and bottle caps, they were super chuffed with their creations and couldn’t wait to take them home to show you!

This week in the Curious Crew class we have concentrated on what utensils and gadgets we use in the kitchen. It was quite interesting hearing some of the answers we had in ring time!

Again, this week we have been hard at work learning the alphabet. Not only being able to recognise the letter but also the sound the letters make, the Crew just love singing their Jolly Phonics! Letter Recognition is one of the most important requirements for Grade R. Please, if you could practice this with your little ones at home. In saying that I’m so proud to say that almost half of the class know all the letters of the alphabet. Wow, yay #proudteacher.

I love this theme and so do the children! Let’s get started…

Ice cream always goes down well so that was our cooking activity for the week. Using condensed milk, heavy whipping cream, vanilla essence, and then the Crew got to choose their flavour: vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. They could not wait to dive in!

The Crew also got creative making their own chef apron felt art. Each Crew got an outline of an apron and they used glue to stick pieces of felt to make their personalized apron.

Last but not least we ended off the week drawing our favourite food. The Crew were so happy, chatting about what they love eating most! It seems that chocolate, hamburger and pizza are our class favourites.

Next week is our Curious Crew market day and shopping activity, please let me know if you have any questions. Crew must have someone to help them on Market Day and an example of the market day slips will go out beforehand so that everyone knows how the slips will work. The parents do not need to worry about handling any money at all. The Crew will also be doing their shopping activity on Wednesday.

What a fun filled week the Hoppers had! From cooking to a wonderful morning showing off our Yoga skills to our parents. It was such a special day to display how Teacher Yoga works with us on a weekly basis.  Thank you to each and every parent who could join us today. It was truly a wonderful morning.

This week was all about cooking and boy did we have fun! For our first activity we focused on our fine motor skills by threading fresh fruit onto skewers. Our fruit kebabs were enjoyed by all the Happy Hoppers. Next, we had our taste buds dancing by creating our very own Calzones. We used wraps as the base, and the kids could choose their own toppings to put on. There was only one word for them: Yum!

We also learnt the difference between a 2D, and 3D shape. It was so interesting watching them explore the rectangular prism and counting the sides. Our “big” word for this week was: dimensional. Most of our Hoppers was able to say this with ease. You all are getting so big now.

For Fun Fit Sports, Coach Trevor made the kids do races and even ran all the way around the playground. The Happy Hoppers had so much fun doing this activity and showing off how fast they are!

We hope all the parents enjoy their time with their little ones this weekend. Don’t forget to ask them to cook their newly learnt dishes for you!

This is one of the teachers’ best weeks (because it gives us all an excuse to break the diet- hehe!). We have had such a blast this week with all the fun cooking, eating and experimenting that we have done! It is so much fun and so rewarding to see the children enjoy themselves so much!

We spent the week discussing all things food, cooking and the kitchen! We chatted about cooking utensils and what we use them for, as well as all the interesting things we can find in a kitchen! The children loved sharing their stories of how they have helped you in the kitchen to prepare meals and we loved hearing what their favourite and least favourite foods are! There were quite a few interesting answers! We loved learning about what gets hot in the kitchen and what to be careful around. We agreed that the stove, oven, toaster and kettle should be treated with caution, knives and scissors can also be dangerous and they should always ask for help.

Our song of the week was “The Soup Song” which also serves as a memory game and the children have to take turns to add ingredients to the pot to make a soup! Some of the soups we made sounded delicious, but the ones that ended up with potatoes, candyfloss, chocolate and chicken… we think we’d rather give those a skip! Haha!

Everyone’s favourite part of the week was of course the days when we got to make our own delicious snacks all by ourselves! On Tuesday, we made our own snack, which was delicious chicken vienna and cheese pizza bread. On Wednesday, we made delicious fruit smoothies for snack. And on Thursday, we helped Chef Thembi make the delicious muffins that were enjoyed at our Mommy/Daddy and Me yoga day!

Every day Chef Thembi or Chef Sonia came to our classroom to get a headcount for the day’s meals and we explained to the children how special these ladies are to us.  We made sure that the Bugs said please and thank you for all of their meals this week.

*A few quick notes*

  • Reminder to send in/purchase your report USB from Amy.
  • Please trim nails on a regular basis. Accidents happens so fast, and shorter nails help minimize the effects.
  • Please remember to send us a hat, even if we have to send it home again every day. It is so hot, and the rule is: no hat – no play! We would hate for the children to miss out on playtime and have to sit in the shade on the deck because they don’t have a hat.
  • Please, please, please… EVERYTHING sent to school must be labelled! Jackets, tops, pants, shoes, socks, bottles and even underwear. A lot of our children throughout the whole school have the same, or very similar items of clothes. Labelling everything just makes it easier for all of us teachers to know what belongs to who.

