Winter is well and truly upon us, which gives us so many opportunities to explore this awesome theme. This week we explored Winter, temperatures, Fire and Ice! A theme of extremes.

We played with a lot of ice and examined what happened when we put the ice into water, placed it in the sunshine, put salt on it… It was so interesting! Obviously our Bugs were not going to pass up an opportunity to put the ice in their mouths, either! Haha!

We had lots of conversations about fire and fire safety, what it is used for and how it’s actually quite dangerous, even though it is so beautiful, and we must always stay far away from fires and anything that can make a fire – like a heater, or matches and lighters!

In winter, our children told us that the weather gets very cold, and that we have to wear long tops and pants, and put on jackets and beanies to keep warm! We use gloves and extra blankets and scarves so that we can keep the cold away! It is fun to drink hot chocolate with marshmallows and eat yummy warm soups! We are all very lucky to have enough warm clothing and a nice warm bed to sleep in at night!

We spoke about how, in Benoni, it really hardly ever snows, although it does happen sometimes. We do get frost on the ground – which according to our Bugs, is because of Jack Frost, hehe! – in the mornings and sometimes, there is fog and mist that we can’t see though! Frost is fun to walk on and goes “crunch crunch crunch!” under our feet!

Friday book character dress-up day was so much fun! These kiddies all looked amazing dressed as their favorite book characters!

Reports have gone out, and we hope you enjoying reading about your kiddos adventures at school. If you have any questions regarding reports, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Have a wonderful, relaxing, mid-term break, and we can’t wait to see all of our Bugs back at school for the second half of the term!

Please remember to send beanies AND sun hats back to school, and label jackets please, as jackets always almost come off after playtime. Have a happy and safe weekend everyone!

The Next Week’s Theme Is: Reptiles

This is such an exciting week – the children love it so much! They know a whole lot about sssssslithery snakes and tortoises, lizards and crocodiles, chameleons and turtles and we have loved having the opportunity to expand their knowledge this week! We have managed to have very long and involved ring time discussions, picking a different animal each day, and discussing it in depth! Reptiles are Teacher Gemma’s favorite thing so she knows more than the average Joe about them! The children learned a lot of new vocabulary like “cold blooded”, “vertebrates” and “camouflage” and had an absolute blast exploring our theme.

For art this week we made an awesome art piece, but unfortunately, you won’t be able to see it yet as they were just so cute, we decided to keep them for art expo!

We have also been hard at work preparing and practicing for our concert. Our Bugs have made us so proud! We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed getting ready for it!

Thank you for a lovely and exciting week! We are looking forward to another jam packed one next week ….

Our question of the week.

Are you a snake person?? A) Absolutely! B) Hell NOPE!

We look forward to your answers…  Hehe!

IB Principle: Communicators – We explained to the Squad the importance of communicating and expressing how they feel by using their words and that they must try their best to listen actively to others. We also explained that they need to make sure they are using the correct tone of voice and think about what they want to say to others before saying it as their words can sometimes hurt others.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad practiced letter sounds and were introduced two new sight words, ‘said’ and ‘has’. They also tackled a fun worksheet activity in their TimeToRead books where they had to unscramble words, sound out the correct word, and then draw a picture.

Mathematics: This week, the squad practiced counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s as well as counted to 30 and back down again. They also refreshed their shape skills and got hands-on with math problems on their whiteboards, mastering some sums. Keep it up smarties!

Creative Art: The Squad got creative and crafted their own awesome crocodiles from recycled materials – we can’t wait for you to check them out at the Art Expo! They also had a blast colouring and cutting out snakes and then drew their favourite reptile. It was a fun-filled activity!

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our annual concert – the children are singing their hearts out. Keep it up.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Welcome back to the second half of the second term. We hope you all had a restful, happy break and are ready for everything the rest of the term has in store.

Do you have green skin? Do you shed the skin you’re in? Can you change colour, too? Turn from green to red to blue. Do you live among the trees, blending in with sticks and leaves? Then you are a chameleon!

It was a super busy week and the Crew did so well. For art, we decided it would be a great idea for the children to make their own reptile booklets. We showed them various pictures of reptiles, and they were instructed to draw an outline in black before colouring in their own versions. The results were beautiful, and we’ll be keeping them for our upcoming Art Expo.

We also created an “L for Lollipop” art piece this week which we know you’ll love. Another hands-on activity took place in the sandpit where the children were asked to copy a picture using only their fingers in the sand, which gave them a fantastic fine motor challenge.

