Moral conscious theme: Manners and not interrupting – We explained to the Squad what manners are, why they are important as well as that interrupting is unfair on others.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad worked hard on remembering and reading their new sight word for the week “here”. We also played a fun game where the Squad had to go hunt for their sight words around the school. We are very impressed by how the Squad have remembered their sight words, please keep practicing sight words at home too. We also practiced letter formations “m”,” n”, and “o” in our workbooks, followed by writing their name using the “cat method”. –  Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week the Squad did a dot to dot worksheet where they had to trace the dots to the correct numbers, they were impressed with the end result which turned into a fish. They then coloured the fish in.

Cooking: For our cooking class this week, the Squad sat around the table to eat their lunch and learnt etiquette and manners around the table such as chew with your mouth closed, do not speak while you have food in your mouth, how to hold utensils properly, ask to be excused from the table and do not play with your food or waste your food.

Creative Art: The Squad enjoyed making a ginormous food pyramid, they cut out different food from magazines and newspapers. They the stuck the different foods in the correct food group, such as carbohydrates, fats and oils, fruits and vegetables, proteins and Dairy products.

 Have a wonderful weekend!

The Crew did really well in this week’s activities! We learnt so much about food pyramids and setting the table. After this week the Crew are definitely more clued up with manners and etiquette!

The MANNERS song

We say thank you, we say please.

We don’t interrupt or tease.

We don’t argue.

We don’t fuss, listen when folks talk to us.

Share our toys and take our turn,

Manners are easy to learn.

After discussing the food pyramid, explaining that meat is protein and breads, pastas and rice is carbohydrates, we also explained that the bottom of the pyramid is what we need to eat the most of and as it moves up we need to eat less of. Right at the very top the children know they are only allowed a little bit of sugar and sweets, so only on weekends. You are welcome! Lol.

Music and Movement: This week for music and movement we started practicing for our concert. The Crew loved hearing all the new somgs that we are going to learn as well as doing the movements with the songs. ‘Ooo I think that I found myself a cheerleader..’ So exciting!

Mind Ninja’s topic this week was feeling scared. We went around to discuss what makes the Crew scared and what helps them feel better or comforts them when they are scared. At the beginning of each session we will give ourselves a big hug and repeat; I love me, I am special, I am brave, I am strong and I can do ANYTHING. So when we added being scared to our song, it was only appropriate to shout I AM BRAVE. We also made worry monsters, a purple one and an orange one. These little monsters will be on display in class and the kids will be able to draw a picture or ask one of us to do a write up to feed the worry monster, who loves to take away worries.

Since our colour of the week is orange, and orange is a secondary colour. The Crew teamed up to mix red and yellow hand prints to make orange. This was such a cute and fun activity. What a hit!

We did such a cute little activity on Wednesday morning where we helped the children set a table. This was such a great activity and the Crew even asked us a few interesting questions about it. If you have dinners at home where you have to set the table definitely ask them to help you.

The Crew coloured in a rainbow of fruits and veggies and WOW that beautiful colouring in was done! Please let your child colour and free draw at home, some of the Crew did get tired after only colouring in a few pictures and with our Grade we do, do more colouring in, writing and drawing to help prepare them for the work they will do in Grade R.

Important tips: Explain explain explain, at this age the Crew have a much better understanding and we can use this for teachable moments in your daily living. Especially when it comes to rules and when rules are broken. Use examples that you do yourself, this week I used the example that if I decided I wasn’t going to stop at the red light because I didn’t feel like it, what would happen? I also explained that we ALL have to follow rules everyone in the world. Use these teachable moments, the Crew also enjoy role play situations and acting out scenario’s.

Ff – Food

What a fun filled week – as always! We learnt all about healthy food choices, using our manners and etiquette – which is a fancy word for being “posh”, “polite” and “correct”. Our Bugs learnt some big words this week including “car-bo-hy-drates!” (which is how they say it – hehe) and “protein”. We learnt that chicken, eggs, meat and fish are types of proteins and bread, pasta and rice are types of carbohydrates. We learnt that a healthy plate of food should have some of each on it, as well as lots of veggies or salad! Our Bugs all claim they love their veggies, so please hold them to that- hehe! They were able to tell us that apples, peaches, grapes and strawberries are fruit, and potatoes, carrots and broccoli are veggies … Such clever Bugs! We spoke about what “healthy food options” are, and they know that these do not include sweeties and chips and choccies … although they didn’t really agree with that!

As a fun exercise this week, we used snack and lunch times as a learning opportunity by asking the Bugs the Bugs to show us their muscles and do a few exercises to show us how much energy they had. We then told them that their muscles weren’t “big enough” and that they didn’t have enough energy, and that they had to eat their protein and carbohydrates to make them bigger and faster. They gobbled up their food so fast and one at a time, came to show us how “big” their muscles had grown and how much faster they were.

All our children are very well mannered, but we spent even more time this week re-enforcing good manners – saying please and thank you at meal times and when playing with friends, and to also not interrupt our friends or adults. This is a big one at this age as they have learnt to talk, but are still learning that they can’t talk ALL. THE. TIME. (Haha!) We are sure you’ve noticed! Hehe!

