There is always something new to learn when doing under the sea. There are so many different types of sharks in the sea, like Bullhead sharks and Lemon sharkshow interesting is that!!! We learnt about the coral reef and how each little piece of coral is a living animal and all the animals work together to make the coral reef using pieces of bone from fish and other sea creatures that have died. Parrot fish eat the coral and poop out what we now know as sea sand, we had a good laugh at that fact! We also told the kiddies that they are only allowed to pick up shells and coral if it has been washed up on the beach and not pick it out of the sea. Something different we discussed, using your 5 senses while you are at the beach.

We have had two weeks of many activities and assessments exploring oceans and the other themes of the week. We started the week’s activities with a little under the sea colouring sheet and it was so awesome to see their imaginations runs wild. Even though we are hard at work with assessments, I have tried to make these activities fun for the Crew.

The Crew also got to see real shark eggs! How awesome. Each of the Crew will be bringing home a shark egg to keep.

We have also started name writing with the proper letter formation to grow on previous weeks lessons. This is very important for next year in Grade R! Please practice the SOUND of the letters at home as well as letter recognition putting emphasis on the sound.

During FFS last week the Crew had been doing assessments with Coach Trevor and WOW I am so impressed with how far the Crew has come over the course of the year. Keep up the hard work Crew!

At yoga with Teacher Nicole the Crew worked on picture and pose association using a variety of pictures ranging from animals to transport. They also practiced breathwork using numbers and they just LOVE their 3 minutes of relax time at the end of their lesson.

This was our last week of puzzle challenge, well done to all of our Crew! Certificates and prizes will go out next week to our top 3 Puzzle Challenge winners.

What a fun two weeks we had learning all about the creatures under the sea. All with a well-deserved break in-between.

The Happy Hoppers was very busy this week with all fine and gross motor activities. They did so well with their pencil control with the fun under the sea activity. They loved moving their body to the jelly fish song and for art they made some magic with a starfish salt painting. The amazement the showed when the saw how the salt lets the food colouring spread was so fun to watch.

We were so proud of the Hoppers showing patience with the tortoise race. And the great posture they displayed. The picked up the instructions of the activity very quickly and understood that slow and steady wins the race!

For yoga, this week The Happy Hoppers worked on picture and pose association once again. There were a variety of pictures with animals and transport. Some pictures have numbers 1-5; we did various breath work according to the number. The Hoppers matched or poses according to the pictures, lion, elephant, monkey, crocodile, motorcycle, train, dolphin, and eagle. We ended our session with 3 minutes of relaxing time.

We are looking forward Mommy/Daddy and Me Yoga next week … see you there!

This is definitely one of our favorite themes of the year!

We spoke about the different animals that live “under the sea”, as well as on the shore and were pleasantly surprised to learn just how much our Bugs know about sea creatures. We covered everything from the teeniest tiniest little organism all the way up to the largest mammal on earth! We spoke about sharks and covered quite a few of the different species of sharks including the Great White Shark, the Hammerhead Shark, the Whale Shark and the Tiger Shark, that they are cold blooded and eat other sea creatures. We spoke about whales, like the Blue Whale and the Killer Whale, we spoke about the blowhole and what they use it for, as well as what they eat. We learned that turtles come to the shore to lay their eggs and bury them in the sand, and that they have a hard shell on the back to protect them from predators such as sharks and killer whales. We learned that the proper names for “Nemo” and “Dory” are a clown fish and a blue tang. We learned that Seahorses wrap their tails around seaweed to hold on and that the daddy seahorse carries the babies in his tummy rather than the mommy seahorse! We learned about Crabs and what they use their shell and pincers for, Sea Anemone’s that have poisonous spikes to protect them and Starfish that can regrow their limbs if they happen to lose one.

We discussed the importance of marine conservation and why plastic is so dangerous for marine animals. We also got to play with our Ocean Sensory Table, which had blue fabric “water”, sand, shells, sands and plastic sea creatures in. The Bugs absolutely loved this activity and where so excited to go “hunting” for things on the table.

For art for this theme, we made the most scary and adorable sharks. We did this by painting scrap paper blue, cutting a half-oval shape out of newspaper, 4 options of mouth shapes and lots of little paper triangles. The Bugs got to stick everything on exactly where they wanted it to go and create their awesome sharks.

We also made a collaborative art piece for our amazing student teacher, Teboho’s, assignments. The Bugs each got a turn to paint a giant sheet of paper blue, they leafed through magazines to find pictures of sea creatures and cut them out, coloured in little sea creature pictures, sponge painted white for the clouds and dipped pieces of tissue paper into green paint to make seaweed. This piece was absolutely stunning!

We hope you all have a lovely weekend, rest well and we will see you back next week for another exciting theme!

These past two weeks have been splash-tastic under the sea! The Pups surprised me with all they knew about sea animals—big and small, and so many colors! We had so much fun making art too, dipping corks in paint to create a spotty little starfish and fishy friends. The corks made the cutest little dots!

