IB Principle: Balanced – We explained to the Squad how important it is to take care of their physical, emotional and mental well-being such as, eating healthy food, exercising and getting enough sleep as it helps us feel happy and calm.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on their sight words and then used these words to write sentences in their workbooks using the cat method. We are so pleased with how well they are progressing with their handwriting, focusing on finger spacing and placing the letters in the correct part of the “cat”. They also decoded words using sound buttons in their TimetoRead books. Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week the Squad worked on a number sequencing activity where they identified missing numbers up to 10 in a snake-like pattern. For example, given the sequence 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, they filled in the gaps with the numbers 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10 to complete the sequence. Well done, Squad! We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards, as well as in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Creative Art: The Squad had an awesome time creating their own space scenes! They coloured in planets and an astronaut (representing themselves), then cut them out and pasted them onto black paper to make their artwork really shine. It was amazing to see their creativity take off – they totally felt like they were blasting into space! We have also been working on Art Expo pieces, and they are really coming together. We can’t wait for you to see them!

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our annual concert – the children are singing their hearts out. Keep it up.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Space is always such an exciting and interesting theme, and there is just so much to explore and expand on. The Crew already had a good understanding of space, and it was lovely to dive deeper into the details together. Our ring times were extra-long this week because there was so much to talk about, and the Crew were full of questions and excitement.

We learnt that the Sun is actually a star and that all the stars we see twinkling in the night sky are really distant suns. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are known as the rocky planets because they have a solid surface, while Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gas giants, made mostly of gas and liquid. Saturn’s famous rings are made up of rocks, dust and ice. Venus is the hottest planet due to the thick layer of gas surrounding it, trapping in the heat like a blanket. We also learnt that our galaxy is called the Milky Way.

Concert practice is going full steam ahead. Each day the Crew are up on stage, giving it their all and making sure they know their moves and their words. We are incredibly proud of them. We’ve been encouraging them to just have fun, shine bright and enjoy the moment. We can’t wait for you to see how much they’ve grown in confidence.

This week for art, we made colourful rocket ships which turned out beautifully. These are being kept for our Art Expo and we’re sure you’re going to love them. We also coloured in some space-themed sheets and did a rocket sequencing activity where we ordered rockets from biggest to smallest.

To practice number recognition, we played a comet-themed matching activity, which the Crew really enjoyed. We also focused on name tracing and name writing to strengthen those fine motor skills. It’s been such a joy to watch how confidently the Crew are starting to write their names independently.

In celebration of Mandela Day on Friday, we spoke about who Nelson Mandela was and why he is so important to South Africa. The Crew made beautiful Ndebele Huts inspired by traditional patterns and colours. It was a lovely way to honour the day and talk about kindness, leadership and unity.

During music, we learnt the Planets of the Solar System song which helped us remember the order of the planets.

This week’s FunFit Sport session with Coach Trevor was all about soccer. The children practiced dribbling the ball, weaving between cones, and aiming for the goal. The encouragement they gave one another was heartwarming and so sweet to witness.

Yoga with the Curious Crew was a gentle and grounding session. We focused on spinal twists to help with flexibility and mobility. Our yoga sequence this week followed our “Space Rocket Yoga” song. We ended with five rounds of butterfly, pufferfish and candle breathing to help center ourselves.

Overall, it’s been a truly wonderful week. The Crew are thriving, and the excitement is building as we count down to concert day. Just one week to go!

Exploring Space what a fun adventure for our Hoppers to learn about.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen the twinkling stars? Space is a big, exciting place full of wonders, and even preschoolers can start exploring it with their imagination!

What Is Space?

Space is everything beyond our planet Earth. It’s where the stars, planets, the Moon, and the Sun live. It’s super big and super quiet—there’s no air in space, so you can’t hear anything!

Meet the Sun

The Sun is a big ball of fire that gives us light and keeps us warm. It’s a star, and it’s very important because it helps plants grow and gives us daytime.

Hello, Moon!

The Moon is Earth’s special friend. Sometimes it looks like a circle, and other times it looks like a slice of banana! The Moon shines at night because it reflects the Sun’s light.

Say Hi to the Planets! There are 8 planets that go around the Sun, just like Earth. Here are a few fun ones:

Mercury – the smallest and closest to the Sun.

Venus – super hot and bright.

Earth – that’s our home!

Mars – the red planet.

Saturn – has beautiful rings!

Astronauts and Rockets

Astronauts are space explorers! They wear cool suits and ride in rockets to visit space. They float because there’s no gravity to hold them down—like flying!

 Fun Space Facts

Stars twinkle in the sky.

Some planets have moons—Jupiter has over 90!