Have a stunning weekend everyone!

This week, our theme was all about cooking, and the Pups absolutely loved it! We chatted about their favourite foods, and in an adorable twist, every single one of them picked pizza as their number one!  We also had some thoughtful conversations about keeping our hands nice and clean before cooking and being super careful around sharp or hot things in the kitchen.

When it came time to cook, they really surprised me with their independence! Each Pup spread their own tomato paste, sprinkled cheese with enthusiasm, and even carefully cut up their little Viennas. They were so focused and determined—it was heartwarming to watch.

For our fine motor fun, the Pups practiced with tiny beads, carefully adding them onto little sticks and using a tiny scoop to collect them into bowls. The concentration on their faces was just precious! Their hard work and focus truly amazed me!

We also enjoyed some music this week where the Pups had to copy the movement I did. We also focused on our spatial concepts while doing music. They loved it!

We’ve also been busy full speed with reports coming soon, and the Pups are doing great with their assessments!

I’m so proud of all of you!

With all our Pups having such great appetites, this theme is such a hit and so full of fun and learning! We spent a lot of time sampling, stirring, sprinkling, chopping, mixing, blending and licking!

We are lucky to have such a well-equipped kitchen here at our school, and the kitchen staff love visits from our children and are always so obliging. We went for a visit to the kitchen earlier on in the week to see the ovens, the stove, mixers and blenders, all the pots and pans and the funny kitchen utensils! It was adorable listening to the children say things like “spatula” and “whisk”! Such lovely words to get little tongues around!

While we were in the kitchen, we told the children that Teacher Thembi and Teacher Sonia make their delicious snacks and food each day! It was so cute to see their sweet little smiles when they realized that their food does not come from the shop. We said thank you very much! It is important to be thankful for the people who make your food, Pups!

We all had so much fun this week learning all about cooking, but the highlight was making the pizza. This was tremendous fun to see the Pups rolling out their dough and building their little pizza’s a lot of the topping went straight into their little mouths. This was so cute to see after I told them don’t eat the cheese or the any of our pizza toppings.

In the lead up to Christmas we are asking for you to bring in your decorated Christmas boxes that we will use to send home all your Pup’s Christmas stuff! Please try getting these in early to avoid a scramble…

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas out there so please do not be surprised if your Pup comes home singing Christmas carols! We hope you have a lovely weekend.

We decided that the stove, oven, toaster and kettle should be treated with caution, knives and scissors can also be dangerous and they should always ask for help. We had a “knife safety lesson” where we basically played pass the parcel with a knife, highly supervised of course, to teach the children how to properly handle and pass a knife. It was a big success!

On Tuesday, we made our own lunch, which was delicious salami and cheese pizza bread. On Thursday, we made our own Mini cheese, ham and tomato omelettes for lunch. They were delicious, and even the children who aren’t really keen on egg most of the time had a great time munching all of it! Well done Bugs! Last but not least, on Friday, we made delicious fruit smoothies for snack. You can find all 3 of these delicious recipes in the adorable Cook Books your Bugs made.

Every day Chef Thembi or Chef Sonia came to our classroom to get a headcount for the day’s meals and we explained to the children how special these ladies are to us.  We made sure that the Bugs said please and thank you for all of their meals this week.

To start the week off, we had our BIG day out, we had so much fun at the Bird and Monkey Park. We were so excited to see all the animals. Their favourite animal to see was the tiger. We also got to feed the bunnies and guinea pigs. The Hoppers giggled while watching Teacher Kate-Lynn trying to catch a Guinee pig. They are super quick, those little guinea pigs, and so adorable. Luckily, I was able to catch one for them to love! Hahaha!

Cooking is always a fun theme, and the children just love it. They love engaging in free role-play cooking, and they cooked up a storm using our classroom kitchen and utensils.

We have been working on letter recognition and singing Jolly phonic songs to reinforce this. To reinforce our letter of the week, we did a playdough activity with the letter Cc. Keep practicing Hoppers.

During the week, we made all sorts of delicious food and treats. On Wednesday, we made Healthy energy balls with a bit of a treat J. The Hoppers got to mix all the ingredients (Oats, oil, milk, cocoa powder, a little bit of honey, and the best part, smartiesJ). They then rolled them into little balls, and we packaged them in brown paper bags. We were going to send them home, but the Hoppers begged us, and we gave in, and they at them after they had finished their lunch.

On Thursday, we had yummy ham and cheese pizza. Our Hoppers rolled the dough, added some tomato paste, showed off their cutting skills by cutting some ham, and then sprinkled some cheese on top. All our Hoppers enjoyed their pizzas.

We spoke about food and asked the Hoppers what their favourite food is; pizza and broccoli seemed to be winners.  We learned how to prepare the foods and cook them. We learned about the kitchen, utensils, cooking, and braai safety.

