Moral conscious theme: IB Principle – Reflective: We explained to the Squad how important it is to give thought and consideration to their learning and choices and that they must act with honesty. They must not be afraid of failing and making mistakes as this will help them grow and improve. We reminded them that it is okay to ask for help and that they will not face challenges alone.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad worked hard on remembering and reading their new sight word for the week “it” and “the”. We also played a fun game where the Squad had to go hunt for their sight words around the classroom. We are very impressed by how the Squad have remembered their sight words, please keep practicing sight words at home too. We also practiced letter formations in our workbooks using the “cat method”. – Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week the Squad practiced counting backwards from 30-0 and number names 1-10. We completed additional sums using concrete objects using our whiteboards. We then practiced number formation 1-10 in our workbooks.

Cooking: For our cooking class this week, the Squad did an interesting experiment where we made our own Crunchy Rock Candy, using ice-cream sticks, boiling water, food colouring and sugar. The Squad were fascinated by how the crystals were formed, once the water temperature decreased more molecules joined the sugar crystals.

Creative Art: The Squad did an activity based on different states of matter, gas- oxygen, liquid- water and solid- ice. They understood this concept well and added different materials to differentiate the distances between the particles, such as the solid keeps the particles together tightly enough so that the particles do not move past eachother.

Afrikaans: The Squad completed a worksheet where they had to fill in the correct letter to complete the word next to the picture, such as “oomys”, they added in an “r” to form the word “roomys” (ice-cream). We recapped on body parts, colours and animals in afrikaans. Be sure to ask your child the different colours in Afrikaans, we are super proud of how they remember these. Way to go Squad!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Science and experiments is always an exciting theme! This year we tried to do simple but effective experiments with concepts that the Crew could easily grasp. We also used this week to start assessments on the children to see where they are at with all their skills and development which we will be continuing into next week.

Experiments for the week:

I couldn’t think of a better experiment than a volcano reaction! Bicarbonate of soda with a little food colouring and of course vinegar! While the first group of children were busy at Fun Fit Sports I could hear the group of children inside screaming as the excitement of their volcano’s going over, it was quite funny!

Using tissue paper rolled around a pencil and then scrunched up, we called this experiment ‘The Growing worm’ Each Crew member had to drop water onto their worm with a pipet and as the water dropped onto the worm we watched him move and grow bigger. Paper absorbs water.

Next experiment we explored was using oil, water and food colouring. Not only was this a pretty experiment to watch but it also taught the Crew that oil is thicker than water which makes it float and the water sink.

Another cool experiment that we did was on a plate of water with a lit candle in the middle. As we put a glass over the candle, the flame slowly goes out and the water starts to get sucked up into the glass.

Amongst some of the assessment work that we did this week, we covered number recognition. A colouring in worksheet with the instruction to colour slowly and carefully using lots of different colours. The Crew has to complete a name writing activity where they had to trace over their name and then write it themselves underneath it.

We practiced cutting skills and tracing skills. We complete a free drawing where we wrote little notes on what the children were drawing and they also completed a body image activity.

This week we also focused on 3 specific letters of the alphabet, ‘s’ ‘a’ and ‘t’. We wrote it down on the board and named a few items that started with these 3 letters. We complete tracing worksheets with each of these 3 letters and formed them in playdough. Next week we will be concentrating on the letters, ‘p’, ‘i’ and ‘n’.

Fun Fit Sports this week we practiced some ball skills as well as hand eye co-ordination. Catching a big ball is easy but catching a smaller tennis size ball is a little more tricky! The Crew also played a little cricket which is quite a favourite amongst the class.

Cooking this week, the Crew helped Chef Thembi in the kitchen with helping prepare their snack. On Thursday when the Crew had French toast they had to go to the kitchen and dip their own bread into the egg and watched their French toast cooking on the pan. Great job in the kitchen Crew!

Thank goodness this week we got to participate in yoga again! With all these holidays we have missed yoga so much! Teacher Nicole is so much fun! This yoga session was a little different. The Crew got to plat TETRIS! This game engages several cognitive skills such as memory, matching and pattern recognition. It also promotes problem solving and thinking patterns. The aim of the game is to fit all the pieces in to fill up the board. It was a super fun activity and everyone worked nicely together as a team. Go CURIOUS CREW!

Next week’s theme: Occupations and people who care for us.

The Happy Hoppers had a lovely week watching their teachers entertain them with all sorts of different experiments.