Of course, we had to sing our favorites, Baby Shark and the Jellyfish Song!  For Yoga, we practiced matching poses to picture cards of animals and different transport symbols—think lions, elephants, and even trains! Our morning tunes included Silly to Calm and Fly Like a Butterfly, which helped us start the day with big smiles.

Our group project was a hit! We painted together on a giant paper spread on the floor using paint rollers, and the Pups had the best time making big, colorful strokes.

We’ve been busy with assessments too, getting ready for report time, and I’m thrilled with everyone’s progress! Plus, potty training is coming along beautifully, and saying goodbye to bottles has been much easier than expected. I couldn’t be prouder of each and every Pup!

Wishing everyone a joyful weekend, and see you all on Monday!

What a full and fun two weeks we have had. This is such a wonderful theme to learn about especially for the EcoKids as this theme is close to what we represent. There is so much unnecessary trash and plastic that finds its way into our oceans every day and we need to all find a way to stop this problem as it is killing our marine life, polluting the waters and slowly killing our home. We focused a lot on our moral conscious theme this week of ocean environmental awareness. We sure hope the message has sunk in!

We spoke about all the animals we find in the oceans! We learnt about turtles and sea horses – did you know the daddy sea horse looks after all the babies? So interesting! We learnt about Clown fish (Nemo!) and Blue Tangs (Dori!) and about star fish. Sea snails, octopi and jelly fish! We learnt that jelly fish have quite a sting! And not to be scared to go swimming in the ocean because of sharks. Sharks are not monsters – they do not like to eat people! We learnt about seals and sea lions, whales, and crabs! What a lot to learn about! Some of these animals have stings or spikes, some have sharp teeth, and some have claws and pincers!  What a lot to learn about!

We made a lovely jelly fish with a paper plate and some ribbon and string, and the Pups really loved painting this art piece. Well done!

Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend! Next week is going to so much fun cooking and eating fun in our classroom! We will send things home as we make them.

We love our Oceans, and our Hopper’s do too.  Over the past two weeks, we learned and discussed many facts and concerns about our oceans.

Here are some “did you know facts” about our awesome oceans.

– The majority of life on earth is aquatic.

– Less than 5% of the planet’s oceans have been explored.

– The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater.

– Plastic is the most common pollutant found in our Oceans.

It is up to us to protect our oceans and the sea life that occupies our oceans. We are so proud of how much our Hoppers care about our planet, and they enjoyed the art activities we had planned.

What a fun, jam-packed two-week we have had with this theme.

We put our fine motor, visual perceptual and creative skills to the test with all the fun activities we did.

The Hoppers loved creating their jellyfish. They decorated a paper plate cut in half with finger painting. The hoppers then practised their fine motor skills, threading wool into punched holes to make the legs of the jellyfish and googly eyes to finish him off. They are super cute! For our next art activity, we created amazing shark sensory bottles. The children added some glitter, orbees, some seaweed (green material), water and a foam shark to a plastic bottle and shook it all up. Our Hoppers loved this activity and put their fine motor skills to the test by scooping the glitter and putting it into the bottle.

Assessments for year-end have been going well. We are so proud of all our Hoppers!

At FunFit Sports, Coach Trevor assessed the kiddos in different activities …  running, jumping, throwing and catching… The Hoppers did an amazing job in each activity. Well done!

At yoga this week, using the hands and feet cards, we focused on problem-solving. This activity stimulates the Prefrontal cortex part of the brain and the Anterior cingulate cortex, which manages potential solutions to the challenge. The object is similar to Twister. The highlight of today’s yoga class was that I had a hole in my sock! 🤣🧦

For cooking, we made delicious fish cupcakes. We decorated vanilla cupcakes with icing and then lay smarties on them to look like scales. Our Hoppers could not wait to gobble them all up J

Our theme next week will be Shops and Shopping.

Please can we have your 5 shopping items no later than Monday.

Have a safe and lovely Weekend.

The Curious Crew had a blast with this theme , as it was a double week theme of UNDER THE SEA,

This theme has made ring time and theme discussions very very interesting , as we have discussed and spoken about our favourite sea animals and creatures , as well as discussing why these animals specifically live in the sea.

We had a blast watching educational videos on sea creatures and what makes them so very special too.

It has been fun learning about each child’s favourite creature.

We have also taken the time to count to 50 , and practice that several times , and we also enjoyed our all time new favourites of reading our rhyming word books.

ART

For art this week , we had a very special job and class project , we all worked together very closely and we created our Oscar the Octopus , we used many colours and sponges to paint on his tentacles , and we linked all our papers together to create this very very special little new member of our curious crew classroom.

FUNFIT SPORTS

This week with coach Trevor , we continued with our assessments for our reports , he put us to the real test and we had to show him exactly what we are made of ! The curious crew sure do love being challenged 😁

Have a lovely weekend!

