Rr – Recycling

IB Principle: Open Minded – We explained to the Squad that being open-minded means being curious about different ideas, cultures, and perspectives. It’s about being willing to listen, learn, and explore new things without judging them too quickly. Open-minded people are like explorers, always discovering and growing!

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on the “ab” family and wrote sentences in their workbooks using the cat method. We are so pleased with how well they are progressing with their handwriting, focusing on finger spacing and placing the letters in the correct part of the “cat”. They also decoded words using sound buttons in their TimetoRead books. Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week in math, the children worked on a fun worksheet where they used visual boxes to help solve equations. For example, when they saw 6 + ? = 10, they counted the remaining boxes to find the missing number, which was 4. It was great to see them using this hands-on approach to develop their math skills! We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards, as well as in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Keep it up Squad!

Creative Art: This week in art, the kids had a blast creating their own phones using recycled materials. It was adorable to see them chatting away on their handmade “phones” – they really got into character! This activity encouraged their creativity and imagination, and it was lovely to see them having so much fun.

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our annual concert – the children are singing their hearts out. Keep it up.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Rr – Recycling

We just couldn’t be more proud of the Curious Crew! During each ring-time discussion, every child had something thoughtful to contribute about saving the world and throwing rubbish away responsibly. They really understand the value of recycling and are enthusiastic about making new things out of old materials. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! It’s easy to do!

This week’s theme was all about going green for our world. We introduced the Crew to the three R’s:

Reduce – using less

Reuse – using it again or for something new

Recycle – turning waste into something brand new

Although it was a short week, we kept ourselves very busy. The Crew completed a lovely tangram colouring activity of a turtle, and we’ve noticed a real improvement in their fine motor skills. Their colouring has become much neater, and they’re using such a vibrant variety of colours—true little artists in the making!

For art, we tore up green magazine pages and used the pieces to decorate a recycling symbol. The Crew then coloured the words “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” to complete the piece. It was a simple but effective way to reinforce our message while building fine motor strength.

We also made beautiful crowns out of toilet rolls and decorated with beads and glitter. This activity helped the children understand how even simple, everyday items can be transformed into something creative and fun. These crowns are real showstoppers and will be kept for our annual art expo.

Taking our tearing skills one step further, we created world art pieces by making a torn paper background and painting the Earth using watercolours. The results were gorgeous and truly expressive.

The Crew also worked on number identification and rote counting. They’re progressing beautifully, and many of them are confidently counting into the 30s—such a wonderful achievement!

We went on a walk to visit the school’s recycling bins and spoke about how our school participates in recycling. This was followed by a nature walk, where the children were encouraged to notice and appreciate the beauty of the world around them—trees, flowers, insects, animals, and all the treasures nature has to offer. They had a wonderful time!

CURIOUS CREW YOGA 🧘‍♀

Starting with our warm up stretches, we twisted left & right and stretches up and over.

Our song was the “Dancing Bear”, in this exercise we did a variety of poses

*chair, boat, tree, bear, table, reverse table and Warrior

Our quiet time included Rainbow Relaxation Visualisation

Our Letter Challenge continues, and it has been such a joy marking and commenting on the Crew’s efforts. Thank you, parents, for the wonderful support. This week, the letters j, k, and l will be going home in your child’s Letter Challenge book.

Next week will be our final week of school before our week-long mid-term break. Don’t forget parents your child’s first report for the year will be sent home on 27 June. How exciting!

Rr – Recycling

This week was all about recycling. This is a huge favourite for our EcoKids as this is what we are all about. Looking after our world is so important. We spoke about what it means to recycle. This isn’t an easy concept for our Hoppers to understand but we are sure they got the just of it by the end of the week. I couldn’t be prouder of the Happy Hoppers, in every ring discussion everyone had something to add about saving the world and throwing away rubbish! They understand the importance of recycling and really enjoy making things to reuse.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! It’s easy to do!

We spoke about the three R’s

Reduce – cutting back on the amount of rubbish we make.

Reuse – Finding a new way to use rubbish so we don’t have to throw it away.

Recycle – Making something new out of rubbish.

We sang lots of recycling songs and they definitely know the words REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.

We also practiced counting the number of recycled items in the bin and creating a simple graph. The children are really grasping the concept of more and less, and their number recognition is coming along beautifully.

Our art activity was a huge hit we used cereal boxes to make a shape person. I pre-cut the shapes for the Hoppers, and they pasted it onto their paper. We had so much fun completing this activity.

Teacher C, Portia and Thandeka took the Hoppers on a lovely nature walk to collect all sorts of sticks and pinecones but mostly to check if our school is clean and pick up paper. We also went to look at our lovely recycling station.

This has been such a busy week with our concert practise happening and finalizing assessments.

“Stamp, Stamp Clap! (X4)

We love animals, plants and birds! We love snails and slugs!

Large and small, we love them all! And we never ever step on bugs!

Because… we’re the children of Ecokids

We love nature, the sun and the trees! The rain that helps plants grow!

Paper, Plastic, Glass and tin our recycling rules we know!

