Ll – Love

This week we spread the love with our theme of “My Emotions”, especially with it being Valentine’s Day on Tuesday. We started the week of love off by reinforcing our shape and colour of the week. To show how much we love our parents we created a paper-weight love rock, our Hoppers chose a pebble and made two thumbprints to look like a heart.

Our children had a great week speaking about love and why we love our mommy’s, daddy’s, our families, and friends. We also spoke about our feelings and the different emotions we may feel from time to time. We coloured in happy, sad, and angry faces, which we made mood charts, these came out amazing and we encourage you to please use them at home, hang them up somewhere and let your Hoppers show you how they are feeling, this is a great way for children to express their feelings.

On Tuesday we celebrated Valentine’s Day with Valentine’s disco. Our Hoppers had so much fun dancing and it was a great way to get rid of some energy due to all the rain we have had over the last few days.

Our Hoppers had so much fun making Valentine’s Day cards, we used resistance art, the Hoppers called it “Magic Painting”. We drew with a white wax crayon on a white piece of paper and the Hoppers used watercolour paint to paint over it, and this is when the magic happened!

Music was so much fun this week, we have started to practice some concert songs…how exciting… We can’t wait for this special day.

Happy Hoppers Yoga Day, We celebrated Valentine’s day by singing 🎶 and dancing along to our “Boom-a-chika-boom Valentine’s Song” we spelled out VALENTINE by doing yoga poses for each letter and ended off with a Valentine’s version of Baby Shark before listening to dolphin sounds for quiet time

The weather pushed us inside for FunFit Sports but definitely did not put a damper on our session! The Happy Hoppers showed off their jumping skills by playing some hopscotch and had to complete different movements when jumping from one hula hoop to the next. Well done, Hoppers!

It has been a great week filled with lots of love and happiness.

Next week our theme is Safety.

Have a safe and lovely weekend.

After two weeks of rain, the sun came out just in time for this theme. The sun was shining and love was in the air!  We love this theme and the children have been so excited for our much-awaited disco on the deck. We had a lot of fun making our Valentine’s Day art and had an absolute blast at the disco with our guest DJ.

Writing and Phonics:  This week we recapped our 3 letters from last week and then introduced the next three letters for the week. We introduced J,K and L. We spoke about objects that begin with those letters; we sang our phonics song and used left over clay to form these letters. We also played a game – blue vs red team, to see who could identify the letters and their sounds. We love the Squad’s enthusiasm to learn! For our handwriting lesson we did some finger warm up activities and then went over the correct formation of those letters on our white boards. Once the children had grasped the concept of the correct formation, we moved onto our writing books where the children traced those three letters using our writing cats.

Maths: During our maths lesson we recapped our numbers 1 – 20 and did a counting activity where the children had to point and count out objects up to 20. We then did a 20-block frame worksheet with paint and an ear bud. Each 20 frame had a number given above. The children had to count carefully and use the ear buds to place a dot of paint in each block based on the number that was given.

Art & Life Skills: We spoke about our emotions and the different types of emotions we can experience in a day. Emotions change constantly and we have to find the things that fill our love tanks and make us happy. Having said that, we also spoke about how each emotion we feel is valid.
For our Valentine’s Day art piece, we made love key rings. Each child was given clay and had to make our shape of the week using the clay. Once their hearts were dry they used their fine motor skills to thread beads onto gut. We attached the beads onto the heart and added a key ring. We also made a Valentine’s Day card. The children first coloured in and cut out an outline of an owl. They then traced over the words “Hoo loves you? Owl always love you” and traced over their hands to use as the wings for the owl.  The children worked very hard on their Valentine’s Day art and we are sure you are going to you love it!

It has been a great week.

See you all next week.

Ah what a wonderful week we had learning about our emotions, love and Valentine’s Day. We had a very busy week as we had a student teacher (teacher Carla) visiting us. The children loved her and she had some lovely activities planned.

We started learning about all the kinds of emotions one can experience. The children had to search the classroom for hidden little faces that expressed each emotion. We read the story “Inside Out” which is a great lesson on emotions. The children were all tasked with making their own ‘emoji’ face. They had all kinds of expressions to choose from to make up their own unique feeling. While some were working on this, others were working on a “Brain Gym”. This activity really challenged them but we were very impressed with how they managed.

