Moral conscious theme: Concept of an apology – We explained to the Squad that it is important to apologise even when we didn’t purposely hurt someone else. We must try and understand how another person feels and ask ourselves would we want an apology had something similar happened to us. Everyone makes mistakes however we need to take accountability for our actions as there are consequences.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad worked hard on remembering and reading their new sight word for the week “me”. Please keep practicing sight words “look”, “at” and “me” at home too. We also practiced letter formations “j”,” k”, and “l” in our workbooks, followed by independently writing your own name, well tried Squad!

Mathematics: This week we did a fun worksheet where the Squad had to colour in the number of blocks stipulated, they grasped this concept well and we are so proud! We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards from 30.

Cooking: For our cooking class this week, the Squad helped Chef Thembi in the kitchen make Vanilla Muffins. We went over kitchen rules relating to our theme Health and Hygiene such as always washing hands before working with food, checking expiry dates on items, not eating raw chicken or pork, keeping food it the fridge, and always keeping the kitchen space clean.

Creative Art: The Squad enjoyed making “germ monsters” for their art activity. They used different materials and textures. They then stuck googly eyes, hehe these made us all giggle!

Getting your child into a good healthy lifestyle and hygienic routines at this age, will help them in all the years to come. They are able to understand why we do the things we do… Washing up and washing hands helps with keeping those nasty germs away that make us sick. Healthy living is that much easier to explain when the Crew just love to hear about everything that will help their muscles grow!! I can feel how the muscles have grown on the kids who have finished all their food (wink wink). This helps with empty bowls and a well-nourished body. Picking up toys is also a great way to build muscles!

We have done a few little practical activities to best teach this theme. We took a spray bottle and showed the Crew, when they don’t cover their mouth and nose while sneezing, how much and far they spray goes. But of course all the Crew then just wanted to be sprayed. LOL.

As part of Music and Movement this week, we sang a cute Hand Washing song, and how to correctly wash hands. Rubbing them together, in between the fingers, on top of your hands, squishing hands together and don’t forgets your wrists.

We managed to squeeze in an experiment too. Teacher Tegan put pepper into some milk. We went around to show the Crew how soap takes germs off your hands. When we put a spoon dipped in soap into the bowl of milk and pepper. The pepper will immediately move from the pepper. The Crew were ‘wow’ed’ seeing how the pepper moved away.

In Mind Ninja this week. We discussed being angry. It’s always ok to have these big emotions. We can use tools and activities to help us process and channel them in the right way. I must say it was hard for the Crew to find things that made them angry. We really have a bunch of sweethearts and even tempered Crew this year. So when we are all ‘angry’, we stamped our feet a little and held our fists tight. So we held out our hand and started to breathe counting our fingers as we took deep breathes. We also made a little calm down breathing toy using a toilet roll and streamers. This they can use to breathe through when they are angry!

This week was the first time we explored with paint. I was amazed at the beautiful paintings the Crew did. You are going to be proud with this stunner of an art piece! Treasure it!

FunFit Sports this week focused on balancing and throwing. Each child had a turn to navigate through the balancing bean course set up holding out their hands to the side to keep balance. Then boys vs girls, got 1 minute each to throw as many balls as they could into an 80cm bucket. This was great for hand eye coordination and being able to judge ok, a little higher, a little softer. Our Crew were amazing and some of our girls have really good throwing arms!

Helpful tips: Consequences

At this age implementing ‘consequences for actions’ is a great new way for children to understand and think about their actions before acting. Explaining the natural consequences to a child helps them make a better decision or to think twice about the actions they are about to take. Consequences both positive and negative apply here – good behaviour receives rewards and bad behaviour receives negative consequences eg. No TV or not getting to see that friend they wanted to visit over the weekend. Etc.

We will be implementing consequences into the classroom to help the Crew understand their actions better. Let’s bring up children that CHOOSE to make the right decisions!

Here’s what happened in our Happy Hopper class this week….

We learnt all about health and hygiene. How to take a bath and the importance of brushing our teeth and our hair. We also spoke about toilet hygiene. We sang a song called “This is the way we brush our teeth!”

