What a week we have had! The Busy Bugs absolutely loved the hands on (and delicious) approach to the theme this week!

We discussed all of the exciting aspects of the kitchen from the utensils we use, to the equipment that make cooking possible, the food that we cook and the extra little bits we add for flavour! We learnt about a few basic kitchen rules like:

  • Never play with or use a knife without adult supervision
  • Do not touch a hot stove, oven or kettle
  • Don’t touch pots or pans that are being used on the stove
  • Always wash your hands before touching the food you are cooking with

This week we made 3 delicious goodies for the Bugs to eat.

On Tuesday, we made the most scrumptious mini muffin omelets. We cracked the eggs into a big bowl and each Bug got a chance to whisk them together. They got to cut a small piece of ham, tomatoes and even grated some cheese. We then scooped the egg into our muffin pans, sprinkled whatever topping we wanted on our omelets and put them in the oven to bake. We ate these for snack, paired up nicely with a half of a toasted cheese.

On Thursday, Chef Nombuso did our cooking lesson with us. We made the most delicious marmite and cheese pinwheels. The Bugs got to flour and roll the puff pastry, spread marmite all over it and then sprinkle cheese (A LOT of cheese!) and stick them in the oven to take home. We hope you all enjoyed these!

Our last cooking fun was on Friday where we put a different spin on standard cookies. We made standard cookie mix, but then added jelly powder in for flavour and texture. The Bugs loved these!

Can you believe we only have one week left of school! It’s hard to believe how quickly this year has gone! We have loved every second spent with these Bugs and are going to miss them dearly next year!

We hope you are all ready for the exciting, fun, craziness that will be next week! We have so many amazing Christmas activities lined up!

Adventures in the kitchen!

We heard lots of fun stories about the adventures the Bugs have had in the kitchen at home and of all the delicious goodies they have cooked and baked.

Cooking is such an important skill for children to have as it teaches them responsibility, safety awareness, quality family bonding time… even basic Maths. And we are so happy to hear that so many of our Bugs get the opportunity to spend this time with their families in the kitchen.

This week the Playful Pups learnt all about cooking and food. We sat in a circle and spoke about what our favourite things are to eat. There were many answers of apples, bananas and chicken. Clearly we have some healthy Playful Pups in this classroom … hehe!

We spoke about what we use to cook and make food, and how we usually have to use a very hot oven and stove which we must never touch! We made our own sandwiches to have with our scrambled eggs, they all enjoyed buttering their bread very much. We also made our own healthy food plate with fruits, veg, chicken and eggs. We all helped make some delicious jelly which we put in the fridge and waited for it to set so that we could enjoy it after lunch.

Any other free time for activities we had, we spent making some of our Christmas art as our theme next week is Christmas! We are so excited about that and the Pups are talking about it already. Please don’t forget your child’s Christmas box so that we can put all their art and goodies inside it.

I can’t believe next week is the last week of school! I am not ready to say goodbye to these sweet little faces!

Enjoy the pictures from the week, there are some cuties. Have a wonderful weekend.

Who helps out in the kitchen!

I asked the Pups who helps mommy cook dinner?

Emily answered very proudly: “me!” … and then they all joined in!

What an absolutely amazing second last week of school. As things are nearing the end it is a blessing to see how much the Crew have grown since the beginning of the year. There have been so many special memories made this week.

On Monday the Crew made their very own ice lollies, created with yoghurt and fruit bits. They had so much fun making the mixture and pouring it into moulds. We also spent the day working through our shapes (focusing on 3D specifically as next year they will cover this more in detail). On Tuesday we decided to make Principal Anita a lovely birthday card for her birthday. It was so special to see how much they love her and all the wonderful memories they have of her. Later on in the day we enjoyed our frozen ice lollies in the garden – they were delicious!

Cooking week is always fun for the children to be involved in making something and feeling like ‘big kids’! On Thursday we created our very own snack! Nutella and fruit on bread! They were so excited and made wonderful masterpieces! We definitely have some Picassos in the class! We tackled numbers, their formation is very important going to Grade R. The Crew have progressed well with recognising their numerals and we are so proud of them! The weather on Thursday was perfect for movies and popcorn! Yay!

