Writing and Phonics: The Squad worked hard on remembering their two new sight words for the week “dog, cat”.  For handwriting we traced the letters “v, w, x, y, z” and then wrote them independently. Our sight words to date are: “a, am, look, at, me, in, here, can, I, dog, cat” – Please continue to practice these at home.

Mathematics: This week we completed subtraction sums up to 10, the Squad grasped this very well and we are so proud of them! The Squad then completed a dot-to-dot worksheet where they had to join the numbers in the correct order to form the picture. We also continued to practice counting 1-30 and backwards from 30 as well as count in 2’s and 5’s. Lastly we had a worksheet where the children bounced in two’s and connected the dots to count in 2’s.

Creative Art: The squad made their very own dogs and cats by cutting out the bodies, heads, ears, paws, mouth, eyes, and tail. They were super impressed by the result.

Music and Cooking: On Tuesday for cooking the squad made dog treats using flour, salt, stock cubes, water and food colouring. They mixed, measured, and used cookie cutters. They thoroughly enjoyed this.

For music the Squad learnt about different types off music genres and how you can determine the difference by listening to the instruments, styles, and rhythm.

Afrikaans: For afrikaans this week the Squad completed a colour wheel where they had to colour in certain days of the week such as “gister was dit” “vandag is” and “môre is dit”.

Moral Conscious: For our moral conscious theme ‘principles” focusing on the IB Principles, we explained to the squad that honesty is the best policy and that we must respect our friends and act with a strong sense of fairness and integrity as well as they must take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

FunFit Sports: Coach Dave did a run through with the Squad for the sports day on the 25th of March, everyone did an amazing job and are very excited.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend and see you all next week Wednesday.

This week in the Curious Crew class , we enjoyed our daily theme discussions , we spoke about different kind of animals we get that we can keep as pets , and we also took the time to discuss the different needs that these pets have , we spoke about how snakes , lizard and spiders need a tank/cage and how a fish would need a fish tank etc.

We focused quite a lot on our number letter and colour of the week too , practicing rhymes and counting everyday. We took the time and practiced counting and stopping at number 9 , the class was very determined to get this right.

For Art this week , we made a very cute little origami art puppy to add to our , and original Art piece using cereal boxes homes we made last week. 🐶

This week we tried something new , and boy oh boy did the class impress us with their writing skills. So each child had the option on which word they wanted to write, they could either choose a word using our letter of the week , or they could choose a pet eg; Pink or Cat , and they had to copy the word onto their piece of paper using the correct letter formation. They did so so well. And they loved the challenge !!

Another fun activity we did was based on visual perception, the class was given a paper with overlapping images and they had to only colour in the cat and the bunny. This helps with foreground and background skills.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week coach Dave was focusing on our sports day preparation; we went through every single station that will be set up on the day , and we went through what will be done on our fun sports day !!!!

HEART MATTERS

This week our heart matters lesson was very cute and original, teacher Hela used two toilet rolls to demonstrate how we feel when we’re in our red zone and in our green zone of emotions. And we then practiced ways on how to get from our red zone to our green zone. The class absolutely LOVED decorating their toilet rolls , we had some beautiful art pieces. Thank you teacher Hela for the wonderful activities on this !

Overall it was a wonderful week filled with so much laughter , fun and adventures !

Please remember that next week is a 3 day week. Stay safe and see everyone on Wednesday.

Next weeks theme is : Occupations

What an exciting week we had with all sorts of pets visiting us at school!

Thank you to the parents who brought their pets to school for us to see. From big to small we loved them all. The Hoppers really enjoyed speaking about their pets and enjoyed learning more about how to care for our pets and the different kinds of pets we get, from shells and scales to fluff and spikes

  • Brylee brought her pet bearded dragon Skinny.
  • Daniella brought her dog, Hugo.
  • Theju brought her fish
  • Courtney brought her grandads dog, Talula.
  • Talyn brought his two doggies Benny and Bobby.

Our Hoppers were SO excited to say hello to all our fluffy, spikey and scaly friends!