To revise our numbers, we used playdough in a multi-step activity. The children formed numbers out of playdough, traced the number name and digit, added a playdough dot on their chosen number from a group, and finally matched the correct number of playdough balls into a table of blocks. It was a fun and effective way to reinforce number concepts.

During ring-time, we spoke about all the characteristics that make a reptile a reptile. We learned that reptiles are cold-blooded, which means they need the sun to help keep them warm. They lay eggs, have scaly skin, and many can shed their skin as they grow. The Crew were fascinated to learn that some reptiles can even be kept as pets, though they need lots of care and attention to stay healthy.

We also watched a few videos about reptiles to help bring the learning to life. The visuals and facts really helped cement the concepts discussed earlier in the week.

To continue reinforcing our letter learning, we’ve been singing along to Jolly Phonics and focusing on both identifying the letter names and the sounds they make. The Crew are making such great progress with this foundational skill.

Concert practice is progressing very well. The Crew are enthusiastic and determined, and many already know all the words to their songs. We’ve started practicing on stage to get comfortable with our choreography, and the excitement is definitely building. We can’t wait to showcase what we’ve been working on.

Yoga was a highlight again this week. Our session included patting the body from toes to head to stimulate the lymphatic system. We danced and stretched to the song “The Jungle Yoga Freeze” and used fun animal poses like lion, tiger, cat, dog, snake, eagle, and crocodile. We ended off our session with balloon breath and some peaceful quiet time.

Letter Challenge resumes this week with the letters O and P. Please continue practicing at home. Learning letters is so important in helping your child build confidence in both writing and reading.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Reptile Fun for Toddlers: Scales, Tails, and Smiles! 🦎

Theme Discussion this week the Happy Hoppers discussed REPTILES.

Reptiles might seem a little scary at first, but for toddlers, they can be a world of wonder! From turtles to geckos, these scaly creatures are fascinating, colourful, and full of surprises. Let’s dive into the fun world of reptiles—made just right for tiny learners!

 What Is a Reptile?

A reptile is a cold-blooded animal with dry, scaly skin. Most reptiles lay eggs and love to soak up the sun to stay warm. Some of the most common reptiles are:

Turtles 🐢

Lizards 🦎

Snakes 🐍

Crocodiles and Alligators 🐊

Reptile Fun Facts for Little Ones

Turtles carry their homes! Their shells protect them like a built-in backpack.

Lizards can lose their tails if they get scared—and grow them back!

Snakes don’t have legs—but they can slither super fast!

Crocodiles have big smiles full of sharp teeth, but they’re not for cuddles!

The Hoppers enjoyed a reptile dance they had to pretend to slither like a snake or crawl like a turtle.

For our art this week the Hoppers did a little project that consisted of roller painting a cardboard green. They then coloured in a picture of a tortoise. They cut it out with lots of help from Teacher C. They had to fold it to make a 2D tortoise. They then placed it onto the cardboard and pasted some dry grass around their tortoise. This looks super cute and I’m very Happy with my precious little Happy Hoppers. This was a great activity to improve their fine motor skills.

Teacher C also took the Hoppers on a beautiful nature walk and we sat under the big tree at Uncle Ryan’s house and read a story about Reptiles.  They had so much fun walking around throwing some leaves in the air and truly just enjoying our beautiful school.

As you probably know we are in full swing with concert practise and we are looking forward to our big day.

HAPPY HOPPERS YOGA 🧘

Starting with our warm up stretches, we twisted left & right and stretches up and over.

Our song was the “Dancing Bear”, in this exercise we did a variety of poses

*chair, boat, tree, bear, table, reverse table and Warrior

Our quiet time included Rainbow Relaxation Visualisation.

Have a wonderful weekend.

IB Principle: Thinkers: We explained to the Squad that caring means showing kindness and compassion towards others. It’s about being a good friend and thinking about how our actions might affect someone else’s feelings. Just like how you feel happy when someone is nice to you, we want to make others feel happy too! We gave them examples to relate to, such as, sharing toys or books with friends, helping someone who is feeling sad or hurt, being kind to animals and taking care of them and planting trees and taking care of the earth.

Writing and Phonics: This week in phonics, the Squad concentrated on recognizing beginning sounds and syllable segmentation through clapping. They also explored the ‘at’ word family. To reinforce their learning, they completed a worksheet matching words to corresponding images along with writing sentences in their workbooks using these words. Additionally, we introduced two new sight words, ‘go’ and ‘so’, which we encourage you to continue practicing with your child at home.”

