IB Principle:  Knowledgeable – this week we spoke about what it means to be knowledgeable. We discussed that it is about exploring concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In other words it is about learning about how the world works.

Writing and Phonics: We have been continuing to roll out with our Time2Read programme which focuses on using “sound buttons” whereby the children place dots under eat letter and then they “push” this button to make the sound. This assists them with sounding out CVC words. Keep a look out for their buttons under their letters at home when they are practicing.

Mathematics: We have been assessing Mathematics this week and practicing drawing our 2D shapes. We were pleased with how many shapes the Squad can draw and some even without visual aid! Keep it up guys!

Creative Art: We created recycled horses this week, using toilet rolls, wool, googly eyes, straws and corks. They turned out to be unique and adorable – we are keeping these for our Art Expo and cannot wait for you to see them.

FunFit Sports: Coach Trevor completed gross motor assessments with the Squad this week.

Cooking: Teacher Hayley explained the importance of knowing which animal provides us with the different foods that we can eat. Such as a pig can give us bacon and ribs. A cow can give us beef. We then created our own snack that the Squad dished out independently.

We also had some fun and made our very own cheese. Well done Squad!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Even though this was a short week in the Curious Crew class. We got through some really cool and fun activities!

Farming animals: Why do we farm animals Curious Crew? To eat them. This was not a concept that made the Crew squeamish. We went through all the meats and what animal they belonged to as well as what other food and non-food products come from animals. Milk, cheese, yoghurt, wool, feathers and eggs.

The week started off with the Crew’s first Reggio Emilia Loose Parts art project. The Crew had in front of them farm animals, small acorns, white pebbles, Jacaranda seed pods and corks. They were instructed to make their own farm using these materials. It was very interesting to see who loved this art piece and who wasn’t quite interested. How they went about setting out their farm yards. Lovely work Crew. We will be doing a Reggio Emilia art piece each week as an intermural activities. Let the imaginary play really begin!

We also decided we wanted to make a concrete art piece to add to our Art expo collection. The Crew made paper plate little chickens where they had to paint feathers onto their chickens but using a fork. They really enjoyed using a different art medium to paint and our chickens’ looks so cute!

Assessments have still be going on, thank you for a full class attendance almost every day this week!

After Wednesdays’ Voting Day we wanted to do a little voting ourselves in the Curious Crew class! We set up a booth and ballads on which is the best farm animal. Each child got a stamped ballad and some ink on their finger nail. They were able to go and cast their vote and once the voting was done, the numbers were tallied up, the best farm yard animal was the Horse. Well done beautiful horse you are the most liked farm yard animal.

After cooking this week we decided to shake it up and make some homemade BUTTER! We took some cream, a jar with 2 pinches of salt and we shook and shook and shook and shook! Each Crew member got to shake it up and once the cream had become so thick and we thought we weren’t able to shake anymore that’s where the magic started to happen. We could see the cream starting to come away from the jar and with lots more shacking the cream became a blob. With more shaking the blob started to separate..YAY finally butter was achieved! The excuse milk was poured into cups and the Crew got to taste the salty milk that was left behind. No one liked it but I love that they most of them gave it a try! The butter we made was used on their sandwiches for snack that day. What an awesome experience to make some butter and get to taste all the elements in the making.

During FunFit Sports this week Coach Trevor got out the cricket bat and balls and Crew enjoyed hitting a few balls. Working on their hand-eye coordination as well as a fun favourite South African game they might grow up to watch and enjoy one day.

In Yoga this week the Crew held onto the magic stick! The kiddies had to use their tummy muscles to hold their arms and legs straight out in a superman pose. This move targets the upper and lower back, abs and hamstrings. It offers great support and strengthens the muscles for bending and reduces the risk of back injury. The task was to hold the stick for 5 seconds, using 1 hand moving the stick to the left and then to the right, finishing off with 5 seconds holding. Well done to all the yogis, this was a challenging workout but with lots of benefits. Physical movement and sports is so important not only in these younger years but throughout your whole life. Keep active, keep moving!