We had a lot of fun with this theme and really tapped into our imagination chatting about space. The Hoppers learnt so much about Space. We did some fun activities like catching a star with tweezers hidden in a basket of beads. This is such a wonderful fine motor activity. We also tried to copy and create our own planets with loose parts; this was great fun.

Our Hoppers love dancing to songs and loved learning the words of the planet song. After we listened to the planet song the children were all hyped up and excited to start their planet artworks project.

We did some toothbrush painting with white paint on black paper and afterwards we coloured in a picture of an astronaut and then cut it out and pasted it on the black paper. We also made a toilet roll space rocket. The Hoppers had so much fun creating and painting their rockets. The Hoppers have a favorite activity now and that is to work at our table with the light. This was fun as we did some important fine motor activities on this table like tracing this week.

We focused on our letter of the week. We read all about Noisy Nick and all the noise he likes to make. The rest of the week we finished off our art and watched some space videos and some astronauts in space, and even a space rocket launch. This was so exciting to watch, and our Hoppers loved it.

For FunFit sports this week, the Hoppers did an obstacle course with Coach Trevor using the jungle gym, they loved this and did so well when they got to the monkey bars. Well done, Hoppers.

Yay for Yoga! Wheels on the bus yoga. Ankle rotations/rolls help improve blood circulation in the ankle and legs. It is also excellent for improving ankle mobility and flexibility. Our various poses included Open leg forward bend. Triangle Pose, Child Pose, Spinal twists and one leg balance poses.

Concert practise is in full swing now and we are super excited for our big day.

What an appropriate theme considering that our concert is Space themed and coming up next week!

We had so much learning about our concert theme and singing all of the awesome space songs we will be singing in the concert!

Our Busy Bugs absolutely loved learning about space and all of the aspects involved. We spoke about the planets, meteors, stars, the milky way, astronauts and rockets. We watched lots of videos teaching us about all of these things and looked at loads of awesome pictures taken by satellites. We learned that we live on planet Earth, and this is the only planet that is known to have enough surface water to be inhabited by humans. We learned that Saturn has a giant ring of floating ice and rock chunks, and that Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system.

We spoke about astronauts and their space gear. They must wear special suits and helmets while up in space because humans cannot breathe that far up. We spoke about gravity and how it makes objects, including people, stay on the ground. If there was no gravity, we would float away- the Bugs thought this was very funny! We also spoke about the special food that astronauts eat.

For art this week, we made stunning hanging planets by watercolour painting a piece of paper and cutting out 2 circles. Our Bugs got to sensory play in a bin of shredded paper, which we then used to fill our circles and create a 3D planets.

We also did a loose parts, alien activity. The Bugs were given a piece of playdough that they got to squish and manipulate to create a shape of their choice. They were then given a selection of items including googly eyes, pipe cleaners, beads of all different shapes and sizes and pompoms. They got to choose how much of each they wanted to use and create their very own, adorable aliens. Some our Bugs’ formed the basic shape of a face, putting the eyes, “nose”, “mouth” and “arms” in the correct placings, and others really embraced their imagination and went wild! We love every single one of these creations so much, because we loved watching our Bugs use their creativity and imagination to create exactly what they wanted to.

We hope that you all have a lovely weekend, and we will see you next week for another exciting theme!

This weeks’ question:

In your opinion, is Pluto still a planet?

This Week’s Space-Themed Adventures 🚀🌌

What an exciting week we’ve had exploring the wonders of outer space! Our theme this week was all about the solar system, and we had so much fun learning about the different planets—their unique features and the colors that make each one special. From the fiery red of Mars to the cool blues of Neptune, the children were fascinated by how diverse our cosmic neighbors are.

For our art project, we got extra creative and made our very own telescopes using recycled toilet rolls. After painting them a deep space black, we added sparkly stickers of stars and planets, turning them into magical space viewers ready for stargazing adventures!

We also worked very hard on preparing for our upcoming concert. The children have been practicing their songs and routines with so much energy and dedication. We’re all incredibly excited and can’t wait to perform for you soon—it’s going to be a show to remember!

We took advantage of the lovely weather and enjoyed an outdoor activity, focusing on balance and coordination. The children had a blast walking across the balancing beams, building not only physical strength but also confidence and focus.

Yoga Time with Playful Pups 🐶🧘♂️

This week during Playful Pups Yoga Time, our focus was on spinal twists. These gentle but effective stretches help to increase spinal mobility and flexibility by encouraging the rotation of the spine. The children really enjoyed discovering how twisting and turning their bodies can make them feel stronger and more limber.

We also introduced a brand new yoga sequence set to our fun and energizing song, “Space Rocket Yoga”. This imaginative flow took us on a journey through space, stretching and posing like astronauts preparing for launch!

