Pp – Pets

Hello Smart Squad Parents !

What a wonderful week we have had. Our theme was Pets, and the children absolutely loved every moment of learning, sharing, and interacting.

An incredibly special highlight was all our amazing pet visitors. On Monday we had Farryn and Sierra bring their dogs to school. On Tuesday Teacher Nicole brought her hedgehog. Georgia’s and Bailey’s brought their three dogs. We also met Jordy’s lovely yorkie dog. Rowan brought his African grey, and Skylar brought her beautiful love birds. Lea brought her snails. And last but not least we met Jenive’s cat. The children were so engaged, showing kindness, curiosity, and excitement with each visit.

Smart Squad learnt all about how to care for pets.

Being gentle and respectful to animals.

Different types of pets and their needs.

Sharing our own pet stories and experiences.

Maths fun this week:

Counting pets and grouping them.

Sorting animals by size and type.

Comparing more/less with different pets.

Simple patterns using animal pictures.

We coloured a colour by shape picture.

For phonics we finished our letter formation u, v, x, and y.

Art this week we made a beautiful fish out of CD’s which we will keep for our art show in October.

YAY FOR YOGA DAY!

Yoga warm: up Our stretches this week focused more on forward bends which helps stretch hamstrings, calves, and hips. It also improves digestion and calms the brain.

Yoga song: we had a new song today called ” Happy Yoga Day.”

yoga game: We played Mrs Yoga says which has the same concept as Simon Says but using Yoga poses.

Our Squad had a two min quiet time just to relax before snack time.

Thank you so much for your support and for sharing your beautiful pets with us it made our week truly special.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend 🌈

Hello Smart Squad Parents! 🌟

Wow, where has the week gone? We just blinked our eyes, and suddenly the week was over! It’s true, time flies when you’re having fun.

This week was super busy but full of fun. We focused on our homes, and it was so lovely to hear the children talk about the places they call home. In art, the kiddos made beautiful hut houses their creativity was amazing! 🏠✨

For phonics, we concentrated on letter formation: u, v, w, x. We’re almost at the end of the alphabet! Practising letter formation may seem boring at times, but it’s a very important part of learning to write correctly. Getting this right from the beginning helps children put words together properly later on. ✍️

For numeracy this week we played a variety of number games like number hunt and clap the number. We also carried on practising number formation which is so important to teach children how to correctly write numbers and builds several important early learning skills. We teach our Smart Squad this skill all the time so they learn the proper way to write each number. Where to start and which direction to go. This prevents bad writing habits later on.

Yoga Day 🧘♂️ 💜

yoga story

We listened to an interactive story about Betsy the Banana 🍌

We listened to all the fun things that Betsy did on her adventure and joined in by doing the yoga poses

 Yoga poses

Banana, skydiving, butterfly, dancers, boat and candle poses

breath work balloon, candle and relax breath

Finishing off with quiet time and spinal stretching.

We had such a wonderful learning week in class. The kiddo’s worked very hard and had lots of fun while learning.

We are so proud and happy with our Smart Squad learners.

Have a lovely weekend.

Hi there, Parents, 😊

We had such a wonderful week. It truly flew by.

This week we learnt all about our Families one of the most important and meaningful themes we explore. It was so special to hear about all the different family types and members in our class. This theme really helps us get to know your children better, and they looked so proud sharing information about their loved ones. 💛 Thank you for all the kiddo’s beautiful show and tell.

We also shared some lovely stories about our own families, and the kiddos absolutely loved learning more about us too. Some of them were kind of shocked that we don’t live at school. They are so funny.

For art this week, the learners created a special surprise for our upcoming Art Show, incorporating our family theme 🎨✨ We can’t wait for you to see it!

In phonics, we continued with correct letter formation for p, q, r, s, t. We are almost at the end of the alphabet, and then we can start building words. Yay! 😁

In our time to read workbooks we worked on our sounds dots for example cat will be three sounds dots. It’s a visual tool used to help children hear and identify the individual sounds {phonemes} in a word. Each dot represents one sound in a word. Our Smart Squad learners are grasping this skill very quickly.

Coding this week was all about repeating patterns.

This week’s yoga class!

Ss – Safety

Another wonderful week with our Smart Squad kids! 🌟

This week we learnt all about Safety 🚦🦺

We spoke about different kinds of safety and how to keep ourselves safe at school, at home and in the community. The children loved sharing their ideas and experiences!

Here’s what we focused on:

🛑 Road Safety – Looking both ways before crossing, holding an adult’s hand, and understanding what traffic lights mean.

🔥 Fire Safety – What to do if there is a fire, not playing with matches, and knowing to tell an adult immediately.