This has been a short but remarkably busy week. We learnt all about farm animals. This is such a wonderful and exciting theme to learn about. The Happy Hoppers loved learning about all the different farm animals and what they eat and drink and where they live on the farm. They also learnt about what mommy, baby and daddy animals are called and what they produce for humans e.g.: wool from sheep.

For our art, this week we did some cork stamping which is a good fine motor activity which strengthens their hand and finger muscles. The Hoppers enjoyed this activity.

We spent a lot of the week doing assessments. The focus this week was to recognise their name without a picture next to it. Please encourage your little one to recognise their name. if you do write their name please remember to write only the first letter as a capital. Please can you also practise some number recognition with your little Hopper, numbers 1 to 10.

Yoga this week the Hoppers had to hold on to a magic stick, the kiddies had to use their tummy muscles to hold their arms and legs straight out in a superman pose. This pose targets the upper and lower back abdominal muscles and hamstrings. The task was to hold the stick for 5 seconds, using 1 hand moving the right finishing off with another 5 seconds.

Funfit sport this week the Hoppers played some cricket. They concentrated on batting and catching. This is a good game to improve eye hand coordination and eye foot coordination and many other skills as well.

Please can you label all your child’s belongings as this is still not happening.

Remember to boost your child’s immune system by giving them good vitamins.

Have a wonderful weekend!!

This is always such a favourite with teachers and children alike! Who doesn’t love a good, loud version of Old Macdonald?! There is so much to discuss and learn and so much to see and do.

This week we learned all about the farm and the farm’s animals. We learned all about the different noises these animals make, and the different names that the boy and girl animals have, such as hen and rooster or sheep and ram. We learned the names of the baby animals, like chick, lamb and piglet! It was such fun pretending to be these animals at ring time! Our children have very vivid imaginations and have a lot of existing knowledge about farm animals.

We played tons of farm animal inspired games this week. We went on a nature walk to visit the horses and feed them some yummy carrots and pet Frankie, and watch the ducks and swans swim on the pan. We made such a gorgeous piece of art this week but because it is just too cute, we are going to keep it for the art expo.

Show and tells this week went so well! Thank you Ayana for bringing your adorable chicken and egg for us to see. We can’t wait for the rest of your turns!

Just a reminder to please label things – everything – even if just with initials. We have had a few cases of jackets and beanies going missing but there are lots of repeat items in the school and sometimes children go home with the same / similar item that they may have at home. It takes a while to work its way through the wash and then even longer for the double to be spotted. If things are labelled it just makes life that much easier! There are many layers that come off during the day and at playtime the children tend to remove their own shoes / socks and jackets as they feel warmer so we cannot always keep track of every item. Once it is returned to our classroom with no name, we often have no idea who it belongs to.

Speaking of shoes and socks, please encourage the children to keep their shoes on in the cold. There will always be the odd shoe or sock that gets taken off but if we could try keep feet warm during the cold winter moths that would be great!

Please also get your concert clothes in ASAP. We got lots of work and fun things to do to them, so the sooner they are in, the better!

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the colder nights where you can snuggle! Please keep safe and germ free!

Next week’s show and tell will be:Caedan and Raiden

This week was short but super busy and filled with fun activities! Our theme was all about farm animals, and the Pups absolutely loved it. We talked about the different sounds that farm animals make and what they like to eat. I was so impressed with how much the Pups knew and how excited they were to share their thoughts and ideas!

For our art activities, we had a bunch of fun projects that the Pups really enjoyed. We finished one of our special art expo pieces (it’s a secret, so shhhh!). There was also lots of messy play, which, of course, the Pups had a blast with. One of the most fun activities was decorating a sheep with icing sugar and adding popcorn for its wool. The smiles on the Pups’ faces as they carefully placed each piece of popcorn were absolutely priceless!

In addition to our art projects, we also practiced our concert songs this week. It was so wonderful to see the little ones dancing and singing with so much joy and energy. They really enjoyed themselves, and their enthusiasm was contagious. I loved seeing them boogie and have a great time!

We also made time for some educational activities. We read stories about farm animals and sang ‘Old MacDonald” probably 10000 times . The Pups did such a great job and learned a lot while having fun.

