Zoom! Vroom! Splash!

There are so many ways to get from point A to point B and this week we covered all of them!  From airplanes to cars, bikes to boats, scooters to submarines… the list goes on and on!  We got to look at photos and videos of all of these different modes of transport and these Bugs learnt so much!

We also discussed what the definition of transport is: moving items or people from one place to another using either the land, the air or the sea.

Our Bugs learnt that they get transported to and from school by their mommies or daddies, and then mommy and daddy transport themselves to work.

We love testing the Bugs memory skills by asking them questions about what was discussed the day before during ring time, and we are very happy to report that most of our Bugs are able to tell us what was said the day before.  Well done kiddos!  We also like to test our Bugs to see if they can notice who is not at school that day. 90% of the time, they can name every Bug who is not at school.

For art this week we made the most adorable “Modes of Transport” chart. We painted a piece of paper green for grass and blue for sky. We added a strip of black paper for the road (no potholes in these roads!) and a strip of blue for the water. We then gave the Bugs some items from the art studio to create the different modes of transport. We used a plastic straw and wrapping paper for the plane, a button and bread tag for the hot air balloon. We used little lids as a row boat and scrap fabric and paper as a sailing boat. Lastly, we used a tin tab as a car and bread tabs as a truck. The Bugs obviously required a little bit of help sticking of the bits and bobs on (glue gun glue gets very hot!), but they helped where they could and were so impressed with the final outcome!

Assessments are underway and report time is nearing. These past few weeks have been so much fun for us teachers, working one-on-one so intimately with the Bugs has been such a treat! We are so proud of each of our Busy Bugs and we hope that you enjoy reading their reports as much as we enjoyed writing them.

Have a lovely weekend, stay warm and we will see you all next week!

IB Principle: Balanced – This week we focused on the importance of balance by using a seesaw as an example. We explained four parts: thinking, feeling, doing, and being. Balance means making sure all four parts get equal attention, like keeping a seesaw level.

  • Thinking: learning new things and using your brain
  • Feeling: taking care of your emotions and being kind
  • Doing: playing, creating, and taking action
  • Being: relaxing, reflecting, and being yourself

We explained to the Squad that if we balance all four parts, we feel happy, healthy, and strong! Just like a stable seesaw.

Writing and Phonics: This week we focused on letters sounds a-z as well as sight words. The Squad did a worksheet on syllables where they had to clap the syllables of each object on the picture e.g. “Mex-i-can” to determine how many syllables are in each word and then cut out and pasted them where they belong. They grasped this new concept well and were seen trying to clap out the syllables of their friends’ names too. Hehe super cute – Keep it up Squad!

Mathematics: This week we focused on counting to 20 and back, as well as practiced drawing 2D shapes and their properties. The Squad did a worksheet on “addition with 10 frames” to complete the sums by depicting what is missing, such as 6 + (_) = 10, they counted the open blocks and added the number 4 in the given space.

Cooking: For our cooking class this week the Squad used their creativity and fine motor skills to the max by making their own ships (Transport theme). They started with a base made from half an apple, then added syrup and Rice Krispies to create the ship’s structure. Next, they added a triangular cheese flag on a toothpick and a jelly baby “human” to complete the design. This made a delicious and healthy snack, great work little chefs!

Creative Art: The Squad built their own “transport” using recycled materials such as old video cassettes and hair curlers. They were intrigued with the materials they used and were impressed with their wonderful creations. (boats, rockets, cars, bikes) – Each one uniquely spectacular!

 Have a wonderful weekend!

During ring time every morning we tried to get the Crew to use ’transport’ in the sentences they used when describing different types of transport. We want them to understand the concept of what transport means and that yes its cars and trucks and planes and boats but what are the purposes for these great machines? It was very funny to hear when asking the Crew how do we know where to go and we have never been there beforethe map on mommy and daddy’s phone. LOL Back in the day it was a book with addresses and road maps. But good answer Crew!

We did another guided drawing activity this week, which the Crew really enjoyed! This time we did a drawing of a map. I love these kinds of activities as it is preparing the Crew for Grade R where they will have to copy sentences off of the board. This time in their guided drawing they got to colour in their work. It came out really beautifully!