👫 Personal Safety – Understanding safe and unsafe situations, the difference between a secret and a surprise, and who our trusted adults are.

🏫 School Safety – Walking inside the classroom, using equipment correctly, and keeping our hands and feet to ourselves.

🎨 Art Activity – We made our very own traffic lights! The children coloured, cut, and assembled their red, orange and green circles while reinforcing what each colour means.

🎶 We also learnt a fun Traffic Light song to help us remember:

🔴 Red means STOP

🟠 Orange means GET READY

🟢 Green means GO!

📚 Phonics – We practiced letter formation of M and N.

This helps to:

✏️ Develop correct pencil grip and letter formation

🖐️ Strengthen fine motor skills

👀 Improve letter recognition

🔤 Reinforce the sounds /m/ and /n/

📝 Build early reading and writing confidence

🔢 Numeracy – We completed a comparison worksheet focusing on big, bigger and biggest.

The children had to:

🖍️ Colour

✂️ Cut

📊 Arrange in the correct order

📌 Stick

This activity helps develop:

👀 Visual discrimination

🧠 Understanding of size comparison

 Fine motor control

📏 Early mathematical vocabulary

📖 Time to Read – During our reading time, we completed another fun worksheet. The children had to:

✂️ Cut out pictures

📌 Paste them on the correct side

🔤 Sound out each word carefully

✏️ Draw the sounds into the white boxes as they segmented the word

This activity helps to:

👂 Strengthen phonemic awareness

🧠 Build blending and segmenting skills

👀 Improve word recognition

✍️ Support early spelling and reading development

🎉 We ended off the week with another special birthday ring where we celebrated Basi’s birthday 🎂🥳 What a joyful way to end our week!

Our Smart Squad learners are really adapting beautifully to Grade R and showing us just how clever they are. We are so proud of each and every one of our super stars! 🤩✨

📌 Reminder: Please remember to send your child’s hat back to school after washing it.

Have a wonderful weekend. See you on Monday!

Next week’s theme is My Family ❤️🏡

Ff – Food

This week in Smart Squad we learned all about taking care of our bodies 💪 and our hearts 💛 through healthy eating and beautiful manners 🌼.

We discovered that our bodies are like little engines 🚗⚙️ — they need the right fuel to grow strong and healthy 🌱✨. We spoke about colourful fruits and vegetables 🍎🍊🍌🍇🥕🥦, crunchy carrots 🥕, juicy apples 🍏, and how drinking water 💧 keeps us refreshed and energized .

The children loved sharing their favourite healthy snacks 🥪🍓 and learning how milk 🥛, fruit 🍉, and vegetables 🥗 help us grow big, strong, and clever 🧠✨.

We also practiced lovely table manners 🍽️🌸. We remembered to say “please” 🙏 and “thank you” 💕, to wait patiently for our turn, and to chew with our mouths closed 😁. We practiced sitting nicely on our chairs 🪑, using our spoons and forks correctly 🍴🥄, and keeping our eating area clean and tidy 🧽✨.

We learned that manners are not only for the table — they are for everywhere! 🏫🏡🌍 At school, at home, and in public. Good manners show kindness 💖, respect 🤝, and love 💕 for others.

Through fun role-play 🎭, group chats 🗣️, and practical practice time, our Smart Squad showed us just how responsible and caring they are 🌟👏.

Healthy food makes our bodies strong 💪🍎, and good manners make our friendships strong 💛👫.

This week in Art we made a beautiful fruit basket masterpiece! 🖼️✨

We used a paper plate 🥏 to create our basket and collaged it using tear-and-stick crinkle paper 🧻✂️. The children worked so carefully, tearing the paper and gluing it down to make their baskets colourful and textured 🌈.

Next, we coloured in our delicious fruits 🍓🍑🍎🍌, cut them out neatly ✂️, and glued them into our baskets 🧺. To finish it off, we attached a handle made from string 🧵 so our baskets looked extra realistic and special!

The classroom was filled with bright colours, happy chatter, and beautiful creativity 💛🌟. Well, done, Smart Squad — your fruit baskets are absolutely amazing! 🍇✨

This week’s yoga class!

Calming exercise by rubbing our hands fast together, creating “hot hands” we then placed them gently over our eyes and sat quietly whilst feeling the warmth on our faces.

Ending off with quiet time whilst listening to the sound of Dolphins swimming.

Phonics & Maths Fun ✏️📚🔢

In Phonics 🔤 we are still busy practicing our letter formation. The children are working so hard on holding their pencils correctly ✏️ and forming their letters neatly and carefully. We are focusing on starting at the correct place and taking our time to make beautiful letters. Practice makes perfect! 🌟

In Maths 🔢 we have finished forming numbers 1️ to 🔟 well done, Smart Squad! 👏✨ The children are becoming more confident with number recognition and correct number formation.