For art this week, we made talking sticks. We went on a hunt for big sticks, painted them and added glitter, and then had some help adding pipe cleaners, ribbons and feathers to our sticks. Native American tribes used these sticks during meetings, so that everyone would get a fair and equal chance to voice their opinions without being interrupted. We used these to take turns talking during ring time, and although this is a difficult concept, we feel like the Bugs did a great job!

Just a few general notes/rules.

  • Please cut nails – Scratch accidents can happen so quickly!
  • Please remember to label everything, especially jackets, tracksuit tops and long sleeve tops that are needed in the chilly mornings but tend to be ditched at playtime. Even socks and shoes!

Thank you for another fun and interesting week. Your children are all well-adjusted to their new classroom, their new friends and their teachers. We are in full swing of things now and a lovely, calm dynamic has taken over our days in class – we are having such fun learning and getting to know your children even better. It is a privilege to watch them grow up!

This week we learnt about Healthy Eating, Etiquette, and Manners.

We started the week off with a theme discussion about healthy and unhealthy food. We spoke about what is good for our bodies and what is not.

We encouraged and helped the children to remember our magic words which are please, thank you and excuse me. We gave them examples of these actions and we continue to remind them about their manners every day and how important good manners are to have.

The Hoppers got up to some balancing on the tires at FunFit Sports this week with Coach Trevor and some “shot put” throwing as we are getting ready for our Sports Day. Coach Trevor loves our kids so much and the Hoppers excitement on their faces when they see coach it tells me they love him just as much.

During the week we worked on more fine motor skills and number recognition with a fun counting activity. Our Hoppers had to trace over a number five with paint and then count out five bottle lids to paste next to our number five. This activity encouraged counting to number five as well as number recognition of number 5.

Our children also created an exciting piece of art this week all about fruit, but we have decided to keep it and only show it off at our art show.

It was a jammed packed short week, and we had lots of fun!!

Next week our theme is: Safety

One of the cutest things to hear is a child spontaneously thanking you or saying please for something. It makes our little teacher hearts so proud!

We are so impressed with the lovely manners our Pups have! This week was all about healthy eating, manners and etiquette. We used mealtimes as a chance to discuss things like staying seated, no feet on the table, no playing with food and using a spoon or a fork… We encouraged our children to use lovely manners and always say please and thank you!

We played with different food toys and discussed what each of them are and the colour. The Pups are so smart!

We had a lot of fun with our art activity this week. We made our own salad bowl using shredded paper, we also discussed all the vegetables that are added in the salad. Needless to say, this was an eventful and fun activity.

We also started working on some Art Expo pieces this week, that will be kept a secret, and you will be able to see them later this year. They absolutely loved it!

We hope all our Pups that were sick this week feels better, and we can’t wait to see you all next week!

This week was jam packed with fun-filled activities about eating healthy, having etiquette and manners. We are so proud of the Squad because they were all polite this week and really stepped up to the plate.

Writing and Phonics: Phonics this week focused on our next three letters (J,K,L) which the children traced and then wrote them independently. We are pleased to see that they are getting the hang of using the ‘cat method’ and although this is a difficult one – they are using the method nicely.

We also added a new sight word, ‘here’. Please continue practicing letter sounds and the sight words ‘look’, ‘at’, ‘me’, and ‘in’.

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week focused on 2D and 3D shape recognition. The Squad were asked to correctly distinguish between a group of shapes – which one is a 2D and which one is a 3D shape and then sort them into the correct side of the table. We also had a dot-to-dot worksheet for fun.

Life Skills: This week we looked at introducing the principle: Thinkers. These types of students are learners who go into detail about all the finer things in life. They can be seen ‘in their head or daydreaming’.

Art: We had so much fun this week, we tapped into our fine motor skills by threading strips of paper under and over to form our place mats which we used for our cooking activity.

Cooking & Music: This week’s cooking lesson was so much fun. The Squad made their very own fruit kebabs which assisted with their fine motor skills and then they had to follow different patterns such as ‘kiwi, kiwi, mango, paw-paw, kiwi, peach, plum’. They did well with this. We also set up a restaurant style lunch where the teachers were the servers and we even played restaurant music – thank you teacher Hayley. During this lunch we practiced table manners and etiquette.

For music we looked at different instruments and the sounds that they make. Next week we will be learning a new song.

It has been a great week.

See you all next week.

This week in the Curious Crew class we focused a lot on healthy eating , we spoke about what we consider healthy food , and we took a good look at the food pyramid too. We covered every food group and spoke out what each food group does for our bodies.

We also spoke about good manners and good table manners , each child had a turn to say what they thought was bad table manners and good table manners.

Each day we focused on our counting and our phonic letter recognition too.

For art this week , we used magazines and each child had to find different food for their very own food pyramid, the class enjoyed being able to flip through magazines cutting out their favourite foods.