We started working on our Valentine’s Day art and crafts. A tricky task that they were given was to cut out little hearts to add to their Valentine’s Day card. This really challenged their fine motor and coordination skills. We are sure you are going to love their efforts 😊

Heart Matters was another great reinforcement on the importance of emotions this week. They learnt about the feeling of being scared and had to colour in particular things that scared them.

Cooking was a hit this week where they made eggs in toast with a heart shape cut out. They loved this fun activity with Chef Buso.

We continued to challenge the Crew this week by starting with our ‘class jobs’. Each child will be given the chance to have a little class job. They all love this and can’t wait to have a turn to be line leader, snack/lunch helper and plant waterer.

Have a wonderful weekend all!

The Crew can Cruise!

The Crew kiddies sure can move!

It was so cute to watch the boys and girls dancing away and enjoying the music at our Valentine’s Disco!

This week we spread love with our theme of “My Emotions” and especially with it being Valentine’s Day on Monday. We started the week of love off with reinforcing our letter ‘L’. The Hoppers turned their letter into a Ladybug. First they glued their ‘l’ onto their page, then they added wings, eyes, feelers and glass stones for their dots!

Our children had a great week speaking about love and why we love our mommies, our daddies, our families and our friends. We also spoke about our feelings and the different emotions we may feel from time to time. For our ‘feelings activity’ we made ‘a bunch of feelings’, where the children coloured in different emotion faces and glued them together to create grapes. They added a stick for the stalk and a paper leaf.

To incorporate our emotions, during Ring Time we discussed our Calm Corner and the purpose it serves. We also spoke about the ‘Feelings Jar’ which is filled up with glitter and squishy balls and goes hand-in-hand with our Calm Corner.

Little ones often have a hard time handling their emotions.  They feel everything so strongly, from love to frustration.  When it’s the latter, calming down can be a challenge, and for some kids common techniques like ‘time outs’ just don’t work all the time.  The children can shake up the ‘Feelings Jar’ (an action that will help work out the feeling of frustration), and then watch the glitter and squishy balls swirl and slowly sink – it’s a mesmerizing distraction.  Once the glitter is all settled their calming time is over, if they still don’t feel ready to re-enter society they can shake and watch for as many rounds as they need.

For our Valentine’s Day art, our kiddies created the most adorable picture frames to stick on your fridge! They decorated their ice cream stick frames with buttons and magnets!

For Cooking on Friday, they Hoppers had such a helping hand in making Mixed Berry Pies!! Some Hoppers helped with rolling out the pastry, some helped in cutting the pastry into sections, others helped with scooping the berry mixture onto the pies, some helped with using the heart shaped cookie cutter and others helped with forking the edges! They had such a blast in making these treats! We hope that all Mommies and Daddies can have a little taste before it gets gobbled up by your munchkin!

Of course, we had to make a Valentine’s card for our lovely parents! This was done by making the most beautiful tree on the front cover. Our Hoppers used bark and cinnamon sticks for the tree trunks and gorgeous leaves from outside.

Today we celebrated our annual Valentines disco. I’m sure you can just imagine the amount of excitement that was floating about! Rest assured, we had a ball!!!

Next week our theme is: Healthy Eating, Etiquette and Manners.

Have a safe and lovely weekend!

This is always a very anticipated theme and it’s always very well received. All of the children, from the smallest Pups all the way up to our Smart Squad, have so much fun with this theme and the teachers love all of the enthusiasm!

Our week was spent full of fun activities and discussions. It is amazing how much these young children know about their emotions. They are such sensitive, intuitive and “connected” little humans! We discussed an array of emotions from Anger to Happiness. We had loads of fun practicing the facial expressions that go with these various emotions and had a good little giggle at some of their “sad” and “angry” faces – too cute when they are “putting it on”! We also used all of the emoji faces (that are so familiar to children these days) and played all sorts of awesome matching games – we would put them on the carpet and then ask the children to find the “loving face” or the “bored face” etc… They were really very good at this!

