IB Principle: Communicators – This week the Squad practiced effective communication skills. Letting the speaker, speak and the listener, listen. We identified these as the sender and the receiver. They had fun sitting in pairs acting out different role plays.

Writing and Phonics: We have been finalising our correct letter formation, it is very important for the Squad to write the letters in the correct way so that when we start writing words next term, they are better equipped. We encourage all children to continue to work on this during the holidays because practice makes perfect.

Mathematics: This week the Squad went over basic addition concepts using different ways such as counting on, using abacus, using their fingers, and aurally subtracting and adding. This is in preparation for next term when we start to assess them for their mid-term reports. We encourage all children to practice number recognition 1-20 over the holidays so that they are better able to spot the number and correctly add or subtract.

Creative Art: For art this week we completed a “what will I be when I grow up?” worksheet which will be kept for the Book of Me. We also made chef hats so that the Squad has a hat for cooking classes. We also had a free ‘messy’ play where they were allowed to use different equipment and art forms in order to express themselves.

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor had set out a ten-pin bowling course using Eco Bricks so that the Squad could knock down the pins using tennis balls. They had so much fun with this.

Music: Teacher Katy went over the correct tone to use when expressing different emotions. Which translated into practicing our poem for the concert.

We wish you a lovely April holiday/break, we will see you once we return 7 May.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

What a busy week it’s been in our Crew Classroom. There was no slowing down in our class as we end the last week of school. We continued with assessments this week and did some really cool art pieces for this weeks theme.

Last week we went over the first 3 letters of our Jolly Phonics ‘s’ ‘a’ ‘t’. This week we focused on the next 3 letters ‘p’ ‘i’ ‘n’. In our first week back we will recap all of these letters in fun and concrete ways.

The Crew also completed a perceptual worksheet, where they had to colour in, cut out and paste back together like a puzzle. This was the first time the Crew did an activity like this and they truly impressed, teacher hearts are happy!

For art this week the girls had their own salons, doing nails and hair. It was so cute to see them paint nails and cut or plait hair. The hair cutting was just too cute and we have to keep it for art expo.

The boys made their own little police ID badges and a paper mashe moon. The moon was also too gorgeous not to keep for art expo!

Cooking this week was just too cute and the Crew loved their apple and jam treats. Our cooking theme was for a dentist and they made a little mouth out of apple wedges and strawberry jam gums and mini marshmallow teeth. The jam was just a hit the Crew were all licking their plates.

As we end the term we also are saying goodbye to 2 wonderful little pupils. Emma and Aiden you are going to be so missed! We wish you all the best on your new adventures and we hope that you love for learning will continue to grow. Sending lots of love.

What a way to end off a successful first term! Great work Curious Crew, we hope that you have an amazing break and enjoy the holidays. Before you know it we will be back for a fun filled second term with more learning and adventures!

We have had so much fun this week learning about occupations and people who help us. Doctors, dentists, hairdressers, firefighters, police officers and so many more. We got to see what each job involves and what they offer, and on Thursday, we got to see the kiddos dressed up as their dream job. We had everything from a ballet dancer to a firefighter, nurses, doctors, superheroes, and construction workers. They looked amazing!

We have been so busy this week with developing our fine motor skills, practising lots of cutting and colouring in.

Cooking was easy this week as we just made some popcorn which we enjoyed while watching a clip about different occupations.

We can’t believe this is our last week of Term 1 already. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday, and we will see you all in Term 2.

PLEASE remember to label ALL your child’s belongings even their shoes. There are still many unmarked items being sent to school and when all the kids are on the playground and items are not marked it makes it difficult to find their way back home at times.

“The real question about life should be “who do you want to be?” when you grow up, not what? Faith is the blueprint of our dreams, action is the builder.”

It is such a treat to be able to hear and listen to children’s plans for the future… they always have the most open minds and innocent thoughts and ideas and when you listen close enough, they may just alter the way you think about and process life and its decisions.

And this is exactly what we did this week.  We sat down to ask our Bugs who and what they wanted to be when they grow up, and the answers we got were priceless!  From Pilots to Princesses, Vets to Teachers, Firemen to Policemen, and Mommies and Daddies. We discussed EVERYTHING!!  From what the different occupations do during the day, to what they wear to work, the different protection needed for different jobs and how they help our everyday lives.

Thursday dress-up day was so much fun! Thank you for dressing so beautifully Bugs!  You little people are such a huge inspiration to your teachers and we can’t wait to see how your future turns out and what you really grow up to be.

For art this week, we let the Bugs choose between 4 different hats, that are associated with 4 different jobs; Doctor/nurse, Fireman, Policeman, and Chef. The Bugs got to colour in the hat of their choice and then us teachers stapled them to a piece of board to wear as a hat.

We hope our Bugs have a wonderful holiday! To those that are joining us for Holiday Club, see you soon. For everyone who is traveling, please travel safely.