For homework this week, if you could practice letter sounds – ask your child to sing the alphabet song and then go through the letters asking them to sound out the letters. They will surprise you!

Have a lovely weekend and see you all on Monday!

We went on an outing!

Wednesday was our Curious Crew outing day. It was truly a beautiful day, the weather was great and the children had a blast! They were all so well-behaved and listened so well. There were many swings and even a big (fabric sac) swing! The Crew had such a jol! We are so blessed with the children that we had this year! We are going to miss them so much!

Can you believe that we only have 1 week left of school!

We started off this week listening to each other’s weekend news. We introduced this week’s theme: Cooking and Food. We spoke about what our favourite food is and how we think it is made. We discussed the different food that we have during Christmas and other special occasions.

Writing and Phonics: This week we focused on our “ub” and “ug” word family. We learnt our new words and did the “ub” and “ug” worksheet. We also did our “ub” and “ug” word family sentences without our writing cats. We are so proud at how beautifully they are writing all on their own!

Maths: We recapped addition and subtraction and did some practical examples before practicing addition and subtraction sums in our Maths books. We also recapped mental mathematics using our fingers to count.

Life Skills: We spoke about appreciating food and those who feed us. We spoke about why it is important to not waste food and to be thankful to those that make our food.

Creative Art: We continued with our Christmas art to get us into the holiday spirit and practiced graduation too!

It has been a great week.

See you all next week.

Such a beautiful evening!

What a success our Graduation was! We hope you loved it as much as we did.

We are so proud of our Smart Squad children and will miss each and every one of them!

Last week was a quieter week. With lots of absentees and children feeling a little under the weather, we took it easy and just followed the Pups’ lead. In the Playful Pup class, you have to be able to go with the flow and listen to what the children are needing, and sometimes that is many more cuddles and individual attention, lots of free play and giving them the chance to talk to me about what they are feeling. They are all starting to talk beautifully and their vocabulary has grown tremendously. These Pups are now able to talk about how they are feeling and I’m so proud of them as I really try to encourage that here in my classroom.

During ring time we chatted all about holidays and travelling and what they get up to when on holiday. They seemed to get very excited when I mentioned the word holiday! Somehow our conversations lead to our next theme – Christmas. The excitement of Christmas coming is palpable. Such a magical time for them!

We then had Fun Fit sports with Coach Brad who challenged our balance and jumping skills. We also had yoga and even finished with a dance party! The Pups had so much fun.

We went on holiday!

We went on a safari (nature walk) and tried to spot all the birds and animals we could see … we even used our binoculars which we made.

We took a trip to the beach front (sand pit) to collect and look for sea shells.

Hh – Holiday

Can you believe that we are almost at the end of the year!

This theme really gets us in the holiday spirit and we got so excited talking about our favourite type of holiday and where we would like to go this December.

Writing and Phonics: This week we focused on our “ot” word family. We learnt our new words and did the “ot” worksheet. We also did our “ot” word family sentences without our writing cats. We can’t believe how far our Smart Squad children have come from the beginning of the year. The children also drew a self-portrait and reflected on how much they have grown throughout the year.

Maths: We recapped addition and subtraction and did some practical examples before practicing addition and subtraction sums in our maths books.

Life skills: We spoke about what loyalty means. We spoke about making promises and making sure we keep those promises.

Creative: We started with some Christmas art to get us in the holiday spirit and continued to practice for our graduation.

Hh – Holiday

We had so much fun learning about the different places we can travel to last week. The Crew have such lovely memories and can tell their teachers about their holidays. Thank you for being so enthusiastic guys!

We completed three worksheets this week, two were letter based and the third was number orientated. The Crew had to follow simple and complex instructions (this is an assessment criteria), they all did really well! This week we read three Letter Land books for story time. Namely; the letter of the week ‘h’, the letter ‘i’ and the letter ‘g’. We are introducing the concept of before and after so for example, ‘which letter comes before ‘h’ in the alphabet.’ This also falls under assessment criteria. The Crew have participated so well this week with new terms and concepts. Congratulations boys and girls!