This is what happened in our Yoga this week :

Curious Crew Yoga 🤗

Today was Yoga Dice day! Shaking the magic box and seeing what 2 poses we had to do and for how many seconds we had to hold it was very exciting 😀

We started the week off with a theme discussion about healthy and unhealthy food.  We spoke about what is good for our bodies and what is not. We discussed where each food item belonged; whether they are healthy or unhealthy, sweets, veg and fruit.

We encouraged and helped the children work on their patience and sharing responsibilities, as well as working together as a team.  It is also a great way to reinforce our moral conscience theme of not interrupting and having manners, always say please and thank you.

The Hoppers got up to some swinging on the monkey bars at FunFit Sports this week! Coach Dave was there to assist at any given moment but also encouraged the Hoppers to try do it on their own using their strong arms and upper body strength. Coach was extremely proud of how brave the Hoppers were!

During the week we worked on more fine motor skills and number recognition with a fun counting carrots activity. Our Hoppers had to paste carrots onto paper that were numbered in order and then stick thin green strips of paper onto each carrot, this activity encouraged counting to number four as well as number recognition 1 -4.

Our children also created pineapple and watermelon people. They painted their fruit and we stuck on their eyes. For their arms and legs we worked on more fine motor skills by folding encyclopaedia paper back and forth to create bendy legs and arms which were stapled on afterwards. These came out so cute and we have decided to keep them for art expo. 😊 It has been a great week of learning.

We had a lot of fun with our art activity this week. We made an orange foot print of the Pups feet to turn it into a carrot. Needless to say this was an eventful and fun activity. Some of the Pups loved the feeling of their feet being painted as others found it sensitive. We had great fun with this activity and the Pups thought it was so much fun running with paint all over the floor. This was not the plan but as it goes with such small kiddies the mess is always so much fun for them.

For FunFit sport this week, Coach Dave gave a lesson on balancing. He gave each Pup a chance to balance on the tires. Although this seemed a bit scary at first, they all became very confident. Great job Pups.

Yoga is becoming easier with the Pups now as they are becoming familiar with teacher Nicole – They did general stretching and poses to warm up their bodies. They blew the magic windmill using deep inhale and exhale breath, also known as our balloon breath. They ended off with their butterfly song.

Please take special note of our upcoming events at school:

  • Flip flop day on the 17th February
  • Valentine’s day disco on 14th February

The children are all settled now and are familiar with our daily routine already. It is amazing how much and how fast they can learn.

This week the children learnt about the food pyramid and the importance of eating different vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, sugars and proteins. The Crew filled in their very own food pyramid by sifting through wonderful magazine food images. They snipped out their favourite ones and stuck them onto their triangles. They had so much fun cutting and sticking! We also explained that the bottom of the pyramid is what we need to eat the most of and as it moves up, what we need to eat less of. So right at the very top the children know they are only allowed a little bit of sugar and sweets … only on weekends!

The Crew each did a ‘still life’ painting where they had to paint their version of the fruit bowl we placed in front of them. They absolutely loved this activity and it was awesome to see how they all saw it in a different way.

We had many chats in ring time all about healthy eating and manners. We had fun learning our orange and rectangle poem.

In Heart Matters teacher Hela taught us about the importance of breath and using it when we feel angry, scared or frustrated. The children were each given a butterfly which they had to try and breathe with on their lips. It was very cute to see.

The Crew are getting a lot more confident during Show and Tell and I think the boys and girls love to show their friends what they bring each week. We really encourage them to bring something every week as this promotes feeling apart of the lessons.

Tuesday evening is our Parents Info Evening. We hope to see everyone there.

This week we learnt about healthy eating, etiquette and manners. In the Hopper class we did many fun activities to reinforce the theme of the week and build our skills.

Here’s what we got up to this week;

We started the week off with a theme discussion about healthy and unhealthy food.  We spoke about what is good for our bodies and what is not. We discussed where each food item belonged; whether they are healthy or unhealthy.

We encouraged and helped the children work on their patience and sharing responsibilities, as well as working together as a team.  It is also a great way to reinforce our moral conscience theme of not interrupting and having manners, and to always say please and thank you.

Throughout the week we worked on some progressive artworks.

Our first piece focused on our number of the week and the letter ‘f’ for ‘fruit’ and ‘five’. The Hoppers started off by stamping their pineapple body, then they stamped a green handprint for the leaves. They also coloured in five circles and played a number recognition activity before gluing them in the correct order on their five printed fingers!

Our children also created the most adorable ‘f’ for ‘fish’ artworks! This activity also focused on our shape: rectangle, and our colour: orange. Our kiddies used rectangle sponges to stamp red and yellow, which they learnt created the colour orange. Mixing colours is always so much fun! To wrap it all up, they added some fins, a head, tail and of course, googly eyes!

Our final piece of art was a group effort. We created a ‘Healthy Foods Rainbow’. We started by looking for all different kinds of healthy foods and categorized them according to colour. The children then all had a helping hand in painting our rainbow and got to stick on the pictures according to the rainbow colours. Teamwork makes the dream work!!

Please remember Midterm Break! Friday 25th February and Monday 28th February, there will be no school on these two days.

Well done boys and girls!

We are so pleased to say …