Our Curious Crew class symbol is a hot air balloon so how could we not do a little art activity to go with that! The Crew had to put their fine motor skills to the test so they weaved the baskets for the hot air Balloon. We will be keeping this little art project for Art Expo, they are too cute not to keep.

When learning the shape of the week the shape poem goes as follows:

I’m Danny Diamond

I have 4 sides

All of them

Are diagonal lines.

But what are diagonal lines? We showed the Crew with our arms, vertical line, then horizontal line and diagonal lines. Diagonal lines mean that they go at an angle. Please go over this with your child at home they really enjoyed the concept of know different line names.

Last week our shape of the week was an Octagon and we didn’t have enough time to do an activity so we added it into this weeks work. I always describe an octagon with an octopus. An octopus has 8 legs and an octagon has 8 sides and is the same shape as a Stop sign on the road. When you are driving parents point out the 8 sided Stop street signs.

This week for cooking we had such a super treat! Brownie Robots. Cut into rectangles with Skittal lights. The Crew got to mix the batter and put the brownies into the oven. Once they were out we decorated them and out them into bags for the Crew to enjoy at home.

Thank you to everyone who has brought concert clothes so far. Please if you haven’t sent clothes. We need them ASAP to start decorating clothes.

This week will be the first set of Letter Challenge letters to be sent home for homework. It is important to focus on the SOUND of the letters as well as letter recognition and formation. Good luck and enjoy this little bit of bonding time with your child. Their work will be marks and they will receive a sticker.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

We started off this week talking about various kinds of air, land, and sea transport. We also had so much fun pretending to be various kinds of transport. We spread our arms and were super-fast jets, we made “Choo-Choo sounds for a train and blew our horns to be a big ship.

For our art, this week we coloured in a picture of a sailboat with wax crayons then we cut it out. On a separate piece of paper, we used tissue paper to create some water. We painted over tissue paper with water and let it dry and then after it dried, we pulled the tissue paper off which left behind a lovely blue colour to represent water. The Hoppers loved this activity.

We played a hide and seek triangle game. Teacher Yolandie hid various triangles away in the class and when she held up their name cards, they had to recognise their name and then go look for a triangle in the class. Some Hoppers were able to recognise their names and others needed some help.

Assessments are still on going at this stage.

On Friday for Yoga was dice day. Shaking the magic box and seeing what 2 poses we had to do and for how many seconds we had to hold it was very exciting. The poses included Camel, downward dog, cat, and cow pose. Forward bend, backward stretch table pose and relax pose.

Our Hoppers did their cooking session on Thursday morning. They made apple boats with quarter apples with honey dripped over it and covered it with rice Krispies and cut cheese into triangles which they put onto a toothpick to represent a sail. This was a sticky affair but so much fun.

It has been such a wonderful week!

Oh my goodness, this week was an absolute blast! We dived into the wonderful world of different types of transport, and let me tell you, the little Pups knew exactly what they were talking about. They impressed us all with their knowledge and enthusiasm!

We kicked off the fun with some imaginative play, pretending to drive cars and be trains. The Pups absolutely loved it! Their giggles and excitement filled the room as they zoomed around and chugged along.

For our art project, we got super creative. We coloured in a beautiful train and even painted wheels using toilet rolls. The Pups’ artistic talents shone brightly, and their colourful creations were simply adorable.

Of course, transportation week would not be complete without singing “Wheels on the Bus” – and boy, did we sing it a lot! Their cheerful voices and big smiles made each rendition more delightful than the last.

We also put a big focus on fine motor skills and counting. The Pups did such an amazing job, showing off their growing skills and making us all proud. Watching them learn and have fun at the same time was just the sweetest thing ever.

All in all, it was a week filled with learning, laughter, and loads of love. Our little explorers are already looking forward to the next adventure!

This week , we had real fun with our theme discussions. There was just so much to talk about , we discussed the different kinds of transports we get , and just what makes them different , we watched a few educational videos on these and we learnt about different kinds of transportation

For art this week , we did a follow the number aeroplane worksheet , that the kiddos had to colour , the kids put in so so so much effort and this was completed beautifully.