For our art piece, we traced our hands, cut them out and stuck them onto paper. The one hand we toothbrush painted with green paint to represent some germs and added some tiny bits of coloured paper for the “dirty hand.” On the other hand we printed some blue circles to represent soap bubbles on “clean hands.” The Hopper enjoyed this activity so much.

We did two germ experiments to demonstrate how quickly germs can spread and what we can use to stop spreading germs.

Our first experiment was a science experiment where we had a plate of water and pepper floating in the plate. We explained to the children that the pepper is like the germs. As we added soap to our fingers and put our finger in the water the pepper moved to the side of the plate, showing how soap kills germs. Our second experiment was with glitter. We put some glitter on our hands and pretended that the glitter was the germs. As we touched our legs, hands, or faces the glitter would spread. We explained to the children that this is how easily germs can spread and we need to wash our hands with soap.

Our Hoppers learnt about the letter H this week and we sounded out the letter and then we looked around the class to see if we could see if we could see objects that start with the letter H.

Happy Hoppers Yoga:We started off with our yoga warm up with our alphabet yoga pose song. Next, we listened to the breath-by-breath yoga song. We used our breathing technique on our colourful magic orb. Inhaling as you pull the ballot makes it bigger and pushing it closed. makes it smaller as you exhale This is a great activity to improve their pincer grip.

For FunFit Sports this week the Hoppers showed off their balancing skills. They had to balance a bean bag on their head while following a pattern on the floor, walking on the line of the pattern.

What a wonderful week we had!

PLEASE check your little one’s nails. Keep them short and neat.

Our theme next week is: My Emotions, Valentines Day.

“Brush, brush, brush your teeth, get them very clean. Brush them left brush them right, plaque is very mean!

Wash, wash, wash your hands, get them very clean. Do the scrub, do the scrub, germs are very mean!”

What a fun and interactive week we have had! Learning about hygiene is quite a big thing for these little people, what with fingers in noses and mouths, coughing without covering the mouth and touching everything and everyone possible! Hehe!

We reinforced washing hands after playing outside and before meals, how to wash them properly and make sure all the germs are gone.

We discussed the different ways we clean our bodies, in the bath or shower, some people use bars of soap while others use liquid soap. Washing our hair and all over our body!

The best part of this week were our 2 practical activities to teach health and hygiene.

Our first one was “how germs spread”. Teacher Gemma used green glitter on her hands, and made a big (and fake) sneeze, but forgot to cover her mouth! This made all of her “germs” fly everywhere! We then spoke about how we need to cover our mouths and noses when we sneeze or cough, otherwise our germs will fly away. We also learned that germs stick to our hands, and get passed on to everything that we touch, and the only way to get rid of them, is to wash our hands.

Our second practical activity was the Bugs getting to brush their teeth after lunch at school. We were so impressed to see how well our Bugs know how to brush and rinse, making sure to get every inch of their mouths minty-fresh!

For art this week, we made the most beautiful abstract hygiene paintings using a comb, earbuds, a sponge, soapy paint and a toothbrush. The Bugs had so much fun using these everyday items in such a unique way!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend!

See you all next week!

This week our theme was all about Health and Hygiene.

We spoke about eating healthy food and what it means to be healthy. We took a look at a few healthy veggies and fruit that we found in the kitchen. We had fun washing our hands with soap.

For art this week we created our own mouth and added some teeth. We also did an activity showing the difference between clean teeth and dirty teeth, they had to show us which teeth were dirty and which were clean. We did some free painting which was so much fun. The pictures are all so different and beautiful – just how we love our art to be! Some children love to mix colours, others keep the colours very separate. Some prefer only 2 or 3 colours while others wanted all of them! Amazing to see their creative processes.

We learnt about the concept of an apology, and I am happy to see that all of our children say sorry with no problem if they need to. This is wonderful and makes classroom life a lot more pleasant and happy!

We also did some messy play during the week and the Pups enjoyed it so much!

Here’s what we got up to this week;

For our art piece this week, we made amazing hand washing sensory bags. We traced our hands and cut them out and stuck them onto paper. We then filled zip lock bags with hand soap and all sorts to make germs. This is a great sensory activity where the Hoppers can play with the bag by moving all the germs away from the hands. Our Hoppers loved making the sensory bag and couldn’t wait to take them home. I hope they enjoy!

