“We use our hands to feel, we use our hands to feel. Rough, smooth, soft and hard, we use our hands to feel!”

We have had such a fun week! We asked the Bugs lots of questions about their senses, and which parts of the body is used for our different senses. Our eyes to see, noses to smell, hands to feel, mouths to taste and ears to hear. We also did lots of singing – singing in soft voices, loud voices, deep voices and squeaky voices – putting our Auditory (hearing) sense to use.

We engaged our Tactile (touch) sense by feeling our texture boards. We also explored our Gustatory (taste) sense, which happens to be The Busy Bugs teachers’ favorite activity throughout the entire year, by doing a taste exercise using a mild coffee mix for bitter, syrup for sweet, salt for salty and our favorite – citric acid for sour. We did feel a little bad after making these Bugs taste citric acid… so we gave them a little treat afterwards, a yummy sweet! We just love watching the different reactions and facial expressions caused by the tastes- especially the sour one- and we always end up in fits of laughter!

We explored our Olfactory Sense (smell) by using our smelling jars. Some of the Bugs were a little reluctant to get their noses too close, but for the most part, everyone had fun!

Friday, we explored our Auditory senses some more by playing with musical instruments, banging drums, shaking bells, knocking sticks together and listening to the different sounds from the piano.

Our art piece for this week is a surprise and will be kept safe and sound until our Art Expo!

So, as you can see, we had a very busy and exciting week and look forward to many, many more with your awesome Bugs!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you all next week.

Next week’s theme: Health and Hygiene

Please could we ask everyone to send your child’s toothbrush and toothpaste, clearly labelled, in a Ziploc bag by Friday. We will be brushing our teeth after snack on Friday as a fun activity!

Moral conscious theme: Treating our Friends with Care – we spoke about how important it is to treat others with the kind and respect that we would like to receive. We also taught them that our words can be hurtful. We need to use kind words to fill our friendship love tanks.

Writing and Phonics: We went over our “D, E, F” letters, this included the Squad writing the letters with marks first and then writing the letters in their books. They have been getting used to using the ‘cat method’ – some letters are small; some are tall and some fall.

Mathematics: For maths we counted to 30 and in 5s. We were pleased to know that the Squad are able to recognise the numbers 0-10. We practiced writing the numbers and also discussed the properties of a square, they pressed different items (square-shaped) into paint. Well done, Squad!

Creative Art: This week we focused on our five senses – what we can see, touch, hear, smell and taste. We created a senses booklet where the children used those different elements to stick in spices, cut out from magazines, drew a picture and more. We know you are going to love this art piece!

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor played cricket with the squad this week and they absolutely adored this – we were blown away with their skills.

Music: Teacher Katy visited the Squad on Wednesday, and they practiced their vowel and 3D shapes song whilst she played the piano which assisted with time keeping. Keep it up Squad!

We have had an amazing week in the Curious Crew class! We have been super busy this week with some awesome creative activities. Where to even start?

During ringtime discussions this week, we first went over our five senses. Which the Crew knew quite well! Then we went into detail about the people who don’t have their sight and people who don’t have their hearing. We spoke about what a person without sight is called, blind and how they get around, using a stick which they tap the ground with. Blind people also have guide dogs which help them get around. We asked the children how blind people can read and taught them that they read by dots on a page with their fingertips. If you are in the shops pick up any product in a glass bottle, at the bottom around the edge you will feel little dots, this is brail. Let them feel it.

We also spoke about people who can’t hear and what they are called, Deaf. People who can’t hear have a special way for speaking to each other. Sign language! We learnt a few words in sign language, bathroom, drink and thirsty. The Crew have had to show in sign language if they want more and if they are finished. Please ask your little ones at home, to show you the sign language they have learnt. Here are the links to the videos we watched, they are amazing and simple.

Basic signs Part 1: American Sign Language for kids

Basic signs Part 2: ASL signs!

Music and movement: This week we went over clapping beats 1 beat, 2 beats, 1 and 2 beats, 3 beats. We then sang and marched to the Ants go marching one-by-one and played musical status

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor is just the best! He has such a playful way of guiding the children with activities he has set up. This week he focused on balance, walking over the tyres and practiced throwing skills with the Crew. Not just any throwing skills but Shot Put to start preparing the kids for Sports in the months ahead.

