IB Principle: Balanced – We explained to the Squad how important it is to take care of their physical, emotional and mental well-being such as, eating healthy food, exercising and getting enough sleep as it helps us feel happy and calm.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on the “it” family and wrote sentences in their workbooks using the cat method. We are so pleased with how well they are pogressing with their handwriting, focusing on finger spacing and placing the letters in the correct part of the “cat”. They also decoded words using sound buttons in their Time2Read books. Great work Squad!

We had a short week due to the Public Holiday and Sports Day – Well done to the Squad on their incredible performance on the field, you all ran your heart out!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What a buzzing week it has been. The Crew loved exploring the fascinating world of insects and bees, and we learned some very interesting facts about bugs and their life cycles.

FunFit Sport with Coach Trevor had the Crew practicing their running skills, and I must say some of our little ones are incredibly fast. Their energy and determination were wonderful to see.

During cooking we had an eye-opening discussion about how different tribes and countries cook with insects such as worms, crickets and even spiders. The children were both fascinated and surprised by how many people around the world include insects in their diets.

Art this week was a real highlight. The Crew completed two pieces so delightful that we will be keeping them for our upcoming art expo. The first was a bug jar where the children coloured in their jars and filled them with different insects. The second was an egg carton caterpillar, which they painted and decorated with legs, eyes and other creative touches. Both projects came out beautifully.

In maths we focused on shapes and number work. The Crew completed a hexagon worksheet as well as a simple addition worksheet. For the addition sums we worked together as a class, counting objects and writing down the answers. This group activity helps prepare them for the more independent work they will encounter next year.

Yoga this week was a sensory adventure. Using their “super-hearing powers,” the children closed their eyes and tried to recognize different sounds played through the speaker. They listened carefully to coins dropping, paper being scrunched, scribbling, bubbles popping, pens clicking, locks opening and water running. We finished the session with the yoga bell and calming breathwork.

We also continued with our Jolly Phonics practice, number recognition, and revision of key skills. As assessments approach, please continue practicing numbers up to 10, colours, shapes and the alphabet at home. This extra support makes a big difference in your child’s confidence.

Well done Crew on another wonderful week of learning and exploring. Have a fantastic weekend.

This week, we learnt all about insects – the tiny creatures that crawl, fly, and buzz all around us.

What are insects?

Insects are small animals with 6 legs.

Most have two feelers (called antennae).

Many insects have wings to fly.

They live in gardens, parks, and even in our backyards. Can you spot an insect today? Maybe a butterfly, a ladybug, or even an ant!

Busy Bees

Bees are special insects.

Draw your favourite insect with lots of colours.

Pretend to be a buzzing bee and fly from “flower to flower” in your classroom or garden.

Remember

Insects may be small, but they play an IMPORTANT role in our world. Let us be kind to them and watch them with gentle eyes.

Help flowers grow by carrying pollen (that’s called pollination).

Make honey for us to enjoy.

Live together in a home called a hive. Bees are especially important helpers in nature. Without them, many plants and flowers wouldn’t grow!

The Hoppers went on a nature walk to see if we could spot some insects and boy did, we see so many interesting insects. We go to school in such an amazing place to view all these different insects and bees.

The Hoppers had their photos taken this week and they were all such cutie pies.

For art, this week we worked on two artworks. The first one the Hoppers had to count out 6 bottles lids to make a caterpillar and paste it onto cardboard then draw the eyes, mouth, and legs. The second one we made a beautiful ladybug, but this one is a secret that we will keep for our art show.

We had such a wonderful week. I hope you have an amazing weekend.

This week was all about Insects and Bees – and wow, the Bugs impressed us with how much they already knew about this exciting theme! 🐝🦋🐞

During ring time, we had some wonderful discussions about the many different types of insects we get, their bright colours, and of course, how many legs they all have. The Bugs also learnt that some insects can be dangerous, like venomous spiders, and we reminded them that we should never touch those types of insects.