We did two germ experiments to convey how quickly germs can spread and what we can use to stop spreading germs. We explained to the children that this is how easily germs can spread and we need to wash our hands with soap.

Fine motor skills are very important at this age, we incorporated a fine motor activity for our shape, colour and number for the week. Our Hoppers had to trace over the triangles and colour them in green as well as trace over the number three.

Our Hoppers are starting to remember the Jolly Phonics’ songs based on the letters that we have completed and this will help them in identifying their letters and their sounds.  Please ask your children to sing “We are clicking castanets C C C” …

 Happy Hoppers Yoga:

We listened and did yoga actions to a story by Cosmic Kids. The theme was Jungle Adventure where we did elephant, lion, snake, monkey, gorilla and crocodile poses. We also learnt the baby names of each while doing the poses:

Snake – snakelets 🐍

Croc- hatchling

Lion- cup

Elephant- calf

Gorilla- infant

For FunFit Sports this week the Hoppers showed off their climbing skills. They really impressed Coach Dave with their upper body strength, getting to the top of the jungle gym with very little assistance as well as finishing off the lesson with some monkey bars! Such strong arms Hoppers!!

What a great week we had!

Wow! What an exciting and fun week we’ve had. During ring time we enjoyed discussing weekend news, our theme of the week as well as the weather and days of the week and counting to 30 and backwards.

Writing and Phonics: The Squad worked hard on remembering their sight words from last week and received two new sight words for this week “in” and “me”. For handwriting we traced the letters “g,h,i,” and then wrote them independently. Please practice the following sight words with your child: ‘look’, ‘at’, ‘me’, ‘in’. It is important for your child to be able to sound out each letter when reading the word and then reading the word altogether.

Mathematics: This week we did a worksheet where you needed to paint the number of blocks that match the numbers in the circles followed by a fun 3D and 2D shapes worksheet where they matched the 2D shape and the objects to the 3D shapes, everyone grasped this well! Great work Squad!

Afrikaans: We recapped colours and introduced animal names this week.

Creative Art: We completed our very own food pyramid. They worked in a team and cut out pictures of different foods from magazines and stuck them into the correct places on our food pyramid which consisted of sugars, fats and oils, protein, dairy, carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables.

Music and Cooking: On Tuesday for cooking the Squad did an activity on healthy and unhealthy foods where they had two columns and had to differentiate the foods as well as had a discussion on why certain foods are healthier than others. 🍩🍓 We then covered food safety and hygiene such as washing hands and counters before preparing food and before eating, washing fruit and veg, sneezing and coughing into your elbow, keeping food in the fridge, and not left out.

For music the Squad learnt a few new Smart Squad songs as well as practiced rhythm, syllables with clapping and tempo. We also introduced a song which we will be using for graduation at the end of the year.

FunFit Sports: The Squad’s aiming skills were put to the test at FunFit Sports this week. The children had to throw a ball through a tire! Coach Dave was very impressed! Well done, Squad!

Getting your child into a good healthy lifestyle and hygienic routines at this age, will help them in all the years to come. They are able to understand why we do the things we do… Washing up and washing hands helps with keeping those nasty germs away that make us sick. Here are a few poems we did this week, please repeat them at home to see how much of it your Clever Curious Crew know! I’m sure will actually be surprised if they hear you saying them too.

Green POEM

Green is the grass,

String beans and peas.

Green are the branches on a Christmas tree.

Shape SONG

Tommy Triangle

Proud as can be!

Count my sides 1,2,3.

We had another full week of creative activities with the Crew this week! We did a cute little dirty and clean hand prints which they learnt a little poem while doing this activity:

I wash my hands until they’re clean. To get rid of things they’ve never seen.

I do this many times a day. To shoo the dirt and germs away.

This week , we got real creative , and we all made our very own soap and we got to decorate it with glitter , the kids loved this and enjoyed being able to mold their own soap bar

We also enjoyed a fun educational video about health and hygiene and why it’s important to keep our bodies clean 🙂👍🏼

Using markers and laminated paper , we focused on the letter formation of our letter of the week “c” , the class did really well and they were super proud of themselves too.