To wind down our session, we finished with five rounds of calming breathwork exercises—the butterfly breath, pufferfish breath, and candle breath. These mindful breathing techniques are a favorite among the children and help them relax, focus, and feel grounded after a full day of activity.

Space is such an interesting theme topic that we will be carrying it over two weeks. The Squad spoke about the different planets and we we’ve learnt the distance from the sun to each planet by saying this: My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Energetic (Earth) Mother (Mars) Jumped (Jupiter) Straight (Saturn) Under (Uranus) Nine (Neptune) Planets (Pluto – Dwarf Planet).

IB Principle: Critical Thinkers – the squad spoke about how we can expand our thinking so that we are able to ask those difficult questions. Incorporating both left and right hemispheres so that we are able to be logical and creative. We need to process the negative so that we can enjoy the positive. We taught this by explaining that there are good and bad decisions, and it is okay to make mistakes, but it is how we learn from them and build from those experiences.

Writing and Phonics: The next four sight words “come”, “we”, “of” and “see” – we also went through the sight words to date. Last week we also focused on our next word family which was the “an” family. We write sentences using these words and it was so wonderful to see how the Squad are able to form their own sentences together as a team such as “the man has a pan and a fan”! This week we introduced the “am” family such as “ham, dam, jam, ram”. Their use of finger spacing is improving. Congratulations Smart Squad. We are so proud of you.

Mathematics: Last week we taught the squad how to tally and this week we expanded on this by incorporating a graph and then using a tally to express these digits. We are pleased with how well they were able to retain the information taught last week and use that to complete the worksheet. We also completed some subtraction to 10 sums – we really are pleased with how quickly they grasped this concept.

Creative Art: We painted patterns this week but first worked on our placement and proportion on a blank page. We also expressed different patterns building 2 or more using shapes, lines and drawings. We are using these to make a wonderfully large slithering space snake that will be displayed at Art Expo. We also created a rocket ship using toilet rolls and paper cones. So cute!

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our annual concert – the children are singing their hearts out. Keep it up.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Space is always such an exciting and interesting theme which we can expand so much on. The Crew have a good understanding of space and it was great to go into the finer detail about space. This week our ring times have been extra-long because there is just so much information on space.

The Sun is a star and the stars we see up in the night sky are far away ‘suns’ in the sky. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are rocky planets, they are solid, and Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are planets made of liquid and gas.

The rings around Saturn are made up of rocks, dust and ice. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system because of the gas that surrounds the planet and traps hot air under the gas cloud. Our galaxy is called The Milky Way.

Go through some of these facts with your children to see how many they can remember from ringtime discussions. We also watched a few YouTube Videos on astronauts up in space and how they wash their hair, brush their teeth, how they go to the toilet and the kind of exercises they have to do to keep fit.

Over the past few weeks, we have been hard at work with concert practice. Each day the Crew have been up on stage making sure they know their moves and their words for this special occasion! We are SUPER proud of them and are really holding thumbs that when they are up their looking down on so many people that they are still just as confident and full of beans ready to show off to their friends and family. We have told the Crew to just have fun and give us big smiles when they are up there!

Here is a breakdown of some of the activities we have completed in the last 2 weeks. The Crew had to complete a colour by numbers solar system. This activity is not only about colouring in but ‘reading’, number recognition and planning.

We did a little hexagon and counting activity where the Crew were instructed, in a hive of hexagons, they had to draw 9 bees. Again, they had to pay attention to what they were doing and count as they went along. Believe it or not a lot of the Crew drew many more than 9 bees. LOL.

We also completed a visual perceptual worksheet. The Crew had to first colour in a picture of our solar system. Then they had to cut the picture out, which was divided into 6 pieces. And stick it back together like a puzzle. One of the kiddies really struggled with this and became teary and upset that her puzzle wasn’t coming together as she wanted it to because she stuck the pieces down first before organising them to see which ones fit together. This was a great learning opportunity! I reassured her that it was ok to be upset but she can learn from this and next time know how to plan better.

Learning opportunities like this are gems! Life lessons! It’s ok to make mistakes and that things don’t always work out like you planned but you can learn from these mistakes and now you will know a better way to approach this type of challenge in the future.

We hope you enjoy the Concert! We are ready and super excited!

Over the past two weeks, our adventure into the wonders of space has been an absolute blast! In the first week, we just touched on space because we were so busy practicing and preparing for the concert.

Space is one of the school’s favourite themes! There is so much room for exploration and learning. However, explaining space to a 2-year-old is quite a challenge. It’s hard for them to grasp that they live in a country called South Africa, let alone on a planet called Earth, in a galaxy that’s bigger than they could ever imagine! So, we focused on things they can see and understand, like stars, rockets, the moon, and astronauts. We talked about the planets and the solar system, and we feel that they really grasped the concepts we were introducing!