Moral conscious theme: Ocean Environment Consciousness: These two weeks were focused on how we can keep our oceans clean. How important it is that we throw our litter away responsibly and recycle because everything could end up in the ocean and that can affect our sea creatures. We also spoke about what food we can get from the sea and how we make sure that there is always more and that it does not run out.

Writing and Phonics: We are currently busy with our assessments, could we please ask that your child attend school every day so that we are able to assess them correctly. We are pleased with how far our Squad have come. We have been covering our word family’s “op” and “og” and writing corresponding sentences.

Mathematics: For maths we completed addition and subtraction sums up to 20 – showing the Squad that you can calculate in different ways. Counting on method, jumping frog number line method and using our fingers / concrete objects. It is important for the children to see how it is possible so that they have the abilities going forward to help them.

Creative Art: For art we let the children create their very own octopus using paper plates and party streamers. We also drew beautiful under the sea pictures. We are so proud of how far they have come with their abilities.

Music and Cooking: For cooking this week we discussed how we cook fish as opposed to cooking meat. Graduation is around the corner and the Squad are practicing their poem lines and songs for the special evening.

FunFit Sports: Due to mid-term there was no FunFit sports this week but last week the children were enthralled in a very competitive game of ten pin bowling.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

We started the week off with listening to each other’s fun weekend/midterm news with broad discussions as well as by introducing this week’s theme, “Under the Sea”. We spoke about the animals we can find under the sea as well as shipwrecks and ancient artifacts. The Squad thoroughly enjoyed this topic and were engaged throughout the discussion, sharing their own knowledge and ideas about the ocean.

Phonics and Writing

Within the two weeks the Squad did worksheets on the “un”,“ut”, “ug” and “ub” family where they had to match the picture to the word, to do so they had to try and spell out the sound of each letter using their sound buttons. They then wrote sentences using those words along with integrating their sight words using their “cats” head, tummy tail for correct positioning and spacing of the words. We are impressed by the Squad’s progress of formation of letters as well as handwriting and “reading” of their sight words!

Maths:

We continued to practice counting from 1-30 as well as count backwards from 30 – 1.  Within the two weeks we completed an ordinal numbers worksheet where they had to colour in the insect for e.g “Colour in the third butterfly.” The squad did a worksheet on patterns using shapes, they had to circle the shape that comes next to form the pattern. These geniuses grasped this so well! We also did a lot of practical learning to develop math’s skills using concrete objects and fun math’s games.

Life Skills:

With focusing on our moral conscious theme: “Ocean Environmental Consciousness”, we discussed as a class that it is important to respect the ocean and its beautiful creatures. We can do this by picking up litter and using fewer plastic products by recycling and reusing. More than half of the earth’s oxygen comes from the ocean. The Ocean is an important source of food for people.

 Afrikaans:

For Afrikaans we did a recap of colours, numbers, body parts and simple greetings.

 FunFit Sports:

At FunFit Sports this week the Squad were tested in speed, agility, and teamwork! The activity was called Open Gate … One kiddo was selected to be the catcher, who had to prevent his/her selected  friend from reaching the other side of the demarcated area. If the friend made it to the other side, Coach Dave then called out “OPEN GATE!” allowing all the children to run … if they were caught, they would then join the catcher in catching their friends! Lots of fun!!

There is always something new to learn when doing under the sea. There are so many different types of sharks in the sea, like Bullhead sharks and Lemon sharks…how interesting is that!!! Something different we discussed was using your 5 senses while you are at the beach. Please ask your child at home about using their senses while they were at the beach.

The Crew have some homework to do, please try and go to Dischem over the weekend and look for sponge that comes from the see, so your kiddie can see real coral sponges.

We have had two weeks of many activities exploring oceans and the other themes of the week. We started the week’s activities by making a little under the sea booklet. The Crew used different ocean books to see what they would like to put in their Ocean booklet and wow, I was amazed at the drawings these Crew came up with!

Even though we are hard at work with assessments, I have tried to make these activities fun for the Crew. When doing patterns, we painted a pattern caterpillar, and WOW it came out so beautifully and I think using the paint just made it come to life with colour.

It was also a week where I introduced rhyming words to the Crew. When reading rhyming books I will read and put emphasise on the first rhyming word and then the Crew have to try and guess the next rhyming word. At first they were a little unsure but the next day when I read a different rhyming book they started to try different words. YAY this is so amazing, they impress me every year! We also practiced some sight words, the sight word I use will stay the same as they are just an introduction.

We have also started name writing with the proper letter formation. The Crew listen well and are again being introduced to the correct way to write letters. This is very important for next year in Grade R! Please practice the SOUND of the letters at home as well as letter recognition putting emphasis on the sound.

During FunFit Sports last week, the Crew played Hop Scotch and had to listen to different instructions while jumping through the hoops. Switch on those listening ears Crew! This week in FFS we did assessments and in the week coming Coach Dave will be doing assessments for FunFit Sports.

This is our second last week of puzzle challenge, our last graph will go out next week Friday with certificates to everyone who participated and our top 3 Puzzle Challenge winners.
