IB Principle: This week we spoke about being a good communicator. How using the steps are so important such as not speaking too fast or too slow, too loud, or too soft. We explained this by having the Squad pair up and practice different scenarios. We also discussed how eye-contact is crucial, listening and thinking before we blurt out our answers.

Writing and Phonics: The Squad used their ‘’look’’ glasses this week to spot their sight words in a worksheet. They also wrote these sight words down. Our new sight words for the week are ‘’mom’’ and ‘’dad’’. Please continue to practice these at home. We have also been focusing on letter sounding which in turn affects how we pronounce our words. Using incidental learning is a fun way to interact with your child – sticking letters around the house and having them spot them.

Mathematics: Maths this week was focused around counting backwards, we have noticed how the Squad tend to forget the numbers 16 and 18. The children also completed their very first set of addition sums using objects and working out to 10. They can be very proud of themselves because they all did so well.

Creative Art: In sticking with the theme, the Squad were asked to complete a stranger danger worksheet where we spoke about what makes a stranger? What should we say when we are faced with a stranger and what should we do? We also drew some unsafe areas as well as safe areas – ending off by forming a stranger using foil and sticking him/her onto our sheet.

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor practiced with the Sqaud for our annual Sports Day. We are getting very excited for this, and we cannot wait to show you what the Squad can do!

Music: We have been practicing our concert songs and working through the tempo of each song.

Cooking: This week we created our very fire using icing sugar, Marie biscuits and pretzels. Delicious!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Stop, drop and roll into the weekend!

This year for safety week we did activities and practiced safe rules and although we did some artworks such as making our own safety signboards and mini fire extinguishers, we deemed this week a more practical theme than an arty one. We focused on following rules that keep you safe and we did a fire drill so that we know what to do in the event of a fire. Curious Crew also learnt STOP, DROP, and ROLL. During ring times we discussed general safety, how to keep ourselves and others safe in different areas of our lives and stranger danger.

This week as we prepped the Crew for a fire drill, they were eager to learn and WOW the Crew were all out of the class in under a minute and all the children were calm and collected! Well done, Crew, you did such a wonderful job on this fire drill!

Music and Movement: On Tuesday after break Curious Crew got to do some concert practice and we started learning the lyrics to our concert songs. They did amazing and even learnt some of the steps to our dancing song!

FunFit Sports: The amazing Coach Trevor continued to prepare our little athletes for the upcoming sports day and by the looks of things our Curious Crew kiddies are eager to show off their athletics skills to all the moms and dads.

Cooking: This week we decided to make iced “STOP” sign cookies and while we were making our cookies in the kitchen teachers explained how to work safely in the kitchen, so no accidents happen, and no one gets hurt.

We completed 2 worksheets and 1 colouring sheet this week. The first was a tracing worksheet where the children had to trace the outlines of hexagons and draw a picture in the middle and everyone did so well with this activity and their drawing skills really shined.

The next was a letter “S” worksheet where the Crew traced the letter with rainbow colours to get used to letter formation when writing, it was so good to see their grip and control improving. We finished off with a colouring activity and as they colour we encourage them to colour neatly, slowly and with control, this is not to try put them in a box of colouring in the lines but to help develop their fine motor muscles in their hands.

We also got to have a birthday ring this week for Emily, welcome to the 5-year-old gang Emily! We hope you enjoy every moment. All our Curious Crew enjoyed celebrating Emily’s special day.

What an amazing week with so many fun activities. Have a great weekend parents!

Welcome back after our mid-term break.

This week we learnt all about safety. We concentrated mostly on road Safety.

Outside play is always a lot of fun, where the children get to explore and work on gross motor skills. We incorporated inside and outside play with road safety. We took the Hoppers outside to practice looking left and right before crossing our zebra crossing.

The Hoppers learnt about how to put out a fire on their clothing in the unlikely event of an accident. STOP DROP and ROLL!!!

We practiced our fire drill and the whole school responded so well.