You make me so proud my Pups!

Wow! What an awesome week we have had of learning and lots of fun. During ring time we enjoyed discussing weekend news, our new theme, colour, letter, number, and shape of the week. We also enjoyed learning why a sphere is a 3D shape and not a 2D shape as well as some of our farm animals.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad worked on sight words such as he, she, look, play, on, no, I, here, is, in, the, me, at, it, we, said, yes. We introduced three new sight words “come”, “for” and “this”. We watched a short video on the Hen and then did sequencing on the order that the story went. We introduced syllables, everyone caught on to this quickly and were able to do the syllables of many different words including their names, well done Squad!

Mathematics: This week we recapped our numbers from 1 to 20 as well as counting in 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. We did subtraction sums by crossing out circles to get our answers. We also did a fun worksheet where we had to determine how many animals were in their herds and which one was “more” or “less”.  We did an addition worksheet where we had to count the number of animals and write the answers.

Life Skills: Persevere and do not brag – We discussed the importance of always trying your best no matter what, even when you fail, you must always try again because you never know what might happen, as well as to stay humble and not make others feel like they are less if they do not win.

Creative Art: We enjoyed painting and making our pigs using paper plates, buttons, and googly eyes. We are also making many art pieces for our art expo; we are so excited and can’t wait for you all to see them!

The squad have really impressed us so far!

Thank you and have a great weekend. See you all on Monday.

This was quite a busy week for the Curious Crew class. We managed to get through a lot of work and we are busy with assessments. We are so proud of the children and they are really performing well!

We started off the week with some assessment prep, focusing on colour patterns and measurement (biggest to smallest) as well as number and letter recognition.

The Crew, loved this week’s theme and during ring-time, Teacher Clarissa asked the children to make their favourite farm animal’s sound when she called their name. Wow, the sounds we heard were so funny! We were all laughing and giggling at each other! We read some more awesome books all about farming animals and what each animal’s purpose is on the farm. We incorporated the moral conscious into this week by reading a story where each farm animal would brag about what they do on the farm and say that they are the best and most important. The story concluded by saying that each animals plays a significant part in order for the farm to run and therefore there is no need to brag.

Another exciting thing we did this week was let the children choose which character they would like to be in the school concert. Every child got the opportunity to choose what they want to be so you will see you have been added to a WhatsApp group of the character your child will be in the concert. So exciting!

We started our letter Challenge this week and look forward to seeing the awesome work the children will be putting into this! Have fun mom and dads and feel free to take pictures and send them to us!

We completed such an amazing art piece this week and you will find some images in the blog of this. The children were asked to create their own farm. This is a Reggio Emelia concept where it brings out the child’s imagination by using different objects to create their masterpiece. Have a look! We were so proud of them!

We completed one more art activity on Thursday, the Crew were asked to colour in their very own baby chick and stick it on a page. They then covered the chick with an ‘egg’ and began to rip open the paper to uncover their special baby chick. They absolutely loved this art piece.

Over the next few weeks, we will be assessing the children – if we could please ask that you make sure that your child is at school so that we are able to assess him/her. Thank you kindly! We hope that you all have a lovely weekend filled with many memories shared together!

Keep warm everyone!

We have had a jam-packed week completing assessments. Please note that there will not be many art pieces going home as the assessments have taken up a lot of our time this week.

We started this week off with a continuation of the farm. We spoke about farm animals and the type of animals we find on a farm.

As we are learning about Farm Animals this week, we decided to teach the children about the life cycle of a chicken! We discussed this concept and watched a video. For our art piece we created the life cycle of a chicken, this was a sequenced art piece which promoted critical thinking, problem solving and fine motor skills. Our Hoppers created such amazing work that we will be keeping them for Art Expo!

For cooking on Wednesday, the children made “pigs in a blanket”, these were scrumptious!

On Friday, Tallyn from Busy Bugs, brought two little lambs for everyone to see. He showed us how he feeds them milk with a baby bottle. Our kiddies absolutely loved this experience!

Please remember to dose up your little ones with extra vitamins, it is getting a lot colder and there are lots of germs going around.