To kick off our week, we played a fun group activity where Teacher Monette placed pictures of different insects all around the classroom. The Bugs had to listen carefully and follow instructions about which insect they needed to find and touch. They did an absolutely amazing job listening and participating!

Next, we enjoyed a matching game, where the Bugs paired up the same insects with their friends. This activity helped them practice their observation skills and teamwork – and once again, they did so well!

For art, the Bugs created the cutest little bees! 🐝 They had to carefully copy the same bee that Teacher Monette had made, and the results were just too adorable to keep to ourselves. We decided to save this special project for our upcoming Art Expo! Along with this, we also worked hard on a few other secret art expo projects that we can’t wait for you to see – they are going to be extra special and showcase everything we’ve been working on throughout the year.

Reminder: Please continue to send us any empty cereal boxes (750g and 1kg sizes). These will be very useful for some of our upcoming activities. Thank you so much for your support!

This week the Playful Pups were buzzing with excitement as we explored the world of insects and bees!

Normally, our week kicks off with some calming Monday morning yoga, but this time our mats had to be rolled away to make room for the annual school photos. Monday was all about our class photo — 19 little Pups, a handful of teachers and assistants, and one very patient photographer. Getting everyone to look at the camera, stop fidgeting, and attempt something close to a smile was no small feat. After much wiggling, giggling, and a few “please look this way!” moments, we finally managed to capture the shot. Now we wait eagerly for the results, fingers crossed it looks as perfect as we imagine!

In keeping with our Insects & Bees theme, we took a little walk-in search of some creepy crawlies. Armed with enthusiasm (and a good dose of bravery), the Pups dug around for earthworms. We only managed to find one lonely little worm, but what a superstar it was — admired, poked, and even gently held by the bravest hands. Who knew one worm could cause so much excitement?

Back in the classroom, our creativity bloomed with dot-painted butterflies in bright, beautiful colours. These masterpieces will be proudly displayed at our upcoming Art Expo in October, an event that always promises to be a highlight of the school year.

Wednesday was extra special as we celebrated Heritage Day here in South Africa. To keep the spirit alive, on Friday the Pups will be dressing up in their heritage outfits, and we can’t wait to see the wonderful variety of colours, patterns, and traditions on display.

Thursday brought more camera action with our individual portraits. Getting one toddler to smile on cue is tricky enough — multiply that by 19 and you’ll understand why feathers, tambourines, and some rather silly teacher antics had to come out. Sometimes the smiles flowed easily, other times they required tickles and plenty of clowning around. But we did it! Now we just must wait a couple of weeks to see those little grins immortalised in print.

It’s been a week filled with worms, wings, wide smiles (eventually!), and a whole lot of heritage pride. The Playful Pups are truly buzzing with joy, and we can’t wait for next week’s adventures.

IB Principle: Recap – we have spent the year alternating between the different IB principles and we asked the Squad to think back and remember which one they might have connected with the most.

Writing and Phonics: We have been focusing on completing our word families and learning about how important it is to use our sound button concept from our Time2Read programme. Next year the Squad will learn more about decoding words and how blending helps us with reading because it is it’s on sound on its own. We also went over some digraphs including the “sh” and “ch” family. This was a sight introduction into the many ways that words can be decoded.

Mathematics: The Squad have been practicing counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s – and this week we completed a worksheet that had the number chart where we could see how we can move across that chart when we count in “bounces”. Just like when we froggy jump to complete addition and subtraction – the froggy can also jump in 2s and 5s and 10s. We also recapped our 2D and 3D shapes – matching realistic every day objects with those that symbolise 3D objects. They are coming along nicely with this.

Creative Art: We created such a beautiful card where the Squad stuck together and created their own bee because they “BEElieve in themselves”. We are also gearing up for our annual Art Expo so we have been putting all of our art together and completing the last few that we need to finish. This week the Squad used their light board to trace over their faces for a “wanted” poster – we cannot wait for you to see it!

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our graduation.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What a busy two weeks of learning all about insects and bees, ponds and all the creatures that live there!