Happy Hoppers art this week they had to exercise their listening and visual skills by following instructions; we did a fun art marble rolling exercise, which symbolized a fire, and they created a fun fire engine that was made from shapes. We have decided to keep this for our art show.

We did a dot-to-dot worksheet on how to draw a hexagon.

We did a lot puzzle-building this week, moms and dads please encourage your little ones to build more puzzles at home. Puzzles are great for cognitive skills, problem-solving skills, fine motor skills, and hand-eye co-ordination.

Yoga Friday

Starting our session with stretches and our sun salutation sequence, we moved onto our yoga cards. Each card had a coloured shape on one side and a yoga pose on the other. After identifying the shape and colour on the card, we then had to demonstrate the pose. This is a lovely exercise to practice our colours and shapes aswell as visual interpretation of the pictures. Well, done our little Hoppers, you all did a fantastic job!!

For cooking this week, our Hoppers made a traffic light waffer biscuit and the children used icing sugar to paste on yellow, green, and red smarties on them to look like a traffic light. The Hoppers loved this cooking activity, and they definitely know the meaning of a traffic light and what the colours represent. Great job!!

This was a short week but so much fun and very eventful.

Our theme next week is: My Family

Have a wonderful weekend!

“Stop, look and listen, before you cross the street. Use your eyes, use your ears, before you move your feet!”

This week was all about safety! Safety at school, at home, at the mall, while crossing the road… as well as fire safety and stranger danger.

  • Safety at school: We revisited our school rules. We also learnt why it wasn’t okay to use things or toys that we have been asked not to use, because there is a possibility that we could get hurt.
  • Safety at home: We spoke about the rules of the kitchen- don’t touch the hot stove or try to pull the kettle closer to you. Be careful when walking down or up the stairs. Be careful around the pool and so many more!
  • Safety at the mall: Never ever NEVER!!!! Leave your Mommy or Daddy’s side when you go shopping with them. Always hold their hand and make sure that they can always see you. (This category fell part of our stranger danger discussion as well)
  • Safety while crossing the road: Look left, then right, then left again… Listen for any cars or noises… and once you are positive that it is all clear, then you can cross the road!
  • Fire safety: If (touch wood this never happens) you ever find yourself on fire… the rules are STOP… DROP… AND ROLL until the fire has stopped. The Bugs had so much fun practicing this task.

Follow all of these safety rules and you will definitely be able to keep yourself safe from harm or danger!

We focused more on practical activities and demonstrations this week, and did a small art piece.

As a messy play activity this week, we used shaving cream and powder paint to make a beautiful fire! We then got to spray some water on the fire to put it out, and finally… the best part of the day, getting to smoosh and squish the “fire” with our hands and get SUPER-DUPER messy!

We took a walk outside to the zebra crossing and practiced the safe way to cross a road. We also used red, yellow and green items as a “robot” and acted out what each colour means.

For our art piece this week, our Bugs got to put their observation and interpretation skills to the test and create a still life painting of a traffic cone and a stop sign. This was by no means an easy task, but we observed basic shape formation and understanding happening in the “round” shape of a stop sign and triangle shape of the traffic cone.

We hope you all have a lovely, restful weekend and we look forward to seeing all of our Bugs back at school next week.

Next Week’s Theme: Me and My Family

Please send Teacher Gemma a photograph of your family (fur children can be included ;)…) sometime over the weekend, as well as the names of your “main” family members. We are creating a surprise slideshow for our Bugs to show them during the week! We are so excited to see their faces when they see their lovely families on our screen!

This week at school, we’ve been all about safety, and it’s been such a joy sharing the experience with your amazing children. Here’s a closer look at what we’ve been up to:

We kicked off the week by revisiting our classroom rules. We discussed why it’s important not to run in the classroom or stand on chairs, emphasizing the need to keep our learning environment safe and fun for everyone.

Our road safety lessons were a hit! We took the children outside to practice crossing the street safely using the zebra crossing. They learned to look left and right for cars, and their excitement on their faces was truly heartwarming.