Another great week, with the theme being On the farm- Farm Animals! I hope your little ones have been singing your ears off with “Old Mac Donald!” and naming all the animals and sounds they make because we sure have been learning and practicing in class!
For art this week, our Pups made a horse out of a paper plate and we did some cork stamping to make pigs.
We also got our Pups to participate in a threading activity this week which is a fantastic activity for promoting fine motor development in young children. It requires concentration, thinking skills, encourages the use of the pincer grasp between the thumb and forefinger and naturally strengthens the small hand muscles that are vital for holding a pencil to write with, later on. We simply used pipe cleaners and old powder milk tins. We poked holes in the plastic lid for them to thread the pipe cleaner through … some grasped this technique so quickly while others needed more assistance.
On Thursday morning we took our Pups on a nature walk down to the ponies where they got to see Troy and Frankie. We asked the Pups what colour the ponies were and some shouted “green!”. We are getting to know all our colours but some Pups just seem to have a favorite and everything they see is either green or orange! How cute? We also got to collect grass which we then used for our art piece this week.
This is the third week of term two and for most of these Pups it seems as if they didn’t even have a month break, they are all back into routine and are happy going about their day. For the shyer Pups, some are shedding a few tears when being dropped off in the morning but this is absolutely fine and there is nothing to worry about, it takes two seconds for them to settle and then they’re off playing or doing an activity with their teachers. Us as adults don’t want to climb out our warm beds in the morning because it’s so dark and cold, so just imagine what it must be like for your little ones!?

We hope you all have a super weekend ahead, keep warm and safe. See you back on Monday!

Dear Hopper Parents

This week we learnt about fruits and vegetables on the farm. What a great theme in encouraging our little ones to eat healthily, especially with winter around the corner! We started this week off with a theme discussion about fruits and vegetables; we spoke about our favourite fruits and vegetables as well as the difference between them.

This week our kiddies made a progressive art piece of a Fruit and Vegetable Farm. First they sponge painted a beautiful blue sky with clouds and then glued on some soil, which they had collected on their nature walk! For their fruit and veggies, they used their handprints and fingers to paint such unique fruit and veg shapes!

in Cooking Class with Chef Nombuso, the children put their cooking and artistic skills to the test when they made a delicious fruit and veggie caterpillar, using strawberries for the head, cucumber slices for the body, carrot sticks for the legs and green beans for the grass!

It has been a very busy week with assessments, building puzzles, counting and reassessing.

Remember to dose up your little ones with extra vitamins, it is getting a lot colder out there!

This week has brought chilly weather, but that has not stopped our Bugs from enjoying their days to the MAX! We had a jam packed week learning all about The Farm: Fruit and Vegetables! This is a theme close to our hearts at EcoKids as it is everything we stand for and believe in. Healthy kids and healthy food.

Our Bugs had so much fun discussing the different fruits and veggies and we were very surprised at how many different fruits and veggies our Bugs actually know, including the less common ones like Kiwi, Cherries, Cauliflower and Spring Onion. When we asked our Bugs if they enjoyed fruits, we had a very collective YES!!! When we asked if our Bugs enjoyed vegetables… well, not so much! Haha!

We also got to discuss what the differences between fruits and vegetables are. Fruits grow on trees or vines, and veggies grow on or in the ground. As well as that fruits are better to eat raw and veggies are better to eat cooked, although technically you can eat them any way you choose.

For cooking class with Chef Nombuso, we got to make the cutest little caterpillars using a strawberry for thee head, cucumber slices for the body carrot sticks for the legs and green beans for the grass. The Bugs had so much fun assembling their little caterpillars!

For Art this week, the Bugs looked at pictures of different veggies, and coloured in pictures in the same colours that they saw. We then cut out these veggies, sang our “let’s make some soup” song, and stuck the veggies inside our soup bowl.
We also made another art piece this w eek, but have decided to keep it for art expo! Yay!

This week also happened to be our first week of show and tell for the Bugs! Well done to Arlo and Theju on your amazing confidence during your show and tell “presentations”. We loved seeing the awesome goodies you brought with you!

Have a lovely weekend, keep warm and we will see you all next week!