Because… we’re the children of Ecokids”

What you have just read is our school song. It is such a fun song to sing and really shows everything that we as a school stand for.

What an informative and exciting week we have had! We learned all about recycling and the different materials we use to recycle. We got to feel glass bottles, plastic, paper and tin and see different variations of products made from these materials. Bags, bottles, lids and plugs made from plastic. Toilet paper, toilet rolls and the books we read made from paper. Bottles, windows, bowls made of glass and formula tins, food tins, coldrink cans and the container where all this cool stuff is kept made from tin/metal.

We played a super fun recycling game, where the Bugs got to choose a piece of “rubbish” from a pile, and sort it into the correct recycling bins of our gorgeous recycling station.

Art this week was slightly challenging as most of our art we send home is recycled art. So we thought, what could be better for recycled art then… recyclable material sculptures!!! We used all bits and bobs that have been sent in by students and parents over the years to create these amazing sculptures. The Bugs got to select from a large quantity of recyclable materials that we had poked holes in, and thread them onto a stick stuck on a Purity bottle lid base. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see these beautiful creations just yet… You’re going to have to wait for Art Expo!

We also decorated our beautiful envelopes that our reports will be going home in next week!

Our favorite songs for the week was “Reduce, reuse, recycle”

“Reduce, reuse, recycle, recycle, recycle.

Reduce, reuse, recycle, it’s easy to do.

‘Cos your trash and my trash make up way too much trash.

Reduce, reuse, recycle, it’s easy to do!”

Please keep in mind the beautiful words of Dr. Seuss.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to change, it’s not.”

We hope you have a lovely weekend and stay warm!

Recycling Week with the Playful Pups 🐶

This week, we explored one of our favorite themes at school – recycling! 💚

We had such meaningful discussions about what happens when we throw paper away and how important it is to take care of our environment. The Pups even got to practise throwing rubbish into the correct bins, and they did such a great job! 👏

🎨 Art Time:

For our craft this week, we created our very own *recycling tins* that will be sent home for you to use! Each one was made using wax crayons and wax paper wrapped around a tin — they turned out beautifully and we’re so proud of them! 🖍

🏃 FunFit Sports:

We completed our FunFit Sports assessments this week so everything is ready for the reports going out next Friday. The Pups have shown such wonderful progress!

Report Envelopes:

We also spent some time decorating our *super cute report envelopes* — you’re going to love them! 💌

🧘Yoga with the Pups:

In yoga this week, we began with some warm-ups: stretching up high, twisting our bodies, and touching our toes.

Our yoga song of the week was “1, 2, 3, 4” as we practised fun animal-inspired poses like Star, 🐸 Frog, 🐍 Snake, 🐶 Dog, 🐱 Cat, 🐛 Caterpillar, and 🦋 Butterfly.

We ended with some peaceful quiet time to help us wind down and relax. 🌈🧘

Moral conscious theme: IB Principle- Risk Takers- We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker means trying new things or doing something even if you’re not sure how it will turn out. We explained this in a simple relatable way, such as when you try riding a bike without training wheels for the first time, or when you stand up in front of class to talk about something you care about. It’s about being brave and not being afraid to learn from mistakes or explore new ideas.

Writing and Phonics: This week, we concentrated on words from the “ag” family and practiced breaking down letter sounds to create word families. The Squad then completed a worksheet where they matched words with the correct pictures by sounding out the letters. The children are understanding word families effectively, and we’re very pleased as teachers. Additionally, we introduced two new sight words, “to” and “do”. We encourage you to continue practicing these sight words at home, especially during the upcoming mid-term break.

Mathematics: For mathematics this week, we worked on addition problems up to 10 using the number line and practiced counting forward and backward to 30. We also concentrated on counting in 2’s up to 10. We’re delighted to share that they are mastering this skill correctly, so we encourage you to ask them at home—you’ll be amazed and proud of their progress!

Creative Art: The Squad made their own “monsters” making use of recycled materials in the Art Studio. This art activity was fantastic for demonstrating to the Squad how recycled materials can be transformed into almost anything. They were chuffed with their unique creations. We have also been working on Art pieces for the Concert and Art Expo, we cannot wait for you to see!

As our Art activity for the week we made a little game using recycled material. The Crew painted their boards of cut out cereal boxes and we drew noughts and crosses on bottle caps to make the game tick tac toe. We hope you enough a few games at home with your upcycled little game.

The Crew practiced some number formation in reusable books and we played a fun number hunt game. The Crews counting is coming along so well and we are going into the 30’s now with our rote counting!! This is just super.

The Crew got started on some Art Expo Art. Wow and it’s looking amazing but top secret.

Our Letter Challenge is well under way and it has been such a pleasure marking and commenting on your child’s lovely work. Keep up the great work Crew and Parents.

We went on a lovely nature walk to collect all sorts of sticks and pinecones but mostly to check if our school is clean and pick up papers.

Rr – Recycling

What an exciting and important theme this is for all of us at EcoKids Preschool! This is what we’re all about! This is who we are! We had a wonderful and informative week, learning all about recycling and reusing instead of just throwing things away.