To start off our week, our kiddies had a fun free drawing session. We asked them to draw their pet. Please ask your Hopper which of their pets they drew, it may just look like scribbles to the adult eye, but there is always so much meaning and a story behind them! Free drawing is perfect for sparking the imagination!

We incorporated our colour of the week black and our number of the week “10” and letter of the week by creating a “Pp” for Pets and Puppy. We started this activity by colouring in some ears, a tail and a mouth and nose. Next the Hoppers coloured in the letter “p” and then sponge painted 9 black spots onto their “P”. The final step was to compose our pup together! This activity is just one example of how we include fine motor skills, critical thinking and spatial perception, into our fun class time.

Our other pet art piece we made adorable pet parrots, we painted paper towel rolls/ toliet rolls brown for the branch. Our Hoppers then coloured in a picture of a parrot, they all did an amazing job and coloured them in beautifully. We added some feathers and stuck our parrots to the branches and added some ribon to make the braches hang. These are very cute pet parrots.

For cooking we made delicious dog biscuits out of only 2 ingredients – wholewheat flour and sweet potato baby purity! These treats have been tested on our school doggies, and we can confirm that they are a big hit!!

Our music lesson this week was all about our sports day next week, we have been practicing some fun war cries to sing on the day… We can not wait for this fun day!!!

It has been a great week.

Our theme next week is: Occupations and people who help us. If any parents would like to come and give our Happy Hoppers a “work talk”, please arrange with your teachers.

Woof-woof! Meow! Tweet-tweet! These are just a few of the sounds that could be heard throughout our classroom this week! The Bugs absolutely loved this theme and had so much fun telling us all about what pets they have and what their names are.

There are so many different types of pets, most are considered “normal”, and others… not so much!

We spent this week discussing the different types of pets, what they eat, what toys they like to play with and the different names they can have. We can tell by how these Bugs talk about their pets, that they love them very much!

We had so many gorgeous pets come to visit us this week:

Wednesday: Georgia brought her doggie, Nonsense

Thursday: Ella brought her cockatoo, Milly

Friday: Rourke brought his hamster and tenrec

Our art this week is getting added to our collaborative art piece from the past 3 weeks, and will only be available for display at Art Expo!

For cooking this week, we made adorable treats for our pets at home. Please note, these are not for hoomans!

To make these delicious treats we used:

2 cups of flour

2 jars of sweet potato purity

Mix it all together, roll it out and cut out your biscuits.

We hope your fur babies love these!

We hope you all have a lovely long weekend, and we will see you all back next week Wednesday!

Woof-woof! Meow! Sssss! Tweet! These are the sounds we heard this entire week. It has been so much fun this week seeing all the pets that came in through these school gates! There were so many wonderful animals visiting us. The children had such fun seeing and touching them!

We played a game where we showed the Pups pictures and asked them which pet was their favourite?

We had fun talking about all the different pets you can have and what pets the Pups have at home! Some of them definitely know the names of their beloved pets – too adorable! It is lovely to chat to the children about these everyday things and see how they learn. We spoke about looking after and feeding your pet and making sure they are always happy and safe.

During our art activity we explored some messy play. We made some salt dough and created some adorable little pets which we will be keeping for out art show. Two little hands experiencing all the dough between their hands and fingers. Some pf the Pups loved this experience but others didn’t seem so sure about this squishing and squashing the salt dough. All we did, as the teachers, was encourage the Pups to play and enjoy this experience. We eventually helped the Pups create some salt dough pets. So cute!! We also did some marble paint rolling for art which the Pups also thoroughly enjoyed! What another wonderful week of learning, singing, dancing, and playing!

Please remember to label everything and send a change of clothes to school with your child (please start including a long sleeve top and long pants, and a warmer jacket, as the weather can turn so quickly) and please remember to trim nails this weekend.

Next week Monday is a school holiday and Tuesday is a Public holiday so it will be a 3 day week.

Have a stunning weekend, keep safe and see you next week!

  • Kelaiah brought her dog, Gin.
  • Erin A brought her dog, Rocky.
  • William brought his dog, Cheeky.
  • Aimee brought her fennec fox, Turbo.
  • Teacher Alexia brought Piper, the Hedgehog.