Our secret question this week is: What did you want to be when you were a kid, and is it similar to what you do now?

Have a safe and happy holiday!

What a fantastic week of fun and learning about all the awesome people who help us! From doctors and dentists to hairdressers, firefighters, and police officers, we’ve been on a super cool adventure exploring different jobs and what they do to make our world better.

Even though the weather was a bit chilly this week, we still made the best out of our last week of school. We enjoyed our time in class by singing and dancing and playing inside a big tent that we found in the container, we also went on a little nature walk, exploring the fresh air and looking at all the beautiful flowers growing because of the rain!

We’ve been busy having a blast while also working on our hand skills. With a little help from our awesome teachers, we’ve been threading, matching colours, and getting active with Funfit sports. Doing these activities not only makes us happy but also helps our little hands get stronger and better at doing stuff.

For our art project, we made adorable police badges! And guess what? We even learned how police officers use their badges to tell us to stop. It was so much fun! We loved getting creative and imagining ourselves as part of the police team.

See you all in the second Term!

This week in the Curious Crew class , we enjoyed our daily theme discussions , with it being a short 3 day week , our theme discussions were full of detail. We spoke about the different occupations you get , the favourites were , firemen , policemen and even astronauts, the class loved discussing what each job enquired , and everyone was so excited to dress up and show us what they wanted to be when they were older.

It was so cute and amazing seeing everyone all dressed up on Friday , the creativity was outstanding, the class looked amazing.!! Everyone enjoyed telling their friends about their chosen career choice , it was a super fun show and tell this week.

For Art this week , we did a cute worksheet , where the class had to draw what they wanted to be when they’re older , and tell us why they’ve chosen that. The answers were amazing and super interesting.

 FUNFIT SPORTS

This week for sports , we did a practice run of our sports day , so we were filled with enthusiasm , and team spirit !! We ran through all of our obstacles and games and we practiced our war cries too !! The class has been super excited for our sports day !!!

Let’s hope the team spirit continues !!

We are so looking forward to spending our sports day together ! Building up team spirit and cheering our friends on like the crew we are !!!!

Writing and Phonics: This week we had a short but eventful week, we went over all of our sight words to date. We also went over the beginning sound concept (what letter the child could hear at the beginning of a word). We also went over our capital letters and wrote them independently.

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week was focused on addition to 10 and the bigger – smaller concept. The Squad had to colour in the side that had more vs which one had less – they did so well with this. Lastly we went over number name recognition.

Life Skills: “Thinkers”- we went over the different thinkers that we have had in History such as Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein. We discussed how they pushed the boundaries and asked questions others wouldn’t.

Art: We completed a colouring in worksheet this week for Art we also played a very fun game called Charades but incorporated it into the theme of the week. The kids had to act out different occupations, such as soccer player or teacher etc.

Afrikaans: For Afrikaans this week went over the days of the week, counting and colours.

Cooking & Music: For cooking this week, we went over the different cooking utensils and what they are used for. For music this week we have been practicing concert songs and war-cries.

Science & Experiments – Week 12: 27 – 31 March 2023

Writing and phonics: We introduced two brand new sight words this week – ‘it’ and ‘is’. Some of the Squad become a little confused between the two sounds but they are getting there. We also went over beginning sounds and practiced letter formation/sounds. We completed a vowel worksheet which was quite tricky, but the Squad did well with it – they had to choose the correct vowel to place within a word such as ‘pig’ or ‘van’. Please continue to practice the vowel song and ask them to write the vowels for you.

Maths: For mathematics this week we had a cut and paste worksheet which involved filling in the number line. We also practiced cutting as straight as can be on the lines so that our cutting skills can improve. We were pleased with how far they have come since the beginning of the year.

Life Skills: “Thinkers”- we went over how science relates well to being a thinker. In order to be a scientist and complete experiments we need to think outside of the box.

Art: For Art this week we completed a states of matter piece where the children watched a clip and then we spoke about the elements/particles and then they stuck down their own matter to explain evaporation, condensation, melting and freezing.

Afrikaans: This week was a recap week which was focused on colours, numbers, body parts, and animals. Keep it up.

Cooking & Music: For cooking this week, we completed several different experiments which required us to think about asking the question (hypothesis) and then following through with the experiment. We learned about surface tension and different forms of matter. For music we have been practicing our concert songs.

It has been a great two weeks.

Next Week’s Theme:

Science and Experiments

This is such a fun theme! The children love watching all the teachers run around, crazy professor style, making things fizz, bubble, melt, explode, glitter and whizz! We love it – it gives us a chance to be kids again too! What an EPIC WEEK!

This week we covered a few basic experiments, that the Bugs absolutely loved being a part of!