The Happy Hoppers enjoyed listening to sounds of ponds at night and trying to identify the creatures. They even learned that the African bullfrog is an endangered species. How lucky are we to go to school right next to one of South Africa’s bullfrog conservation wetlands? Our “big word” this week was Amphibian, and our Hoppers are doing quite well with this word. We also went through the life cycle of the frog! What an amazing transformation these creatures go through.

We concentrated on our Hoppers cutting skills this week as well as placement of drawings. It’s amazing how much they have grown since the beginning of the year. Well done Hoppers. We have started assessments this week, and we are so excited to see all the progress they have made.

For Fun Fit Sports this week, Coach Trevor made the Happy Hoppers play a game of bowling! What a fun way to improve their hand-eye coordination. They truly enjoyed this activity and tackled this task with immense enthusiasm.

Yoga Day

“Rollercoaster ride” Hoppers had to sit in a line with our legs spread wide on each side of our friend. We stretched upwards, forward, left and right. Our breathing exercise: lying on our backs with our head on our tummy. We matched our breathing with each other, feeling our friends’ tummy lift up as we breathe in and down as we exhale. The aim is to breathe together as one but there was so much giggling going on!

Have a lovely weekend with your little ones. I’m sure they are going to love our theme: Fantasy, next week.

“Once I saw a caterpillar climb up in the tree… He wrinkled long, he wrinkled short, he wrinkled right to me! I put him in a little box… “don’t go away” I said… but when I looked again it was a butterfly instead!”

We have a had buzzing good time learning about insects and bees this week! Our Busy Bugs (a very appropriate name if you ask us…) have absolutely loved seeing and hearing about all the different types of bugs we find in our garden! And we were so proud to see how many of them know so many cool facts about bugs!

Just a few of the bugs we discussed were; grasshoppers and how high they can jump, spiders (which technically aren’t considered to be Insects, but in our opinion, still count) with their 8 legs and webs, lady bugs with their red shells and black spots, butterflies who go from an egg to a caterpillar to a chrysalis to a beautiful butterfly that flies around, bees who make honey and have a very sharp stinger, worms that live underground, ants that are super strong and love sweet stuff, dragonflies that hover over water, praying mantis that can actually box and look like they are praying and even mosquitoes that suck our blood and leave behind itchy bites!

We sang lots of songs about all of these bugs and watched a video showing us how they move around, what they eat and where they live.

For art this week, we made;

  1. The most adorable little Bees. These will be on display at Art Expo!
  1. We snuck in some other Art Expo pieces that are looking amazing!

Thank you to everyone who brought show and tell this week!

Reminder: Don’t forget to book your Art Expo tickets! It really is an incredible night that you don’t want to miss!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and we will see all next week for another exciting theme!

Next Week’s Theme: Frogs and Ponds

Next Week’s Show and Tell: Everyone to please bring something theme related!

Ribbit, ribbit!

Croak, croak!

Hop, hop, hop!

We had a hopping good time this week learning all about frogs, their lifecycle, what colours they can be, what they eat and where they live… which brings us to ponds. We learned about all the different animals that live in or around ponds and the type of plants/flowers that grow there.

We spoke about the life cycle of a frog, how and where they lay their eggs, which then hatch into teeny tiny little tadpoles. These tadpoles eat lots of food a quickly grow from a tadpole into a froglet (which is the “teenage” stage of the frog, before it loses its tail), and then eventually grows into a frog. We spoke about how some frogs can be poisonous, and you can usually tell which frogs are poisonous because they are very brightly coloured. We spoke about how a frog uses its tongue to catch insects flying past and about how important they are to a wetland and/or pond ecosystem.

We sang lots of different songs about frogs and spent many days hopping our way around the classroom and playground. It was so much fun!

The highlight of the week was Friday, when we got to take a walk across the plot into Uncle Georges house and visit his amazing pond. We got to see first-hand all of the plants we were learning about in class, the giant Koi fish that we also got to feed. We took our snack down with us and enjoyed this pond-side, picnic style! We also got a have a turn on the merry-go-round and absolutely LOVED this!