This week we also did a fun hands-on activity ✂️🖍️ where we had to cut and paste pictures according to big, bigger, and biggest 🐘🐘🐘. The children carefully looked at the sizes and pasted each item under the correct heading. It was wonderful to see them thinking, comparing, and working so neatly.

In Coding , we worked on sequencing , learning how to put events and instructions in the correct order.

We are so proud of our Smart Squad! Keep shining, little stars.

Ll – Love

Dear Parents, 🌈

This week in Smart Squad we explored something very special and very important: Our Emotions ❤️

There were lots of feelings expressed in our classroom this week… happy giggles, big hugs, and many sweet moments of kindness. We learnt that all our emotions matter and that it’s okay to feel excited, shy, proud, nervous, or even a little sad sometimes.

Through stories, discussions, and play, we spoke about how to name our feelings, understand them, and show care for our friends. The children did such a beautiful job sharing their hearts and supporting one another. It was wonderful to see their empathy growing every day. On Monday at ring time, we all expressed our emotions by choosing somebody to hug. This was such a sweet event to witness,

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, we celebrated one very special emotion — LOVE 💕Love for our friends, our families, and ourselves.

We made some Oreo biscuit “love bugs” they turned out to look so beautiful. We also made a cardboard heart craft that we decorated with cotton wool and dripped some red drops of food colouring on to make different patterns and added a ribbon for a keepsake. Another craft we made with teacher Bernice was a beautiful Valentine’s Day card.

Teacher Cecilia has been working so hard with us every day, helping us grow smarter and more confident. 🌟 We are learning our phonics sounds and practicing our maths skills, counting, writing numbers, and solving fun problems together. This week’s phonics lesson was learning to break up words into syllables.  We also love working in our Time to Read workbooks, where we practise our writing, sound out words, and complete our activities neatly and proudly. 📚✏️ Every day we try our best and are so excited to show our teachers how much we are learning!

On Thursday we went on a lovely nature walk looking at our beautiful school and sharing stories. What a beautiful way to spend our days in such a tranquil environment.

Yay yoga on Monday the theme song was colour me happy. It covers all the emotions and colours associated with these emotions:

Funny- 🩷

Bored- 🩶

Brave-🧡

Jealous-💚

Angry- ❤️

Dreamy-💜

Sad-💙

Happy- 🌈

Ending off with quiet time whilst listening to a story about not what we love but who we love.

It has truly been a joyful and meaningful week together. We are so proud of how our little Smart Squad learners are growing — not only academically, but emotionally too.

With it being Valentines Day this weekend, we hope you have an extra special weekend sharing lots of love and special moments with your families.

Please remember to ensure your child’s homework is done and their books are returned each week and returned to school.  Thank You.

This week in Smart Squad, we became little health heroes! 💚

We spent the week learning all about healthy living and how to take care of our amazing bodies. We talked about washing our hands, brushing our teeth, eating healthy foods, and keeping our bodies strong and active. The children loved sharing their own healthy habits and reminding each other, “Don’t forget the soap!” and “Drink your water!”

Through songs, stories, and lots of giggles, we discovered that being healthy can be fun and exciting.

Of course, learning in Smart Squad always includes playful hands-on fun too! We strengthened our fingers and creativity while playing with playdough, rolling, squashing, and building all sorts of imaginative creations. We also worked together to build puzzles, practicing patience, teamwork, and problem-solving skills like little champions.

It was wonderful to see the children helping one another, celebrating small successes, and learning through play.

We are so proud of how our Smart Squad is growing — happy, healthy, and full of energy every day!

Smart Squad Yoga Day

Our song for the week is “washing your hands like a superhero” we did all the actions whilst incorporating yoga poses.

Poses today we practiced 🌳⛰️, warrior and child

We had a wonderful week learning all about Our Five Senses. We started off the week by exploring our sense of sight. The kids had a blast identifying colours and shapes in a fun scavenger hunt. Then, we dived into the world of sound, with everyone taking turns to guess different noises, from a rustling leaf to Teacher Cecilia’s tambourine.

The real magic happened when we got tactile! The kids explored various textures, from soft feathers to rough sandpaper, and their giggles were contagious.

Finally, we indulged our sense of taste and smell with a mini tasting session, where the kids sampled different tastes from sour worm sweets to lemon juice and bitter coffee. The joy on their faces was priceless!

A highlight of the week was braaing our marshemellows on the mini bonfire. This was such a concrete amazing experience for them to incorporate our senses of touch smell taste sight and hearing.

