The children love this theme and we had a great time together! This week we spoke about our 5 senses. Each day we spoke about a different sense and did an activity based on that sense. Here’s what we got up to this week.

Writing & Phonics:  This week we recapped our 3 letters from last week and then introduced the next three letters for the week. We introduced Dd, Ee and Ff. We spoke about objects that begin with those letters. We sang our phonics song and played a game to reiterate our letters learnt. We put objects on the floor and the children had to place those objects on the right letter called out. In handwriting we did some finger warm up activities and then went over the correct formation of those letters on our white boards. Once the children had grasped the concept of the correct formation, we moved onto our writing books where the children traced those three letters using our writing cats.

Maths: In Maths we spoke about patterns. We collected some objects found in nature and created our own Reggio patterns on the mat. We also spoke about the shape of the week and the properties of a square. We then found different square objects in the classroom and traced those in our Maths books. The children then coloured their squares in yellow to reiterate the colour of the week.

Art & Life Skills: We spoke about our 5 senses and how each sense serves a very important purpose. The children made their own ‘Senses’ books and each day we covered one of the 5 senses and did an activity based on that sense in this book. For our sense of smell, we had different spices and essential oils for the children to smell. The children then created their own spice flower painting in their books. For our sense of touch, we had a “feelings box” where the children had to place their hand inside and describe what they felt. We spoke about different textures and then the children had to choose different textures to stick inside their senses book. For our sense of hearing, we played different sounds and the children had to use their listening ears to identify the sound. They then cut, coloured and stuck an ear inside their senses book and created their own little bells to stick on top of the ear. The children really enjoyed our last sense; our sense of taste. We brought in different foods for the children to try and they had to decide if it was salty, sweet, sour, bitter or spicy. The children were then given magazines and had to cut and stick their favourite types of food in their senses book.

It has been a great week!

See you all next week.

Next week’s theme is: Health and Hygiene

Taking in the beauty!

For our sense of sight, we went for a walk around the school and took in all the beauty. The children had to then draw their favourite thing they saw on their walk inside their book.

Another week of ACTION packed activities in our Hopper classroom has flown by. Our Happy Hoppers had a fun week learning and engaging in classroom discussions about our 5 senses.

To start off our week, we worked on our letter of the week “B” BEES. We turned the letter “B” into a bumblebee! First the children coloured the letter in yellow, which is our colour of the week. They then finger painted black stripes onto it. Once that had dried, we added wings, feelers and googly eyes. Safe to say they came out absolutely adorable!

Throughout the week we worked on a progressive art piece where the children created a “Five Senses” puppet. We started with a discussion about each of our five senses and the purpose they serve, following that we coloured in our eyes, nose, ears and mouth. We then painted our paper plates and stamped our handprints. At the end of the week we put our puppets together. They kiddies chose where they wanted to stick their facial features, hands and hair. They had so much fun making these puppets and loved telling their teachers that the eyes are for the sense of sight, nose for the sense of smell, ears for the sense of hearing, mouth for the sense of taste and that the hands are for the sense of touch! We just love it when our Hoppers can tell us all about what they are learning about during Ring Time!

To end off the week, we explored our sense of touch with a bucket filled with some yellow jelly slime. While feeling around in the bucket, they spoke about what it felt like, what it smelt like and what it looked like. Some of the kiddies really liked this sensory activity and others where not too keen on feeling the squishy slime!

Our theme next week is: Health and Hygiene

Have a safe and lovely weekend!

Yummy... and not so yummy!

At Cooking this week with Chef Buso, our Hoppers did a little taste test exercise where they had to guess what they were tasting. We tried to use some quirky flavours to make it interesting and it sure was super fun to see the silly faces that they pulled! They tasted: mayonnaise, tomato sauce, salt, sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and syrup.

This week has been such a great one! It has been so nice and warm and sunny! We started the week off by discussing our five senses and how we use each one differently. The children closed their eyes while Teacher Clarissa made little noises and they had to hear and guess what sounds she was making. The Crew also enjoyed sticking their hands in a pillowcase (although slightly nervously!) where they then chose a toy with their eyes closed and tried to feel and guess the object. So much fun!

We decided to take a different approach with the kiddies when discussing their senses and so introduced them to braille and sign language! The children stuck diamante onto dots which in braille resembles their name. They had so much fun running their fingers over the bumps and “feeling’’ their names. During snack and lunch, the kiddies were asked what their food tastes like? Salty or sweet?

During cooking we got to smell and taste all different types of foods. Some yucky, some yummy! They all enjoyed this!

We hope you have a great weekend!

Helpful Tip for the Week!

Saying “please’’ and “thank you’’ to our teachers and friends is very important in the classroom. We believe in treating our friends with care – we love them and they are special to us. We don’t shout at our friends and our motto is: SHARING IS CARING!

This is always such a fun week, enjoyed by both teachers and Bugs! Sensory exploration is such an important part of childhood as it encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It builds nerve connections to the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills.

When it comes to sensory exploration, nature is the best there is to offer!

Our Bugs had so much fun engaging their tactile sense by getting extremely messy this week, first with mezina and water mix, and then some fun messy art with paint mixed with rice. They also got to feel different objects and tell Teacher Sheryl if they were hard or soft, rough or smooth and cold or hot.

To engage their auditory sense, we had loads of fun with musical instruments, playing them loud and soft, hard and soft.

Teacher Gemma has really been missing her Busy Bugs and can’t wait to get back into class with them. A HUGE thank you to Teacher Sheryl for stepping up and taking the Bugs class.

Yummy ... and not so yummy!

Our favourite activity of the week focused on the gustatory sense, the sense of taste, which we combine with the olfactory sense, the sense of smell. The Bugs each got to first smell, and then taste salt, cinnamon, sugar and our favourites, vinegar, and lemon juice. The faces we see are absolutely priceless!

What a wonderful week we have had exploring our senses! We discussed all of our different senses and how important they are to us.

We asked questions like: When you wake up in the morning what are the first things you can See? Hear? Smell? Touch? Taste?

For our art activities we made binoculars from toilet paper rolls and painted them black. and then later on in the week we used our binoculars and went on a nature walk to see what we could see. This was a wonderful experience and it tied into our theme very well as we used all of our senses on our walk.

We also made a paper plate shaker out of a small paper plate. We folded it in half, put some bottle caps inside it and stapled it together.  On Wednesday the Pups had so much fun finger painting as a group. This was a very enjoyable free activity which the kiddies seemed to love.

Yoga class was a big hit again this week. The Pups just loved their time with Teacher Nicole.

As you can see, the Pups have had a very busy week working, playing and most importantly having fun! We can’t wait to see all the beautiful little Pups faces next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

See you on Monday.

Listening and Looking!

Our favourite time of the day was definitely story time.

We read the Little Blue Train and The Gingerbread Man.