Mind Ninja: This week the Crew identified the emotion sad and that it’s also ok to be sad. Sometimes we need a few minutes to feel all the sadness before we can carry on. Even though we don’t want our children to be sad, it is very important that when they are feeling sad that it is validated and they are allowed the time to feel it fully and then they can ‘Turn their frown upside down’. If you found a little picture in their bags like this ‘: ) :’ this was the concept taught.

For art this week in the Curious Crew class, we did our names in braille! Once everyone had completed the art activity, we waited for the glue to dry, they then had to close their eyes and feel what their Name felt like in braille. They were very Curious about this activity, doing well following the instructions.

Thinking tricks: Please try some of these fun games at home with your Crew eg. putting on a movie but switching off the screen and having them only listen to the sound, seeing if they can guess which movie is on. Or sing a few songs, where here and there you say the wrong word and see if they notice… This is just so much fun and we love to see their reactions, it will make you laugh!!! At the same time, working on those very important listening skills. Let us know if there are any that you come up with, that will be fun in class to do too.

Another action-packed week full of busy amazing activities in our Hopper classroom. Our Happy Hoppers had a fun week learning and an engaging week in the classroom discussing our five senses.

Throughout the week we worked on a progressive art piece where the kids created a “Five Senses” puppet. We started with a discussion about each of our five senses and the purpose they serve.

After that we painted our handprints. And then colored in our eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. We then painted our paper plates which was fun and messy. At the end of the week, we put our puppets together. Oh boy was this so much fun. The kiddies chose where they wanted to stick their facial features. They had so much fun making these puppets and loved telling Teacher Cecilia and Teacher Katy that the eyes are to see beautiful things sometimes not so beautiful things to see and experiences. Our sense of sight, the nose for the sense of smell, ears for the sense of hearing, the mouth for the sense of taste and the hands for the sense of touch! We just love it when our Hoppers can tell us all about what they are learning about during Ring Time!

We still have some shy little people, but this will surely improve with time. They experienced a fun activity where they got to taste all sorts of different tastes. The expressions on our Hopper faces were so funny and  cute!

YAY YAY YOGA DAYis always so much fun with Teacher Nicole our Hoppers just loves her so much.

Our theme next week is: Health and Hygiene.

What a wonderful week we have had exploring our senses! We discussed all our different senses and how important they are to us.

We asked questions like: When you wake up in the morning what are the first things you can See? Hear? Smell? Touch? Taste?

For our art activities we printed a handprint and pasted different objects that you can touch. We also made a noise rattle that they can shake to hear different sounds. We used this shaker to shake while we sang some of our favourite songs on Friday.

Our Pups also got to smell and touch a mint leaf on Monday morning, some of them wanted to eat the leaf, that’s how refreshing the leaf was. He-he!

The Pups enjoyed making their shaker as it helps with fine motor activities as well!. This was a very enjoyable free activity which the kiddies seemed to love.

Yoga class was a big hit again this week, and we only saw smiles the whole time.  We can’t wait to see our beautiful pups next week.

We asked questions like: When you wake up in the morning what are the first things you can See? Hear? Smell? Touch? Taste?

For our art activities we printed with a small wooden block all over our page with yellow paint. We used a block to represent our shape of the week and yellow paint to learn about the colour yellow. After that I gave the Pups a cut out hand print to stick different textures on wood/hard – cotton wool/soft – sandpaper/rough – and ribbon/smooth. This activity was all about touch. The Pups also made a paper plate shaker out of a small paper plate. We folded it in half, put some bottle caps inside it and stapled it together. We used this shaker to shake while we sang some of our favourite songs on Friday.

The Pups had so much fun finger painting as a group this week. This was a very enjoyable free activity which the kiddies seemed to love. We also painted a huge box which had different material inside like bubble wrap and polystyrene for the Pups to play with. This activity tied into our theme our senses so well. Cool objects to explore.

Yoga class was a big hit again this week. We had our music demo on Wednesday and the pups loves it so much. As you can see these little Pups have been working super hard but more importantly having lots of fun. We cant wait to se our beautiful pups next week.

Have a wonderful weekend !!

Friday, we explored our Auditory senses some more by playing with musical instruments, banging drums, shaking bells, knocking sticks together and listening to the different sounds from the piano.

For our art piece, the Bugs painted a toilet roll yellow (the colour of the week), stuck different textured fabrics around it to touch. Filled it with dried rice to make a noise, added an essential oil soaked cotton wool ball inside for smell and a yummy sweet treat to taste. We hope your Bugs have the best time playing with their sensory shakers!

So, as you can see, we had a very busy and exciting week and look forward to many, many more with your awesome Bugs!