By the end of the week, the classroom was buzzing with excitement and newfound appreciation for the senses It was a week full of discovery, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

The Squad kids have really settled nicely into their daily routines and classrooms.

They worked in their phonics, maths and time to read workbooks, which we are so excited to show off at next week Wednesday’s class meeting.

Yoga this week with teacher Nicole:

Theme: Our 5 Senses

Song: I am Yoga

Poses: mountain, tree, triangle, forward lunge and warrior

Mindfulness learning to slow down and take a breath when we are feeling anxious, scared or upset.

The learners enjoyed learning about their bodies through fun, hands-on activities. This theme helped build self-awareness, confidence, and healthy habits. The children participated enthusiastically and showed good understanding of how their bodies work and how to care for themselves.

We started working in our phonics books which we completed a worksheet all about the letter “a” we learnt the difference between a capital letter “A” and a lowercase letter “a” and the correct letter formation which is very important.

In our numeracy books we completed a number 1 worksheet where they had to trace write and identify number 1. They also completed a tracing pattern worksheet which we emphasized working from the top of the page to the bottom and from the left to the right.

For our art activity they painted a beautiful picture of themselves which we will keep to display at our art show.

The Squad have been so busy, and the week has just gone by so quickly.

We also had our first “Baker baker” treat this week from Amara. Thank you very much. Please remember on a Friday it is Show and Tell, Library and Baker baker (R5)

IB Principle: Open-Minded – We explained to the Squad that being open-minded means being willing to listen to and consider other people’s ideas and thoughts, even if they’re different from yours.

Imagine you have a friend who loves playing with blocks, but you love playing with dolls. Being open-minded means you can say, “That’s cool! You like blocks, and I like dolls. Let’s play together and find a way to make it fun for both of us!”

The year has flown by, and it’s hard to believe it’s already come to an end! We’re cherishing these last few days with the kids, and they’re having an absolute blast, playing holiday games and free playtime have been a hit, and it’s been amazing to see them laughing and having so much fun together. We have also been working on Christmas Art; the Squad can’t wait to bring it home to show you!

We’re going to miss them so much over the holidays, but we’re excited for them to relax, recharge, and make some amazing memories with their families

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

IB Principle: Communicators – We explained to the Squad the importance of communicating and expressing how they feel by using their words and that they must try their best to listen actively to others. We also explained that they need to make sure they are using the correct tone of voice and think about what they want to say to others before saying it as their words can sometimes hurt others.

Our Shops and Shopping theme is always a hit! We taught the kids practical skills that blend learning with fun. We covered money basics (identifying coins, understanding “buying” and “change”), practiced social interactions (role-playing shopkeepers/customers), and linked maths to life (counting, sorting items). We encouraged creativity (designing their own “shop”), all while connecting school to the real world. The kiddies had an absolute blast choosing their items and filling their trolleys, it was too cute!

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad practiced letter formation on their white boards as well as recapped their letter sounds and sight words. They worked hard in their Time2Read books, decoding words, completed listening and visual comprehensions, and practiced rhyming words. They’re reading their CVC words beautifully – we are super proud of them!

Mathematics: This week, the squad practiced counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s as well as counted to 30 and back down again. They practiced number formation on their white boards and ordinal numbers.

Creative Art: The squad have been working hard on their Christmas art and are excited to bring it home to share with you!

Cc – Cooking / Ff – Food

The Squad had a blast with the theme cooking and food! They learned about various cooking methods and the importance of proper food handling, especially for foods like pork and chicken, to avoid foodborne illnesses. They made their own pizzas, where they added their own tomato paste, ham, and cheese, and then took this delicious treat home to eat. Well done, Squad!

IB Principle: Open-Minded – We explained to the Squad that being open-minded means being willing to listen to and consider other people’s ideas and thoughts, even if they’re different from yours.

Imagine you have a friend who loves playing with blocks, but you love playing with dolls. Being open-minded means, you can say, “That’s cool! You like blocks, and I like dolls. Let’s play together and find a way to make it fun for both of us!”

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on decoding words using sound buttons in their Time2Read books. Great work Squad! We also recapped letter sounds, CVC words, clapping in syllables as well as practiced letter formation.

Mathematics: This week for maths the squad tackled a worksheet where they had to fill in the number that comes before or after the given number. They grasped this concept well! We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards, as well as in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Creative Art: For art this week the kiddies started creating the most beautiful Christmas Art, they cant wait to take it home to show their family!

Music: We are currently practicing graduation songs, and the squad is singing with all their heart. It is a bittersweet time of the year filled with excitement!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What do you think folks ... does pineapple belong on pizza??