We also made our very own maps, we used this as a guided activity where the kids had to follow the simple instructions given to complete the map accordingly

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week we had our sports lessons with coach Trevor indoors because of the super chilly weather we had on Thursday. coach Trevor had the most amazing obstacles set up for the class.

This week we enjoyed our delicious baking Thursday ! We made cars out of finger biscuits and smarties , each child was over the moon excited to eat their yummy cars !!

Our focus on this activity was learning to spread icing with a knife and stuck small goodies on too.

Our Friday was filled with a super fun show and tell , where each child was just filled with so much excitement telling their friends about their cars and transports

We also ended our day off with sending Gerry home with our special lucky friend of the week …. Who will it be ??? ….

May everyone have a blessed weekend.

Writing and Phonics: This week we completed our new set of CVC family words: “an”. We completed a worksheet which required the children to use their sound buttons and sound out each word along with matching the correct image. We then wrote sentences in our thin lined books, and they did so wonderfully using the cat method. Keep it up!

Maths: Our mathematics lesson this week was focused on our 2D and 3D shapes. We had a discussion on the different shapes, where we can find objects with that same shape (in the shops, or in the classroom) and the properties of that shape. We are beginning to use terms such as vertices (for corners) and edges for (sides). Lastly, we drew 2D shapes and the Squad are coming along nicely.

Life Skills: “Risk Takers”- This week we discussed the different types of risks that we can take. That every day we are faced with risks but it is how we handle them that makes the situation good or bad.

Art: During art this week we made our very own cars. Firstly, we drew ourselves as if we were driving a vehicle and then we chose our very own wheels that we could stick on. It is adorable watching them get so creative by choosing different colour bottle lids or being precise and using all of the same size bottle caps.

Afrikaans: For Afrikaans we completed a comprehension about Ben die Hond.

Cooking & Music: For cooking this week, the squad made their very own healthy trucks using bread, oranges, cheese and banana. The children buttered their own bread and cut their own cheese. Working on their fine motor skills. Well done!

FunFit Sports: The children played an aiming game where they had to grab a ball and throw it into a bucket. The game increased by difficulty by the bucket moving further back each round. Well done!

It has been a great week. Assessments are in full swing so please could we ask that your child attend school every day.

We sponge painted a diamond shape piece of paper navy blue, the children were given all different kinds of shapes to make a car, boat, and an airplane to stick onto the paper and then turned the diamond into a kite.

Our letter for the week was “Jj”, our letter land book was all about Jumping Jim, we all jumped around the classroom like jumping Jim saying different “J” words. Please ask your Hoppers to tell you some words that start with the letter “J’? This was so much fun, and our Hoppers really impressed us when asked for “J” words.

On Tuesday for yoga, they worked on picture and pose association. There were a variety of pictures with animals/ transport and numbers. They did poses according to their picture and the number of breaths according to the numbers on the picture.

We listened to a new song called “I am a mountain tall and strong” and chatted about different animals and birds which we find in the wild, jungle, ocean and rainforest

Our Hopper did their cooking session Friday morning and turned their morning snack into boats. They cut their fruit into triangles and stuck them into their muffins with a toothpick and made the most delicious muffin boats. Well done, Hoppers!

This week we learnt all about Land, Air and Sea transport! This is definitely a theme that appeals to the BOYS in our class a lot more than the girls and the boys had a great time running around pretending to be aeroplanes, motorbikes and helicopters. The sound effects were very impressive!

We were super busy with our art this week! We did some stamping.  We make a shape boat for art. We learnt a new song called “aeroplanes all in a row.” We are also busy practicing for the concert.  So, the Pups were hard at work this week!

Please can I remind you to LABEL your children’s clothes, especially jackets and shoes. It warms up dramatically during playtime and often our Pups take their own jackets off and leave them wherever they happen to fall. If things are not labelled it becomes almost impossible to find. Some of the older children often see things lying on the playground and then take it to where they think it belongs and it lands up going on a journey home with 6 different children in a totally different class before we finally track down a missing item. PLEASE try help us help you by LABELLING your stuff, even with a ball point pen on the tag. Also remember NO toys to come to school.

Please also pump the immune boosters and probiotics.

Have a super weekend. Take care and keep warm!