The Hoppers did an exciting M &M experiment, it was about watching the colours moving to the middle of the plate.

Our second experiment was a bouncy egg experiment. You place an egg in a glass and cover it with vinegar. The vinegar will eat the shell away only leaving the inside of the egg which becomes like a rubber ball. The Hoppers loved feeling the ball and even tried to bounce it.

The third experiment of the week was a raincloud experiment. You take a jar fill it with water then cover it with shaving foam then add a few drops of blue food colouring and then watch the rain fall.

Then we did a Rainbow paper experiment and a dancing rice experiment. This was an amazing week full of magic and excitement doing all these different experiments.

We also had a lot of fun free painting all sorts of interesting pictures it is so lovely to see how these little people’s art and paintings develop throughout the year.

Another activity we concentrated on this week was our cutting skills. Please let your little Hopper practise lots of cutting at home.

Yoga was a little different… we played TETRIS!

This game engages several cognitive skills such as memory, matching and pattern recognition. It also promotes problem solving and thinking patterns. The aim of the game is to fit all the pieces in to fill up the board. It was a super fun activity, and everyone worked nicely together as a team.

Please note there are still a number of clothing, shoes, blankets, bottles etc that are not labelled so please make an extra big effort to label ALL your child’s belongings.

Next week’s theme is: Occupations and people who help us

Have a wonderful weekend. See you all on Monday.

This is such a fun and interactive theme! The children love watching all the teachers run around, crazy professor style, making things fizz, bubble, melt, explode, glitter and whizz! We love it – it gives us a chance to be kids again too! What an EPIC WEEK!

This week we covered a few basic experiments, that the Bugs absolutely loved being a part of!

  • Magic flowers – kitchen paper roll and koki pen flowers, sprayed with water. We watched how the ink ran and mixed with the water to make beautiful bunches of flowers.
  • Invisible ink – we drew on paper with paintbrushes and lemon juice and then watched our drawings come to life when teacher heated the “ink” up with a flame – a great way to leave secret messages or make a treasure hunt!
  • Sink and float – we explored which items would float and which ones would sink, and explained the concepts of heavy and light to the children.
  • Volcano – Teacher Gemma showed us how a volcano erupts using the volcano she made when she was at school. This Volcano erupts REAL fire! The Busy Bugs absolutely loved this!
  • Teacher Monette and Gemma also did a very funny experiment for the Bugs, that involved “moving water” from Teacher Gemma’s mouth, through a willing volunteer, and out of Teacher Monette’s mouth. If this isn’t making sense at all, don’t stress, we will send the video of the experiment. Hehe! The Bugs were absolutely speechless and had rather confused looks on their faces when we were done!

This is a wonderful theme, and opens up the minds and imaginations of the children so much. There are so many, very easy and cost effective science experiments to do with children at home and it really sparks their life long interests in the sciences! See if you can do some experiments with your children this weekend or over the holidays.

Oh, what an absolute blast we had with our Science and Experiments theme! It was hands-down one of the highlights for our little adventurers!

Let me tell you about our first experiment—it was pure magic! We took some wood glue and sprinkled salt on top, then waited eagerly for it to dry. Once it was all set, we grabbed our paintbrushes and added splashes of colourful paint. The Pups were absolutely enthralled as they watched the colours swirl and mix together, just like a beautiful rainbow unfolding before their eyes!

And then came our pepper, water, and soap experiment—what a hoot! We filled bowls with water and pepper, and then added a dash of soap. The moment that soap touched the water, it was like a party! The pepper scattered away, following the soap’s lead. It was like a tiny pepper parade right before our eyes!

Now, let’s talk about our week dedicated to the colour yellow. We gathered all sorts of sunny yellow objects and spent time talking about each one. The giggles and excitement were contagious as we explored the vibrant world of yellow together!

But that’s not all—we also engaged in some fine motor activities that were a hit with our little ones. With careful hands, we scooped tiny beads and big beads into a muffin pan, showcasing some impressive coordination and concentration.

Each experiment and activity wasn’t just about learning science or colours—it was about creating lasting memories and sparking curiosity in our young explorers. Oh, what a marvellous journey it was!

Last week we spoke all about occupations and what the Hoppers want to be when they grow up. We had lots of discussions about all the different kinds of occupations and what kinds of jobs their moms and dads do!