Another week of ACTION packed activities in our Hopper classroom has flown by. Our Happy Hoppers had a fun week learning and engaging in classroom discussions about our 5 senses.

To start off our week, we began on a worksheet for the letter of the week “B”. We turned the letter ‘b” into a bumblebee! First, the children coloured the letter yellow, which is our colour for the week. They then finger-painted black stripes on and sponge-painted the head. Once that had dried, we added wings, feelers and googly eyes. Safe to say they came out absolutely adorable!

Throughout the week we worked on a progressive art piece where we created a “Five Senses” puppet. We started with a discussion about each of our five senses and the purpose they serve. Following that we coloured in our eyes, nose, ears and mouth. We then painted our paper plates and stamped our handprints. At the end of the week we, put our puppets together. The kiddies chose where they wanted to stick their facial features, hands, and hair. They had so much fun making these puppets and loved telling their teachers that the eyes are for the sense of sight, the nose for the sense of smell, ears for the sense of hearing, the mouth for the sense of taste and the hands for the sense of touch! We just love it when our Hoppers can tell us all about what they are learning about during Ring Time!

For our number and shape this week, we did square painting with counting blocks and painted a number two. The Hoppers also had to put their fine motor skills to the test and trace over the number two. Well done, Hoppers!

For cooking this week, our Hoppers did a little taste test exercise where they had to guess what they were tasting. We tried to use some quirky flavours to make it fun and it sure was super fun to see the silly faces that they pulled! They tasted: Choc chip cookies, corn chips, vinegar and cocoa.

 YAY YAY YOGA DAY

After doing our yoga sequences and warm-ups, we played “Hot Yoga Mats” the same concept as the Floor is Lava but they have to move from the lava mat to the floor when they hear the word freeze, then listen, then demonstrate the yoga pose being called out. This game is good for listening to instructions.

To end the week, we explored our sense of touch with a bucket filled with jelly slime. While feeling around in the bucket, they spoke about what it felt like, what it smelt like and what it looked like. Some of the kiddies liked this sensory activity and others were not keen on feeling the slime!

It has been a fun busy week, and we are so proud to that all the Hoppers have settled so nicely into their new class and with their new teachers.

Here is the YouTube link that we used so that your kiddies can show you what they’ve learnt. https://youtu.be/fnFWAzd3Kfw

For Art this week, we used little sequence beads to write our names in braille, the class absolutely loved learning about braille and did so well in completing this activity.

Show and Tell went over very well and we were very proud of all the kiddie’s little presentations that they did for us! Well done Clever Crew, you have impressed us with how well you speak in front of the class as well as remembering all the details of your Show and Tell.

What a lovely theme, the children are always so fascinated by all of the different ways that we can heighten our senses. This week was jam packed with activities and getting into the swing of things for the new year.

Writing and Phonics: Phonics this week focused on our next three letters (D,E,F) which the children traced and then wrote them independently. We are pleased to see that they are getting the hang of using the ‘cat method’ and although this is a difficult one – they are using the method nicely. This can be practiced easily at home by using scrap paper.

We also added a new sight word, ‘at’. Please continue practicing letter sounds and the sight word ‘look’.

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week focused on number formation and properties of a square. The Squad had to distinguish between four different squares and place them from biggest to smallest. They dipped them in paint and ordered them. Afterwards we discussed how many sides a square has, it’s corners and how many straws it would take to build a 3D square – cube.

Life Skills: This week we looked at introducing the principle: Inquirers. These types of students are learners who seek information and ask many questions.

Art: We had so much fun this week, getting our senses tingling. We made a booklet which was completed throughout the week using our five senses. The Squad cut out magazine pictures which tackled the ‘taste’ sense, they also drew beautiful pictures which focused on their ‘sight’ sense. We went to the art studio and the Squad could pick their favourite textures to stick on their ‘touch’ sense. For ‘smell’ the children stuck in different smelling spices and the last sense ‘hearing’ the Squad threaded different beads and formed their own jingling earring.

Cooking & Music: This week’s cooking was so much fun, we had a blindfolded tasting session where the children had to guess by smelling, touching, and feeling the different foods. They giggled so much at their friends and enjoyed this activity so much. We used the following: lemon, garlic, onion, cocoa powder, sugar, vinegar, honey and more. For our music lesson, the children learned about rhythm and how to keep a beat by clapping to the different patterns and splitting words up into syllables.

It has been a great week.

See you all next week.