  • Magic flowers – kitchen paper roll and koki pen flowers, sprayed with water. We watched how the ink ran and mixed with the water to make beautiful bunches of flowers.
  • Invisible ink – we drew on paper with paintbrushes and lemon juice and then watched our drawings come to life when teacher heated the “ink” up with a flame – a great way to leave secret messages or make a treasure hunt!
  • Walking Rainbow- We used 6 cups, 3 with blue, yellow and red food colouring inside spaced with an empty cup between them. We then folded paper towel pieces into strips and bridged them between the cups with coloured water in, and then empty ones. The Bugs loved watching the water “walk” up and over the paper towel into the empty cup, and mix with the next colour along to make a whole new colour. Red and yellow merged to make orange, and yellow and blue merged to make green!
  • Sink and float – we explored which items would float and which ones would sink, and explained the concepts of heavy and light to the children.
  • Volcano – Teacher Gemma showed us how a volcano erupts using the volcano she made when she was at school. This Volcano erupts REAL fire! The Busy Bugs absolutely loved this!
  • Teacher Monette and Gemma also did a very funny experiment for the Bugs, that involved “moving water” from Teacher Gemma’s mouth, through a willing volunteer, and out of Teacher Monette’s mouth. If this isn’t making sense at all, don’t stress, we will send the video of the experiment. Hehe! The Bugs were absolutely speechless and had rather confused looks on their faces when we were done!

This is a wonderful theme, and opens up the minds and imaginations of the children so much. There are so many, very easy and cost effective science experiments to do with children at home and it really sparks their life long interests in the sciences! See if you can do some experiments with your children this weekend or over the holidays.

This week’s secret question: Who is your favourite science geek on “The Big Bang Theory” – Leonard, Raj, Howard or Sheldon?

We have been so busy this week with developing our fine motor skills like threading, puzzles and playing with playdough. These activities are highly recommended for our Pups to do even at home. The more these little hands do the faster and more developed these skills with improve.

Our art activity this week we choose to make a police car which the Pups had lots of fun painting and I helped them with the finishing touches.

Can you believe there is only one and a half weeks of term 1 left! How the time has flown by!!

PLEASE remember to label ALL your child’s belongings even their shoes. There are still many unmarked items being sent to school and when all the kids are on the playground and items are not marked it makes it difficult to find there way back home at times.

 Next week’s theme: Science Experiments

Science and Experiments:

For a new theme, it was by far one of the favorites! We introduced the Science and Experiments theme to try and get our kiddies more involved in science, and they loved it! There was excitement from day one and we were constantly asked “when are we going to do that one?”

For our first experiment, did the crazy comb and water. The science is that the atoms in your hair have more electrons, which are negatively charged, than protons, which are positively charged. The electrons build in the hair due to friction. Did you know? Forensic scientist sometimes examine combs to solve mysteries! Hair samples, which contain DNA, often serve as useful evidence when determining if a person was at a crime scene.

Second experiment was called Holy Hair. Rubbing one substance against another substance causes a buildup of electrons. The wall is a neutral until it comes into contact with a charged substance like a balloon. Its electrons are repelled by the negatively charged balloon, making it positively charged – causing the balloon to stick.

Our big experiment was our volcano.

We tried a few other small experiments which we sent on the Pups WhatsApp group.

We hope you have a lovely weekend. See you all on Monday and remember next week is our last week of Term 1 and it’s a 4 day week.

We started off this short week with an exciting theme: Occupations and people who help us. We spoke about what the word occupation means as well as what different types of occupations there are. We also spoke about occupations where people help us and the way in which they help us. We spoke about what we would like to be when we grow up and the reasons why we would like to have that specific occupation. We also discussed who the essential workers are during the pandemic. We discussed which people were essential workers and why their jobs are so important.

Writing and Phonics: This week we recapped on all the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. We played a phonics game where the children had to pick an object from a box and identify the beginning sound of the object. The children then had to place the object on the correct letter. They then completed a beginning sound worksheet where they had to identify the beginning sound of the picture and colour in the correct corresponding letters. We practiced writing the capital letters of the alphabet in our books and on a worksheet. We are very proud of how beautiful the Squad’s letter formation is progressing.

Mathematics: This week we recapped on the sequence of numbers and identified which number comes next. We introduced simple subtraction using concrete objects and went over our letter identification. We also practiced counting in 2,s 5,s and 10,s.

Life Skills: Moral conscious theme: “Being a hero.” We spoke about the meaning of being a young hero and ways in which we could all be “hero’s” in our day to day lives. Being a hero doesn’t only mean we fight “bad guys”. A hero is also kind, thoughtful and helpful.

Creative Art: We started off by completing a “what I’d like to be when I grow up” worksheet. The children had to write what they would like to be when they grow up and then drew a detailed picture about their chosen career. They really went into detail with this activity and we were so impressed! Their pictures came out amazing! We also did a fire fighter progressive art piece that turned out so lovely and we will be keeping it for the art expo.

It has been a great week.

Sight words: look, at, me, in, here, it, is, I, she, he, play, on, in, the.

See you all next week.

Next week’s theme: Construction.