The worksheets included different types of activities, they had to colour, trace, find, circle and match letters. They have all come such a long way! The number worksheet was a counting and matching one the Crew had to colour the picture, count how many items and then associate it with the correct number. Great work!

For art this week, we made our very own passports! They found it so interesting! We explained that we get boarding passes and we need passports to travel. They also watched a few short clips of people going on planes and how the process works being in an airport.

One of the things we have introduced these past few weeks is Sight Words. at the end of each Letter Land book, there is a sight word such as ‘cat’ or ‘mat’ etc. They have turned this into a little game where they sound out each letter to form the word. Wow, they surprised us with how quickly they get the word right! Have some fun with them and let them try some sight words at home.

Our year-end fun day at Eco Tree Parks is coming up, please could you return the indemnity forms! The Crew are getting so excited and we are going to have an absolutely amazing time.

Have a fabulous week ahead!

Hh – Holiday

This theme got us thinking of warm seas, ocean breeze and holiday vibes … by the end of the week we were all itching to go on holiday!

During ring time we spoke about our favourite travel destinations. We also spoke about the 7 continents and named them. Throughout the week we reiterated this through a song. This is a tricky thing to understand but by the end of the week the children started to get the idea.

We spoke about all the necessary things that we need to take on holiday.  We also explained the use of a passport. We created our own passports and did a role-play travel excursion. We told all the children that we were traveling from Africa to South America for a quick view of the Machu Picchu Temple.  We then flew over North America and Europe, landing in Australia to visit the Kangaroos and Koala Bears, then back to Africa. We would need our passports to go out of South Africa and get into another country and we would have to wait in a line to go through border control. In order to get to these places, we of course had to fly, so we all strapped in and “flew” around the school until we reached our destinations. The children loved this role play activity and were able to understand why a passport is important.

We worked on our fine motor skills and pencil grip by writing our own names in the passports and we did a travel worksheet where the children had to trace over the word “travel”. Once they finished tracing they had to colour in their “globe”.

 It was a great week!

“Cos’ we are flying in an aeroplane, looking out the window, watching the clouds go by. Flying in an aeroplane, looking out the window, up so very high!”

Last week we learnt all about the places you can go to for a holiday, and how we get there. We spoke about bush holidays, beach holidays and overseas holidays, what we can see when we go to these places and the different ways we can get there. There are local places you can go to that are nice and close, like Harties, Sun City, the Kruger or the Vaal … these are place that we can drive to. Then there are places that are a little bit further away but can still be reached by car (or airplane) like Durban and Cape Town, and then there are the places that you have to take an airplane to, these places are very far and are mostly in other countries like Disney World, Paris and so many more!

We asked our Bugs if any of them have ever been on an airplane before. Most of them answered yes, but of course we weren’t 100% sure… hee hee! We spoke about the man or lady who flies the airplane and learnt that they are called the Pilot and the people who help us find our seats, bring us food and keep us safe are called flight attendants.

We also discussed what items we take on holiday. A suitcase filled with clothes, our toothbrush and toothpaste and of course, a camera to take lots of awesome pictures to show everyone.

Which brings us to our art this week. Our Bugs got to colour in cameras and then go on a nature walk to “take photos” of everything they could see. We then “printed” these photos by asking the Bugs to cut out pics of their favourite holiday from a magazine, and to then stick them under their cameras. The Bugs absolutely had so much fun doing this activity and it was also an amazing fine motor skill builder for them.

Thank you to everyone who sent items for show and tell, we loved seeing all of the exciting things your Bugs brought to share.

We hope you all had a lovely, relaxed weekend!

We were so impressed!

We asked all of the Bugs if they knew which type of car their Mommies and Daddies drive and we were very impressed to hear that most of them not only new if it was a “big car” or a “small car” but also what make and model they are!

We asked them who usually drove the car when they went on holiday and most of them answered “Daddy.”