The excitement of this whole week was building to Friday and Valentine’s Day, the day of Love, the day we get to have a disco at school! It was so beautiful to see how the children really embraced this. Thank you for all of the sweet spoils we got! Our highlights were definitely watching how the children love each other, giving sweet little gifts and plenty of love and hugs! Our Valentine’s boogey on the deck was so much fun and the children really made us proud with their awesome dance moves. We have some natural Casanovas and some incredible dancers in this class!

For art this week, we concentrated on making a special Valentine’s Day card for mommy and daddy. We used our fine motor skills to tear up little pieces of red, white and pink paper, which we then stuck into a heart. We stuck little puzzle pieces around this and stuck a very cute note inside.

As a Valentine’s gift, we made beautiful flower bouquets. The Bugs painted paper green, then helped us fold them into a fan shape. We painted egg cartons and cut these into little flowers to stick onto the bouquet.

Our moral conscience theme this week was “Love Tanks” – rather an obscure concept for our little people to understand all about keeping your love tank full to share with other people, by being kind and loving to yourself. We explained that giving love makes that person have extra love to give, it’s always a good idea to hug, give kisses and cuddles, and make people feel valued and cared for. They most certainly understood this!

Just a few more points to remember:

  • Please remember to cut nails on a weekly basis
  • Please do not send toys from home with your child to school. We now how tempting it is when you can avoid a fight or tears by letting them bring their favourite toy to school, but they cause problems in class when other children want to play with these new toys and we have to take them away. We love encouraging children to share but when it is their toy and they have a strong sense of ownership over it, we can’t really expect them to share it, and then if it breaks, we really don’t want to have that situation happening.
  • Please send children to school in suitable footwear for sport on FunFit Sport days. Please also put shorts on under any dresses – important!
  • Please label everything folks! Even just initials on the bottom of shoes and inside hoodies and tracksuit tops. We have had a few items mysteriously vanish and we can’t do anything if it’s not labelled!
  • Please remember “no juice allowed”. Juice encourages sharing of bottles and therefore, germs. We try our best to keep our kiddies germ free and this is very difficult if there is yummy juice that everyone wants to taste.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and all things CHOCOLATE, we decided to check who has been reading the blog with a secret question. This week, the question is: Are you a Ferrero Rocher kind of person, or are you on Team Lindor Ball? Please post just your answer on the WhatsApp group with no other explanation, so we know that you have read our blog! Haha! Teacher Gemma is Team Lindor ball, and Teacher Thandi is firmly on the Ferrero Rocher side of the fence, but at the end of the day…. CHOCOLATE IS CHOCOLATE!

Ll – Love

The Playful Pups had such a wonderful and exciting week, especially with Valentine’s Day approaching us! We spoke about the importance of listening to each other as we all have some good days and some bad days, and the way that we feel is called emotions. We discussed that different situations can make you feel a particular emotion (e.g. happy, sad, angry, jealous etc). Emotions can help tell us when something needs to change. The teachers acted out some basic emotions for the Pups like anger, sadness, happiness, and most importantly this week LOVE! It was so cute to see how these little faces watched us change our emotions. The Pups were very intrigued and the expressions on their faces were priceless. We also asked them to show us their happy faces and their sad faces.

We all loved singing our favourite Barney song “I love you”. The Pups expressed how they love their friends by giving each other hugs. It’s amazing to see that love comes so easily and naturally for these little people.

We danced a lot this week to all different action songs. I found the Pups thoroughly enjoyed this activity. I think at this age it’s a great way for them to express themselves.

We made a Valentine’s Day hat from a paper plate with a big heart on the front of it and sprayed it red and pink to represent love and Valentine’s Day. This was great fun and some of the Pups wore their hats at break time which looked so sweet! The teachers made the children some popcorn so they could pack it into their Valentine’s Day packets that they painted all by themselves. Some of the popcorn was packed into the bags but as expected the Pups were sneaking some at the same time!

We ended this week on a huge high as we celebrated Valentine’s Day at break with a special treat with a DJ playing music for us. Wow! Isn’t it so great to be part of such a thoughtful and caring school!

We wish you all a very happy and restful weekend.

Next week’s theme is: Healthy Eating, Etiquette and Manners.

Paint paint everywhere!

We also made a banner for Valentine’s Day and printed red, pink and white hands all over it.

I don’t know who got the most paint all over themselves – the kids or the teachers!