With it being a short week and practicing for sports day, we made this week a more practical one with lots of role-play activities. After our discussion, we told our Hoppers to go play but they must pretend to be what they want to be when they grow up. This was so cute, we have a few hairdressers, some doctors, some Chefs, A mommy, and even some superheroes in our class. J

For our second activity, we investigated a couple of X-rays on the light table and learnt about what an x-ray is, “a picture of our bones”.

We put our Hopper’s fine motor, spatial perception, and eye-hand coordination skills to the test this week with a threading activity! To create our letter of the week, we gave our children two paper bones to make an ‘x’ for their X-rays. We punched nine holes around their x-rays and our children had to thread blue wool in and out. Threading is quite a tricky activity but our kiddies did so well! We will keep practicing this skill.

For cooking this week, Chef Thembi took the Hoppers on a tour of the kitchen. They learnt about kitchen safety precautions and hygiene, how to use the gas oven and stove, how the chefs dish up and pack their snack and lunch onto the trollies, and all the different kinds of kitchen utensils and their uses. For the tour, the kiddies got to dress up in an apron, this was super exciting for them!

On Friday, for Show and Tell, we had a dress-up day of what our Hoppers want to be when they grow up.  They looked so adorable! We also did a practice round for our sports day, we are so sad we didn’t get to do it but it will now take place on the 20 May. Please save the date!

This week was Science and Experiments, this theme was such a hit with the Hoppers. The amount of interest, curiosity, and questions that came from the Happy Hoppers was awesome to see and hear. This week we have not done any art activities, as it is a very practical theme. We hope that the Hoppers went home with some experiment knowledge to share with you.

We did the following experiments in class:

  1. Rubber Egg
  2. Colour rainbow
  3. Ice cream in a bag
  4. Dancing Rice
  5. Lemon Volcano
  6. Rain cloud in a jar
  7. Fire works in a jar
  8. Magic Milk

Rubber Egg

For this experiment you need a raw egg and a cup of vinegar. The shell of an egg is made up of primarily calcium carbonate. If you soak an egg in vinegar you start a chemical reaction that dissolves the calcium carbonate shell. The acetic acid reacts with the calcium carbonate in the eggshell and releases carbon dioxide gas that you see as bubbles on the shell. Leave the egg for 24 hours and you have a “naked egg”. It is squishy and can bounce, but be careful not to bounce too hard as it will pop. When our “naked egg” was ready, each Hopper got a turn to feel the difference between a regular raw egg and our egg after the experiment to compare the hard shell and the membrane shell. At the end of the experiment, we popped the egg to show the kiddies how thin the membrane was.

Colour Rainbow

For this experiment we got 2 cups of water. We placed folded tissue paper from cup to cup after we had coloured the ends of the tissue in different colours. As the tissue bridged over the cups, the colour water soaks into the tissue and hops over the bridge creating a beautiful rainbow.

Ice cream in a bag

The children’s favourite experiment was the ice cream in the bag experient, it tasted so delicios too. We added cream, sugar and milk into one bag and in another bag we added ice and course salt. We then added the cream and milk mixture bag to the ice bag and shook it around like crazy until we had ice cream. The was so fun to do, the Hoppers had a turn in shaking and feeling how cold the ice got from the salt.

Dancing Rice

this experiment did not exactly go according to plan, which was not a bad thing because it taught the children that sometimes not all experiments work out and that is exactly why we try out experiments!

The intention was to add bicarb, water, vinegar and a tablespoon of raw rice together. As the chemicals react, it starts to fizz and causes the rice to “dance”. This would be a cool experiment to try at home with your Hopper! If it works out, let us know!

Lemon Volcano

We cut the top part of the lemon and added green food colouring to the lemon. We then added bicarb to the lemon and stuck a knife in to get the juice out. The chemical reaction caused the lemon to fizz like lava running down a volcano! The Hoppers loved this experiment.

Fireworks in a jar

This experiment also didn’t go so well, next time we will try the gel food colouring. We filled a jar with water. We then poured some oil and food colouring into a little bowl and added food colouring. We then added the oil mixture to the jar. The colours were meant to go into the water and look like fireworks but it all just seemed to mix and we ended up with just one colour and no fireworks.

Rain cloud in a jar

This experiment worked well. We filled a jar with water. We made a cloud on top of the water with shaving cream. We then put some green food colouring on top of the cloud, the food colouring seeped through the shaving cream and it looked like rain coming from a cloud,  this was very cool to see.

Magic Milk

This experiment was one of our favourites. We put some milk into a shallow bowl and added 3 different colours of food colouring to the milk. I dipped my finger into the dishwashing liquid and touched the milk, the colours moved and made mesmerizing patterns in the milk. So much fun and very pretty to see.