In our art sessions, we worked on some art expo pieces and also our birthday art. We engaged in fine motor activities like playing with playdough, making little worms out of the dough. The Pups had so much fun squishing and rolling the dough, and it was a great way for them to strengthen their little fingers.

In our FunFit sports sessions, we played a game where we had to throw 10 balls into a bucket using only one hand. The Pups did amazingly well! They were so focused and determined, and it was wonderful to see their hand-eye coordination improve. While working on our counting, we counted all the way up to 10 and then blasted off into space, just like real astronauts! The Pups loved shouting “Blast off!” and imagining they were zooming through the stars.

We also sang “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” while lying on the carpet and making stars with our hands. It was a magical moment, seeing their little faces light up as they sang and made star shapes with their fingers.

We are so excited to see all of you on Saturday for our big concert day! The Pups have worked so hard, and they can’t wait to show you all the wonderful things they’ve learned and practiced. See you there!

Moral conscious theme: Giving – This week we focused our discussion on the gift of giving. We explained to the Squad that it is such a special feeling when we know that we have helped someone in need whether it be by giving our time or giving them an item that they need. We also discussed the less fortunate and how we should be grateful for the things that we have.

The Squad made sleeping bags out of newspaper and plastic this week for Nelson Mandela Day. They really enjoyed this so much.

Writing and Phonics: Last week we focused on recapping our sight words and letter sounds. We discussed the term ‘blending’ and went through our blending sounds such as ‘th’ and ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. The Squad are really getting the hand of reading independently. We then completed a worksheet where they needed to read the sentences and then rewrite them using the cat method. This week we looked through magazines and looked for sight words by circling them. We also played a game on the board where the sight word was written, and the children were asked one by one to go and spot that word. We were pleased with their progress.

Our sight words to date are as follows: dog, me, is, big, I, and, am, an , it, see, to, come, yes, not, get, on, the, can, dad, go, here, so, do, he, up, she, we, at, mom, has, no, a, in, look, but, cat, of, my, DAY (new sight word)

Mathematics: Last week we went over counting to 30 and back. We also focused on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. This is a tricky concept for the Squad, so we incorporate showing the children visually and by singing it out by rote method. This concept can be introduced at home by writing it on a piece of paper and placing it in a location your child sees every day.

This week we played a game of bingo and the children had to circle if they had the number. They loved this! We also had two worksheets to complete which was an addition and subtraction worksheet whereby the children had to fill in the number sentence and provide the answer. Well done!

Creative Art: The Squad completed three art activities over the two weeks. The first one was to decorate their own planet – name it and then create their own alien. The second was to make their very own rocket which was made using an empty toilet roll, sewing reels and paper. The last was to decorate a moon face. All of which came out so beautifully we are only sending one home and keeping the other two for art expo.

Music and Cooking: For cooking we made space cake balls. The Squad mixed condensed milk, coconut shavings, milo, milk and crushed Marie biscuits. The result was delicious! For music we were practicing our concert songs.

We would like to thank you all for attending our annual school concert it was a blast and the children really did a spectacular job! We were so proud of them!

FunFit Sports: The children completed an obstacle course whereby they jumped, dribbled a climbed through different equipment. They had so much fun. Photos are in the blog.

This week in the Curious Crew class , we had a double week of possibly the best theme ever !! SPACE . We took theme discussion very seriously this week , we took our time learning all the planets names and the order they’re in in the solar system.

We watched education videos on how the solar system works, and we learnt about black holes and stars too.

It was amazing to see the knowledge that each child has on space ! .

We also learnt facts on planets , and learnt so much with just the videos we watched.

For art this week , we did a number of amazing fun art pieces, we focused on a colour by number colouring in picture , we did a cute star constellation worksheet too , we also did a super fun puzzle worksheet , where each child had to colour in the planets , cut it out and put it back together as a puzzle , everyone did amazing , they concentrated so hard and ended up completing this task to the best of their abilities .

YOGA

B*I*N*G*O

Yoga bingo this week was a total hit.

This game teaches phonics,  sounds as well as learning to listen, auditory memory, picture/word recognition, and concentration. By reading out a word, the kids had to find the correct picture and place a red marker on it. The 1st team to get all the pictures and shout BINGO were the yogi stars of the day

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week sports was one heck of a fun session for everyone. Coach Trevor loves putting the crew to the test when he sets out obstacle courses for us to complete. With a timer too !!!

He loves challenging our kiddos and boy our kiddos complete these challenges with ease.

On Thursday was our baking day !!  we made the most delicious galaxy cupcakes. The kids just loved decorating their cupcakes with icing and sprinkles and they have been so excited to show all the parents their amazing work .

Well done Curious Crew.

What a fun , educational , super exciting week it has been for our class.