For FunFit sports coach Trevor finished the end-year assessments, and they all enjoyed showing off their skills.

It has been a great week.

Our theme next week will be Travel and Holidays.

Have a safe and lovely weekend.

This is by far the most loved theme that we have had throughout the whole year. The class has loved being able to discuss their favourite meals during ring time , and even discussing how they make their favourite meals.

We also focused on our shape of the week quite a lot , as 3D shapes are still new to us , we ensured we made sure everyone understands the shape as well as being able to recognise the shape.

ART

For art this week , we had more of a practicals week , where we had a fun baking activity every day !

Throughout the week , we made :

The most delicious ice lollies , using green yoghurt , lemon juice , icing sugar , water and peaches , we enjoyed these yummy treats on Tuesday

We also made apple doughnuts with icing and sprinkles.

We made our own snack using the most delicious ingredients, we made Nutella bread , with pretzels , bananas and strawberries , this was an absolute hit and definitely the meal of the week.

Overall it was a very fun and busy week  !

We ended our week off with the best day of all !!! Our Curious crew outing , to the Eco Tree Park !!

And this was hands down the best of the year , the kids had a blast being out in the sun , being able to enjoy the outdoors with our closest friends.

Moral conscious theme: This week we focused on the importance of knowing how to cook certain foods and making sure that they are within their expiry date. We discussed how washing our hands regularly is essential especially when we are dealing with chicken. Finally, we spoke about how some people are less fortunate and we need to be grateful for the food that we do receive.

Writing and Phonics: We are currently busy with our assessments, could we please ask that your child attend school every day so that we are able to assess them correctly. We completed our last word families for the year – ‘ut’ and ‘ug’.

Mathematics: For maths we went over our rote counting forwards and backwards. We also revised counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We explained to the Squad that there is a little trick when we count in these ways and how they assist us with calculations. Lastly, we went over our shapes and also learned how to draw a star on top of our Christmas tree.

Creative Art: For art we have started our Christmas art, the Squad used straws (which were fanned at the bottom) so that they could fill in their triangle with different shades of green. They then drew their star and also added little details such as presents at the bottom of the tree. It is too sweet!

Music and Cooking: For cooking this week we made doughnuts, pizza and smoothies. The Squad love being in the kitchen and mixing ingredients – they always get so happy to be given a task and act like little chefs. During these activities they had the chance to cut, blend, bake and cook – we are so proud of how they are all becoming so independent. For music we are practicing the graduation songs.

FunFit Sports: The Squad were assessed this week during FunFit Sports.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

This has been a fun-filled week with the Squad completing a cooking every day! The Squad made mini pizzas, fruit kebabs, volcanoes and sailboats. They learned to appreciate the food so much more because they put in the hard work at creating their snack/lunch. During ring-time we discussed healthy vs unhealthy foods and went over our food pyramid.

Writing, Phonics & Maths: We have been conducting our annual end of year assessments this week and in order to prepare the children, we recapped our letters, sounds and sight words. Along with writing out each of our sight words. We also recapped our mathematical concepts such as adding and subtracting using concrete objects. We are so pleased with how far these Squad members have come.

Life Skills: What a wonderful moral to learn at a young age, we focused on our manners and learned that we should always be appreciative for the food that we get because there are others that go without.

Art: We have been working on some top-secret Christmas art pieces which will go home at the end of the year. The Squad have also been finishing up their Books of Me and we cannot wait for you to see them!

FunFit Sports: At FunFit Sports the Squad were assessed and we are pleased with how much they have improved in their gross motor abilities.

It has been a wonderful week!

The Crew have still been hard at work with assessments this week and by the end of the week we will just have to do some final touches here and there so report writing will be in full swing.

I love this theme and so do the children! Let’s get started…

Ice-lollies always go down well so that was our first food activity for the week. Using canned peaches, double thick yoghurt, lemon juice, some water and caster sugar we made lolly pops that even our fussy eaters loved. All recipes will be sent onto the group.

The Crew also got creative making their own snack. Each Crew got a piece of bread. They each had a turn to spread on some delicious Nutella and then using pretzels and slices of banana to make some cute little pictures on their bread.

Last but not least we ended off the week making a cake in a cup. I don’t think I have ever seen my Crew so happy! Chocolate mouths for days, sorry Mom’s and Dad’s for the sugar rush. Please use these activities at home.

This is our last week for Puzzle Challenge, we will be sending out certificates in the week coming. Well done for your dedication and hard work Crew. I am very proud of all of you.

Next week is our Curious Crew Market Day, please let me know if you have any questions. Crew must have someone to help them on the day and an example of the Market Day slips will go out beforehand so that everyone knows how the slips will work. The parents do not need to worry about handling any money at all.