For art this week, we made the cutest little tadpoles by painting egg cartons green, cutting them out and adding eyes and little tails to them. We will be keeping these to display at Art Expo.

We hope you have a lovely weekend, rest well and we will see you next week for some more Busy Bugs fun!

As we kicked off the new season back at school, we dove into the wonders of insects and bees! We explored the bright, cheerful colors of different insects all around us and talked about what bees like to eat and the colours ft them. Our little Pups truly shined as they learned about shapes and colors while counting up to 10—I’m overflowing with pride at how well they did!

With the Art Expo just around the corner, our creative projects are in full swing, and I can’t wait for all the lovely Pups’ parents to join us for this exciting night. The children have been working hard, and their enthusiasm is contagious!

Next, we hopped into the delightful theme of frogs and ponds. We learned all about the different colors of frogs, the funny sounds they make, and their favorite places to hang out. When it came time to sing the Froggy Song, the joy on their faces was priceless—they absolutely love it!

For our art project this week, we made adorable frogs using paper and green paint. To make it even more fun, we got a little messy by painting with our hands! Watching the Pups giggle and enjoy getting their hands covered in paint was such a joy. The creative process was as delightful as the final creations!

On the potty training front, I’m excited to share that several Pups are proudly on the “undies” train and doing an amazing job. It’s heartwarming to witness their progress and growing independence. This spring is off to a wonderful start, filled with learning, laughter, andcreativity!

Moral conscious theme: Giving – This week we explained to the Squad that hard work does indeed pay off. We discussed how important it is to TRY before we accept a failure – we will only learn when we give it a go. Once we realise that working hard assists us in reaching our goals it will motivate us even more to do so. Grade 1 is a goal for all of our Squad at the moment and we know that they are all working hard to get there.

Writing and Phonics: This week we went over our sight words as NO new sight words were introduced. We are nearing the end of the year and we are almost complete with our sight word pack – they are doing well with this but must continue to practice.

We also introduced a new word family “ig”, we recapped our sound buttons, and the Squad finished a worksheet based on this. We also wrote sentences. We do encourage that your child continues to practice using the cat method this will only assist them further when they are in Grade 1.

Mathematics: This week we completed a worksheet on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We also had a worksheet that was based on the principle of ‘doubling’. We were pleased to see that most of the squad realised this trick and then completed the worksheet by counting in 2s. Well done!

Creative Art: Our art this week was based on the theme and the children made a beautiful poster of a self-made bee and the words ‘bee-lieve in yourself’ written underneath. They looked lovely and we know that you are going to love it.

We also finished up a art piece for art expo which was music based and the children used ‘scratch/magic paper’ to write music.

Music and Cooking: For cooking the Squad made their own snack using pineapple, apple, blueberries, bananas, pringles, chocolate chips and crumpets. They were shown an example of a bee/butterfly and they had to create their very own one using those items. It is always such a joy watching them become creative by using their imaginations – this ensures that each piece is completely unique and has their flair to it.

FunFit Sports: No FunFit this week (public holiday).

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

The Curious Crew had one busy week this week! Our ring times consisted of us discussing the different insects , and what makes them insects , and we spoke about why bees are important to nature.

We practiced our shape , and how many sides it has , and we focused on our number too..

ART

For art this week , we focused a bit on our art expo art that we can not wait for !! And we can’t wait to show it off to all you parents.

We also did a very cute Reggio Emilia loose parts activity where each child had the job of creating their own insect garden using different materials as well as plastic insects. This was a very fun project for the class to complete.

We had the best baking Friday where we made cute little caterpillars using bananas , smarties and pretzels , the kids loved doing this and enjoyed eating it too.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week coach Trevor tested the class by timing their speed and their abilities on the playground. He timed as each child had to swing through the monkey bars , climbed the jungle gym , and raced to climb down , each child did their very best to get the best time.

YOGA

Yoga Day for Curious Crew:

YAY-YAY YOGA!

Keeping with this weeks theme of Insects, we did yoga to the song; ABC’s of insects. We then made a pot of “Insect Soup” discussing different types of insects and their characteristics.