Helpful tips: Consequences

At this age implementing ‘consequences for actions’ are a great new way for children to understand and think about their actions before acting.

We will be implementing consequences into the classroom to help the Crew understand their actions better. Let’s bring up children that CHOOSE to make the right decisions.

For our art this week we made a beautiful picture of a healthy happy tooth and a toothbrush and toothpaste in a cup which is 2D. Please see our blog photos. Our last experiment was glitter germs! We used this experiment to show the children that even though you can see the glitter, there are lots of germs on hands and skin that you can’t see! They have been told to wash their hands until they can’t see any more glitter. We had a lovely sensory activity popping bubble wrap taped to floor the Pups loved walking and running over the bubble wrap. The Pups went to yoga with teacher Nicole and they listened to a story by Cosmic kids about a visit to old MacDonalds farm and after we practiced some really cool animal poses. This activity was really great for using their imaginations. We also went to FinFit sports with coach Dave and did some track running and some ball rolling. These little Pups are just so adorable. So the Pups had a jam packed busy week and deserve a lovely relaxing weekend.

I have loved spending time with your little busy bodies.  Enjoy looking at all the photos from the week!

Last week was filled with so much fun! We learnt all about keeping healthy and hygienic.

Writing and Phonics: Last week we reiterated the previous letters but also introduced three brand new letters of the alphabet – ‘’Gg’’, ‘’Hh’’ and ‘’Ii’’. We practiced writing these letters on our white boards first and then we moved onto our handwriting skills in our lined books. The Smart Squad are impressing us each week with their handwriting skills! We added two new sight words this week, ‘’in’’ and ‘’here’’ – which formed our first sentence ‘’look at me in here’’. The children were beyond chuffed that they could read a whole sentence! Congratulations Squad! We made ‘’look’’ glasses and then the children found and circled their sight words! Lastly, they wrote the sentence in their lined books.

Maths: In Maths we worked through basic addition concepts and focused on adding more and more objects. We then had our very own quilt to make using our shape of the week, a triangle! The Squad had to maneuver their triangles into the squares to form their quilt. We also emphasised the colour of the week by cutting out green triangles.

Life Skills: The concept of an apology is always a lovely life skill to learn; the Squad have been practising apologising to those that we may hurt. As teachers, we may sometimes forget to do something and then we demonstrate to the children that we too can apologise. We used different scenarios and worked through ways that we might need to apologise to others.

Art: During ring-time Teacher Amber showed the children how quickly germs spread. She used glitter and the Squad absolutely adored seeing how glitter (germs) spread from their hands to their friends’ arms when they hug each other or how the glitter sprinkles all over when someone sneezes! After this explanation the children created their very own germ monsters using brown paper bags and other bits and bobs! This art activity will be kept for the art expo – we cannot wait for you to see their beautiful and ‘scary’ germ monsters!

 It was an awesome week!

The Crew loved singing our theme song!

Brush, brush, brush your teeth. Brush them every day!

We put toothpaste on our brush to help stop tooth decay!

Floss, floss, floss your teeth. Floss them every day!

Using the string between the teeth, helps keep plaque away!

Clean, clean, clean your teeth. Clean them every day!

Your teeth will sparkle for many years, in the most beautiful way!

Last week we had so much fun! We started off the week by discussing the importance of health and hygiene. We demonstrated to the children how far a sneeze can travel if you don’t cover your mouth. We also did an experiment with three pieces of bread. One piece of bread that wasn’t touched by anyone, one piece of bread that was touched by everyone and one piece of bread that we sprayed with sanitizer. We observed how the touched piece of bread full of germs grew the most mould on it.

The first group of Crew had lots of fun making their very own soap with teacher Clarissa while the others worked on their ‘I brushed my teeth!’ worksheet which they completed so well!

One of our favourite activities this week was creating a germ! The children had so much fun creating it with strips of paper and glue. The little germs were all so cute!

We did various other activities that just showed us teachers how clever these children are! We are super proud of how they are absorbing everything we are teaching them!

Below are two of the poems we did last week, please repeat them at home to see how much of it your clever little ones know! We are sure they will actually be surprised if they hear you saying them too!