Our Hoppers were SO excited to say hello to all our fluffy, spikey and scaly friends!

After our kiddies were introduced to Piper the Hedgehog, we decided to create our own hedgehogs! The kiddies made them out of salt dough and pasta. These creations were so cute and unique, we will be keeping them for Art Expo!

We incorporated our letter of the week by creating a “Pp” for Pets and Puppy. We started this activity by colouring in some ears, a tail and a mouth and nose. Next the Hoppers finger painted a fluffy texture onto their “P”. The final step was to put our pup together! This activity is just one example of how we include fine motor skills, critical thinking and spatial perception, into our fun class time.

For cooking we made delicious dog biscuits out of flour, mealie meal, eggs, oil, chicken stock and herbs! These treats have been tested on our school doggies, and we can confirm that they are a big hit!!

To package our treats we made adorable “doggy bags”!

It has been a great week.

This was truly a busy week filled with so many different visitors. Thank you to all of the families that brought their wonderful pets to school for the Squad to have a look at and play with. They truly had so much fun and could not stop talking about them all week! We loved hearing about all the different types of pets that we get, big and small.

Writing and Phonics: We finalised the alphabet this week by learning about Yy and Zz. On Monday, we introduced the phonics part of this where we played games that consisted of finding the letter, and saying words that start with the letter, also those words that rhyme with the letter. Letter formation is very important and should be implemented at a young age so that by the time that they are in Grade 1 they are able to write independently. We ask that you can practice this at home, ask your child to write their name and then see how they are forming their letters. If you need any assistance, we have an open-door policy and can provide extra worksheets.

Maths: Counting is an essential part of Grade R and we have been really working on counting to bigger numbers as the weeks go on. This week we focused on counting to 20, counting backwards from 20, counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10s. The Squad are getting there and are always so excited to learn new things.  We had a fun worksheet for the children to complete, it was a connect the dots and colouring based worksheet. The boys and girls created such colourful fish!

Life Skills: Courage! When asked what courage means, the Squad had some weird and wonderful ideas. However, when we mentioned that it means that we are brave enough to try new things that might scare us, they knew exactly what it means to brave. We truly do have such brave Smart Squaders! Some of them overcame their fears this week with seeing different pets – spiders, bunnies, and dogs. Well done, Squad!

Art: We completed two sets of art pieces this week, one of which was a still life drawing of their pets. We printed out a picture of their pet and then the children had to draw the picture to the best of their ability. They did so well. Our next art piece was a dog or cat creation. The Squad had to use their cutting and pasting skills to create their very own ‘class pet’. These came out so beautifully that we have decided to keep them for the Art Expo. We also added an interesting experiment to the books this week, the ‘rainbow rain’ experiment. We will continue to do more experiments as the weeks go on.

Sight Words: look, at, me, in, here, on, she, he, the, it, is, I

It has been a lovely week, see you all on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!

This week was a jam-packed week with lots of fun activities! We took the Crew outside into the fresh air and drew our shape, letter and number of the week with chalk. We did some perceptual exercises and practiced drawing our shapes. We did some cutting out along lines and extended this to cutting out diamonds which the Crew stuck onto a snake – and we found out that even some children have a snake as a pet!

Everyone loved telling us about their pets at home and it was so exciting when some of the children brought their cute pets to show all of us! Seeing their excitement and pride for their animals was so sweet! We read some lovely stories this week, all about pets and courage and our letter of the week P. Thank you to Ariana for bringing some great books for us to read!

We made cute origami puppy faces that the children folded all by themselves – we are so proud of them! We continued to work on fine motor and pencil grip with various exercises. This is so important and we encourage you to keep working on this at home too 😊

We made a dog/cat tag for an imaginary pet that the children each had to name. We loved some of the names that they came up with, their sense of humor and imaginations are so awesome! We then threaded them onto collars that we made which turned out to be so cute! We might just keep these for art expo too 😉

We started training for our Sports Day at FunFit Sports which was so much fun! We can’t wait to see how the Crew perform on the day!

During Cooking we made biscuits for doggies! So please give them to your dogs if you have any. Thank you to those who brought their pets to show this week. The children really did love it!