We then also learnt about the “stop, drop, and roll” technique. We made sure the Pups understood what to do in case of a fire emergency, all while keeping the lesson fun and exciting as well.

Our art activities were a highlight of the week. The children got to unleash their creativity by making handprint firemen, which turned out absolutely adorable! We also explored numbers through fun, hands-on activities.

And let’s not forget about the Art Expo surprises! While I can’t spill the beans just yet, just know that your little artists have been working hard creating something truly special.

Today, we had a blast with shaving cream and colours. Mixing red, orange, and yellow and made it look just like fire! The kids were completely in their element by this activity.

Looking ahead, our next adventure we will focus on “Me and My Family.” We’ll be exploring what makes each family special and celebrating the bonds that unite us all.

Please remember to label all belongings and send in a family photo for our discussions.

Warmest hugs!~

Writing and Phonics: This week we added two brand new sight words – “I” and “can”. We also completed handwriting on our next three letters “M”, “N” and “O”. The Squad are getting the hang of writing in their lined books and are also doing well with keeping finger spaces between their letters.

a, am, look, at, me, in, here, I, can

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week we reiterated addition to 10. We also completed this by focusing on the different ways that children learn – we jumped like little frogs using a number line, we also used counters and then we completed sums on the board. Well Done, Squad!

Life Skills: “Thinkers”- we practiced allowing the children to think up different ways that they would like to learn or complete an activity and what we realised is that there are so many different ways that we can learn from each other if we put all of our ideas together.

Art: We had so much fun with our fire drill this week, the Squad remained calm and walked so nicely to the meeting point. Well Done! For art this week we created our very own burning house and fireman to the rescue poster. Using different elements (tactile objects). We will be keeping this beautiful piece for Art Expo.

Afrikaans: For Afrikaans this week went over the days of the week in Afrikaans. We also completed a worksheet where the children had to match up the English days of the week with the Afrikaans days of the week.

Cooking & Music: For cooking this week, we took the Squad to the kitchen and showed them the different parts to a kitchen. The pantry, the wash basin, the stove etc. We also went over kitchen equipment such as a scale and a pan and pot. Lastly, we discussed how to be safe in the kitchen. For music this week we went over some concert songs as when we return from mid-term we will be practicing these more and more.

It has been a great week. Have a beautiful mid-term.

See you all next week Tuesday.

This week in the Curious Crew class we focused on the most important safety rules that we get , we spoke about the dangers of playing with matches and plugs and we spoke quite a lot about stranger danger too. The class each had a turn to talk about things that they think are important safety rules.

Something the class quite enjoyed focusing on stranger danger and they enjoyed telling different scenarios of what they think is stranger danger.

Our heart matters lesson this week , was an absolute hit ! The class learnt about the different emotion zones , blue , yellow , green and red , and they all received cute helpful little posters to take home with coping mechanisms for when we feel like we are in the red , yellow or blue Zone , and throughout the rest of the week , on the playground and in the classroom we saw how children incorporated these coping mechanisms when feeling down , angry or upset.

We do hope that this helps your child at home , as much as it has already helped them in the classroom

For art this week , we made our very own safety posters, we all had to colour in the different safety rules we’ve covered throughout the week , it our their job to cut out and paste the rules on their own posters , they had to then create their own safety rule , and the posters really came out so nicely. This was a big focus on our fine motor skills as we cut out a few pictures , and it was impressive to see how how everyone is doing regarding their cutting and sticking , even just their colouring skills have been impressive !! WAAAY TO GO CURIOUS CREW!!

This is evident that persistence is key ! 🙌🏼

Throughout the week we also focused on our rote counting and counting backwards , we practiced our name writing and number formation too, it is so amazing to see the progress and pride that has been taking place in the curious crew classroom.

We also did a fun worksheet where they had to recognise and identify the differences between a hexagon , pentagon and an octagon, the curious crew grasped this concept amazingly quick and all enjoyed completing this task with utmost ease.