Mathematics: In mathematics this week, the Squad focused on counting to 30 and backward as well as practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10. They then tackled a worksheet on tallying, showcasing their understanding of data recording by grouping marks in sets of 5, using vertical lines and a diagonal line to represent 5. We are thrilled with the Squad’s dedication to understanding this tricky concept and their perseverance in applying it accurately. Keep up the fantastic work, Squad!

Creative Art: This week in art, the Squad has been creating an exciting art piece for our upcoming Art Expo in 0ctober, inspired by our theme for the week ‘Reptiles’. They’ve had a blast bringing their ideas to life, and we’re keeping the final masterpiece under wraps until the big reveal at the Art Expo. The Squad is super excited to share their creative work with you – it’s going to be a fantastic showcase!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Welcome back to the second half of the second term! We hope that you all have had a wonderful break and are ready to take on the rest of the term!

Do you have green skin? Do you shed the skin you’re in? Can you change the colour, too? Turn from green to red to blue.

Do you live among the trees? Blending in with sticks and leaves.

Then you are a chameleon!

This was a super busy week for the Crew! Especially when the Reptiles came to visit and we all got to touch and hold weird and wonderful creatures. This show is always interesting and has so much information about the animals. Thank you for another amazing show Julian!

For art this week, we decided it would be a cool idea for the Crew to make their own Reptile booklets. We set out a displayed and instructed the children to draw first in black as the outline and then to colour in the pictures they had drawn. These came out so beautifully and we have decided to keep them for Art Expo.

A few other activities we did this week was a colour by alphabet worksheet, and wow the Crew impressed with how well they know their letters. Super work Crew! We also completed a dot to dot worksheet as well as a little hexagon tortoise. This was a 3 part exercise with different stages. The Crew were shown a picture of different tortoise shells and they had to choice which pattern they wanted to colour theirs. Then they had to cut out the hexagon as well as the tortoises little legs, head and tail. Then stick all the pieces together to form a tortoise.

During our ringtime sessions, we discussed all the facts about what makes a reptile a reptile. They are cold-blooded which means they need the sun to help keep them warm. Reptiles also lay eggs and have scaly skin that can also shed. Most reptiles can be kept as pets and they need lots of care to make sure they live long and healthy lives.

Concert practice is going well and we are getting more and more excited to show off all the hard work we have put into one of the best themed concerts we have!

In music this week Teacher Mo helped us out with concert songs and we went over beats and rhythms. The Crew are separated into 4 groups and on the count of 1 2 3 4 each group has a turn to clap and stamp to their assigned number beat.

For cooking this week, when we had chips and fish finger the Crew got to fry their own chippies, this was also a lesson in safety in the kitchen when working with hot oil by the hot stove. Did you see how well they ate? Food always tastes better when they have prepared it themselves. Great work my Crew!

Letter challenge will resume, please keep practicing though very important letters!

We had an action-packed week, we’re sure the Hoppers must be exhausted from all the fun that was had.

We started off the week revising our letter of the week. We sang and danced to our jolly phonics letters and read our letter land book ,Lucy Lamp Lady. After our story, we went around the class and each Hopper got to tell us a word starting with the letter “L’’. Well done, Hoppers!

For our Art this week the Hoppers coloured in a snake and practiced their cutting skills and cut their snake into a spiral. I am so proud of our Hoppers, they did a fantastic job! This was a fun fine motor skills activity, and the children were incredibly happy with their snakes.

We focused a lot on number recognition 1 to 10. This is very important to be able to achieve this skill before going to Curious Crew next year so please keep practising Hoppers.

The highlight of the week was the reptile show. Julian from Wild Ones showed us his amazing and wonderful animals. The huge tarantula was a hit as well as the snakes.

On Friday for Yoga, we practiced our Reptile Yoga poses. We also focused a lot on spinal twist exercises, which activates the spinal nerves and enhances flexibility and blood circulation.

Concert practice has been in full swing this week; our Hoppers are doing so well. We are so proud of them and cannot wait for the big day! I’m sure most of you already know all our songs, so happy to hear our Hoppers are practicing at home. Keep it up!