This week, we learned that there are four main types of recyclables: paper, plastic, glass, and tins. We also discovered that a lot of rubbish that isn’t recycled ends up in the oceans, hurting sea creatures and polluting the water!

We even had a practical activity where the Pups threw papers in the dustbin and cleaned their hands afterwards to make sure they were germ-free. The Pups did such a fantastic job!

For art this week, the Pups and teachers teamed up. We sprinkled grated wax crayon on wax paper, then cut out old plastic bags that said RECYCLE and placed them in the middle of the wax paper with the wax crayons. Teacher Tebeth then used an iron to melt the wax paper, creating a stunning mix of colours. We wrapped the colourful creations around formula tins, turning them into upcycled “dustbins” for your bread plastics and bread tags. Once you and your Pup fill the tin, please bring it to school so we can use them for our nappy-changing stations for the little ones – we are always REDUCING, REUSING, AND RECYCLING!

We also worked hard on our Art Expo projects, making them as exciting as possible. The Pups absolutely loved painting and sticking different objects!

Another wonderful event this week was welcoming two more Pups to our class. We are so happy to have them join our EcoKids family!

Rr- Recycling

This week , we really took the time to explain our theme thoroughly in our morning theme discussions, we spoke about the importance of Recycling , we also discussed what materials can be recycled and how they get divided into 4 different bins  we also sang our recycling song too. we also in our morning rings , counted , went over our colour of the week , number and shape too.

We practiced our concert songs and dances , and boy everyone is doing it so well.

For art this week , we did a very cute “Reduce , Reuse , Recycle colouring in work sheet. And this came out so cute as everyone tried their best to colour in so so well

We also did a crossing midline worksheet as well as a counting and cutting worksheet.

FUNFIT SPORTS
This week we had a super busy and funfilled lesson with Coach Trevor , this week we had to show coach Trevor just what we made of , we had to climb , skip , kick , hop and so much more !!!

 YOGA :

Curious Crew Yoga:
Today we focused on hand coordination and strengthening by using our wooden stick and rolling it between our hands (making a fire)
This basic exercise reduces feelings of stress and helps improve motor control and aids in motor memory for learning movements involved in fine motor tasks. Using both hands together in a coordinated movement is a skill required for writing and using scissors

In addition, our yogis had to use their core muscles aswell as their upper body strength to grab hold of the wooden stick by using the superman pose. Using their core and upper body, the yogis then had to grab hold of the stick and keep their tummy tight and body straight, and arms and elbows off the ground for 10 seconds. This exercise aids in strengthing the muscles around the spine as well as inner core.

BAKING :

For baking this week , we used recycled cups , and we made worms in dirt , using oreos for the soil and gummy worms for the earth worms , the class loved this idea and were all looking so forward to enjoying their little snack.

FAREWELL TO DAMON

Today we say goodbye to our very special Damon , as him and his family embark on their new adventure in Australia, we wish them the best of luck with the journeys that lay ahead , we pray you have a safe flight and that you and your family get settled soon.

We are going to miss Damon’s cute smile , Dinosaur stories , and cute head of curls , he will always have a special place in the Curious Crew class.*

Overall it was a busy week in the curious crew class.

May everyone have a blessed weekend.

The concert is around the corner, and we are getting ready to sing and dance. We are so excited for you to see your children in their costumes!

Assessments are being finalised over the next two weeks and reports will be going out on the last day of school before the mid-term break. We are pleased with the Squad’s progress, and we are sure that you will be too!

Writing and Phonics: This week was solely focused on letter formation, we have been practicing using the ‘cat-method’ and explaining to the children that we have short letters (a,c,e, etc.), tall letters (b, d, f, etc.) and we have long letters (y, g, j, etc.). They are grasping this well, even though some letters are being written in reverse – this is still age-appropriate and with practice they will be writing correctly in no time! We introduced three new sight words, ‘and’, ‘dad’, and ‘mom’. Ask your little one over the weekend if they can recognise their sight words. We find that sticking some of them all over the house is a great way to introduce incidental learning.

Maths: We learnt about time this week. Wow, these precious children were so excited to learn how to tell the time! We have only started with telling hours and will slowly introduce minutes. They completed a worksheet where they had to write the type by looking at the clock (example, 12:00) and they also had to draw the hands of the clock facing the correct numbers. They are truly growing up so fast!

Afrikaans: We recapped our numbers, greetings, colours, and then we looked at the different fruits. The Squad really enjoy learning Afrikaans and always try to pronounce the words as best as they can.

Life Skills: This was a lovely moral conscious theme because we touched base on taking responsibility for our belongings and actions. We then discussed consequences and what happens when we don’t act responsibly. We ended off with a chat about caring for our world and how important recycling is for us.

Art: The children thoroughly enjoyed their art pieces. They began by writing a little note for mom and dad. Then they stuck some recycled items onto a board and lastly, they stuck a little picture of themselves onto the board. The Squad are proud of their little keepsake.

It has been a great week!

See you all next week.