We ended our week off with our monthly birthday ring , where we celebrated the birthday of Michaela and Kelaiah. It is so joyous to celebrate our class friends together as we sing and enjoy birthday cupcakes 🧁.

We’ve had a fun-filled week with this theme and did a lot of role-play… STOP … DROP and ROLL! We utilised the playground to do a fire safety activity where the children would STOP, DROP and ROLL to put out the fire on their clothing.

Outside play is always a lot of fun, where the children get to explore and work on gross motor skills. We incorporated inside and outside play with road safety. We did many role-play activities following the rules of the road, zebra crossing, stopping when you see a stop sign or red light, yield with yellow light and green light to go! Teacher Thandeka was our robot and each child had a turn following the lights of the robot, while the pedestrians used the zebra crossing to look left and right before crossing the road.

For our first artwork, our Happy Hoppers had to exercise their listening and visual skills by following instructions; we did a progressive art marble rolling exercise, which symbolised fire and an “invite to create” a Fire Engine!

Our second artwork was creating a stop sign, our Hoppers had to use their fine motor skills and join dots with a red crayon making a hexagon shape which also made a stop sign, this art piece included our shape, colour, and number of the week.

We did a lot of puzzle-building this week, mom’s and dad’s please encourage your little ones to build more puzzles at home. Puzzles are great for cognitive skills, problem-solving skills, fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination.

The Hoppers’ concentration skills were put to the test at FunFit Sports. Coach Dave asked the children to make a circle and then attempted to roll a ball through a Hopper’s legs at any given time. The Hoppers had to try and quickly stop the ball! They all did such a great job!

For cooking this week, our Hoppers made traffic light biscuits, the biscuits were dipped in chocolate and the children put yellow, green, and red smarties on them to look like a traffic light. So much fun putting these together and at the end, we had a “sneaky” smartie J

It has been a great week.

This week we learnt all about Safety, such as:

Safety at school – We revised the classroom rules.

Safety at home – We spoke about the Do’s and Don’ts in all the different rooms.

Safety on the road – How to cross the street.

Fire safety – STOP DROP AND ROLL

For our art activity we made a tear and stick picture of a fire.

We focused on our number and colour of the week being number 3 and the colour red. We counted out all sorts pf objects and placed them into groups of 3 and we tried to spot as many objects in the classroom that’s red.

At yoga this week we sang the yoga song which the Pups warmed up to. The Pups practiced their poses and learnt a new stat pose.

Please take note of the following:

No toys allowed at school as this causes fights amongst the kiddies.

Please make sure to label ALL belongings.

A big thank you to all the moms and dads for all their love and support they show our EcoFamily.

Language:

Our week started off with our exciting weekend news.  The children love interacting and listening to their friends’ news.  Our new theme was introduced, and we spoke about how we can keep ourselves safe and about the people that keep us safe.

During literacy we went over our sight words: “look, in, the, me, at, he, here and she”. We are so impressed with the Smart Squad and their reading progress. We went over the letter of the week and introduced our next 3 letters; P, Q, R. We spoke about the name of the letters and the sounds they make.  We also named words beginning with those letters. We did a beginning sound phonics worksheet and were very impressed by the children!

Writing:

We did some finger warm up exercises and started practicing the correct formation for P, Q and R on our white boards. The children then had to write those letters in their books. We also did a stranger worksheet where the children had to copy off the board.

Maths:

This week we focused on simple addition up to 5. We used concrete objects to explain the method and did some addition sums in our workbooks. We also practiced counting in 2’s by circling all the even numbers in our math’s books.

Life Skills:

We spoke about stranger danger and who would be classified as a stranger. We also spoke about why we shouldn’t trust someone just because they “look nice”.

What a great week it has been.

See you all next week.

Have a fabulous midterm break.

Art!

This week we did a fire painting. The children used red, orange and gold glitter to paint the fire.

They then stuck down black strips of paper to make a silhouette of a burning house.

The Squaders loved this activity!