Wednesday was by far our most exciting day of the week, as Julian, the snake-man, brought his lovely animas for us to see. There were snakes, lizards, geckos, spiders, gogo’s, frogs and even a chinchilla. Some of the Bugs were “all hands on deck”, and petted every single animal. Others were a little bit weary and chose to rather view from afar.

We have also been hard at work preparing and practicing for our concert. Our Bugs have made us so proud! We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed getting ready for it!

This week was super busy and exciting! Our Pups were thrilled to be back from holiday after the mid-term. They couldn’t wait to reunite with their friends and meet the new friends who started on Monday.

We did lots of fun activities this week. The Pups loved drawing with chalk on the floor, using their imaginations to create pictures. Some drew airplanes, and others drew ice cream—so cute! We also did some colour recognition exercises with Teacher Monette, who called each Pup one by one to show her different colours. They all did amazing!

We went all out practicing our concert songs and dance moves for the upcoming concert. I can’t wait to see all our lovely Pups shine on that day!

For art, we made little geckos using mostly recycled items. We used empty espresso capsules for the gecko’s eyes and ice cream sticks for its legs. The Pups also painted paper plates for the body. It was such a creative and eco-friendly project!

In yoga, we practiced our reptile poses and focused on spinal twist exercises. These exercises activate the spinal nerves and enhance flexibility and blood circulation. Yay for Yoga Day!

We also had a blast with Little Kickers this week, practicing our hand-eye coordination by throwing and catching a ball. The Pups did amazing!

A highlight of the week was the reptile show on Wednesday. The Pups couldn’t believe what they saw! Some of them were very brave and touched the reptiles being shown, while others kept their distance but were still very curious. Seeing their big eyes light up as the snakes and spiders came close was definitely something special.

 Well done, everyone!

Welcome back! We hope the Squad have rested well over this mid-term and we can’t wait for another term of lots of learning and fun!

Moral conscious theme: Words can hurt- Speak nicely.

We explained to the Squad that words hurt more than what they think, they need to think about what they say to friends before saying it as well as think about how they would feel if someone said those words to them. We need to show kindness and care towards our friends and be considerate of their feelings.

Writing and Phonics: This week Squad worked hard on remembering our sight words and received two new sight words for this week “an”, and “we”. The Squad then a dd a worksheet on the “at” family, they had to match the correct words with the pictures followed by tracing each word and writing it independently.

Mathematics: The Squad completed a fun counting worksheet. They counted the amount of beans and then cut out the numbers and stuck them under the correct amount of beans, we are very proud of how they grasped this concept well needing very little assistance!

Creative Art: The Squad decorated their very own snakes using paint by making patterns and then added glitter, they thoroughly enjoyed this art activity.

Music: We have been working very hard on learning and practicing for our concert coming up, the Squad is so excited and can’t wait to show their family an awesome performance!

This week the Curious Crew class had the best time with the theme! We had a great amount of fun during ring time, speaking about our favourite reptiles , and we discussed what  reptiles are , and what makes a reptile a reptile. We spoke about them having cold blood and a hard skin , and that they lay eggs too. We also discussed their living environment and how they differ.

AND we had a SUPER awesome visitor on Wednesday at school , we had the coolest reptiles come visit us at school and we got to touch and hold different reptiles, it was hands down the best day of the week.

For art this week , we had so much fun ! We made our very own reptile booklets , which we had the best time creating, and we made the cutest hexagon Turtles, each child had to colour in , and cut out their own hexagons , and make their own turtles , we loved how each turtle came out so differently and beautifully.

YOGA

Welcome back after our mid-term break

After doing our warm ups and stretches, we played broken telephone.

The benefits of this game are:

Improved communication and listening skills by encouraging kids to listen and focus to the words being said and to correctly relay the information to their friend.

We had some very funny messages being passed along. One sentence in particular ” the yellow sun shines” came out at as “the yellow donkey”

Heart matters

In Heart Matters this week , Teacher Hela spoke about expected and unexpected reactions and emotions. She explained how things can happen unexpectedly and then we react accordingly to that action.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week we had a super fun lesson with coach Trevor , he hyped us up so much , and really ensured we enjoyed our lessons with him.

For the boys , they were divided into two teams , and they were placed with a bucket full of balls, and then coach Trevor called out a colour , and the teams had to take out all the colour balls before the time ran out.

For the girls , the girls climbing skills were put to the test , each girl was given a small amount of time to climb up and climb back down before the buzzer went off.

It was overall a fun and very educational week for the Curious Crew.