The Hoppers had their last FunFit Sports session with Coach Dave, they all had a fun lesson with him and said their goodbyes, We will miss coach Dave but we are looking forward to meeting our new Coach that will be taking over in term 2.

What I fun and exciting week it has been.  Have a lovely weekend, and maybe try out some of our experiments or even new ones, if you do please share with us on our group.

Our theme next week is Autumn, Birds Migration and Easter.

Occupations and People Who Help Us:

We have had so much fun this week learning about occupations and people who help us. Doctors, dentists, hairdressers, firemen, policemen and so many more. We got to see what each job involves and what they offer, and on Friday, we got to see the kiddos dressed up as their dream job. We had everything from a fairy to a firemen, motorcycle winner, doctors, judges, chef and builders. They looked absolutely amazing!

We have been so busy this week with developing our fine motor skills like threading, puzzles and playing with playdough. These activities are highly recommended for our Pups to do even at home. The more these little hands do the faster and more developed these skills with improve.

Our art activity this week we choose to make a police car which the Pups had lots of fun painting and I helped them with the finishing touches.

Can you believe there is only one and a half weeks of term 1 left! How the time has flown by!!

PLEASE remember to label ALL your child’s belongings even their shoes. There are still many unmarked items being sent to school and when all the kids are on the playground and items are not marked it makes it difficult to find there way back home at times.

 Next week’s theme: Science Experiments

Science and Experiments:

For a new theme, it was by far one of the favorites! We introduced the Science and Experiments theme to try and get our kiddies more involved in science, and they loved it! There was excitement from day one and we were constantly asked “when are we going to do that one?”

For our first experiment, did the crazy comb and water. The science is that the atoms in your hair have more electrons, which are negatively charged, than protons, which are positively charged. The electrons build in the hair due to friction. Did you know? Forensic scientist sometimes examine combs to solve mysteries! Hair samples, which contain DNA, often serve as useful evidence when determining if a person was at a crime scene.

Second experiment was called Holy Hair. Rubbing one substance against another substance causes a buildup of electrons. The wall is a neutral until it comes into contact with a charged substance like a balloon. Its electrons are repelled by the negatively charged balloon, making it positively charged – causing the balloon to stick.

Our big experiment was our volcano.

We tried a few other small experiments which we sent on the Pups WhatsApp group.

We hope you have a lovely weekend. See you all on Monday and remember next week is our last week of Term 1 and it’s a 4 day week.

The bubble in the pen lid is compressed when we squeeze the bottle and the lid sinks to the bottom! It rises again when we release pressure on the bottle. We explained that the bubble inside the lid is keeping the lid floating, but it gets smaller when squeezed, just like playdough, and then it is not big enough to keep the lid floating!
  • We learnt about static electricity by taking balloon, rubbing it on our hair and then making tissue paper butterflies flap their wings.
  • Volcano – Teacher Gemma showed us how a volcano erupts using the volcano she made when she was at school. This Volcano erupts REAL fire! The Busy Bugs absolutely loved this!

 Skittle Patterns

The children’s favourite experiment was the skittles experiment! We placed skittles in a circle on a plate, made up of different patterns. We then added warm water to the plate and once the water had touched the skittles the colour from the skittles started to move out into a pattern towards the center! This was a very pretty experiment.

 Dancing Rice

This experiment did not exactly go according to plan, which was not a bad thing because it taught the children that sometimes not all experiments work out and that is exactly why we try out experiments!

 Lemon Volcano

We cut a lemon in half and added pink food colouring to one half and blue to the other. We then added bicarb and a few drops of vinegar to the lemon. The chemical reaction caused the lemon to fizz like lava running down a volcano!

 Static Electricity

We blew up a few balloons and rubbed them against everyone’s hair to show them how the static electricity makes their hair stand up! You can just imagine the giggle reaction we got from this!

Our theme next week is: Autumn, Birds Migration and Easter.

Have a safe and lovely weekend!

Easter is around the corner!

We For this week’s cooking, we made our Easter cooking because next week is a short one! We made delicious Chocolate Easter Egg Nests! Everyone got a turn to break up the pretzel sticks, we then added melted chocolate and sprinkles which were all mixed together. The kiddies scooped the mixture into cupcake holders and added some speckled eggs to complete the look! Not only do they look adorable, but they also taste delicious!
