IB Principle: Open-Minded – We explained to the Squad that being open-minded means being willing to listen to and consider other people’s ideas and thoughts, even if they’re different from yours.

Imagine you have a friend who loves playing with blocks, but you love playing with dolls. Being open-minded means you can say, “That’s cool! You like blocks, and I like dolls. Let’s play together and find a way to make it fun for both of us!”

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad focused on the “ug” family and wrote sentences in their workbooks using the cat method. We are so pleased with how well they are progressing with their handwriting, focusing on finger spacing and placing the letters in the correct part of the “cat”. They also decoded words using sound buttons in their Time2Read books. Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week for maths the squad tackled addition sums up to 20 in their workbooks. Some used the “counting on” method, while others used their abacuses, showing their individual understanding of the concept. We also practiced counting to 30 and backwards, as well as in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Creative Art: For art this week the kiddies created their own South African flags by colouring, cutting, and puzzle-piecing the blocks together. They were so chuffed with the outcome!

Music: We are currently practicing graduation songs, and the squad is singing with all their heart. It is a bittersweet time of the year filled with excitement!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Have a wonderful weekend!

We began our week with FunFit Sport alongside Coach Trevor. The Crew practiced their shotput and javelin skills, and it is incredible to see how far they have come. Their effort and determination made me so proud.

Our ring times were filled with exciting discussions about different cultures, cuisines and continents. We spoke about the importance of respecting each other’s backgrounds and celebrating the many ways we can share our cultures with others.

Keeping with the theme of food, the Crew had the opportunity to see how pasta is made with Teacher Tegan. Of course, the best part was getting to taste it afterwards, and it was so delicious. I have a feeling they may be asking you to make some at home soon.

Music time was all about instruments. We explored the different families of instruments such as wind, percussion and string. The children loved listening to the sounds each one makes before playing a guessing game to identify them. We ended the lesson with a lively mini dance party.

🌟 Mind Ninjas Fun 🌟

This week our focus was on kindness and feelings. We spoke about “What makes us feel good?” and “What hurts our feelings?” and then watched a short clip called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The children learned how small acts of kindness can help fill someone’s bucket, making them feel valued and happy. These skills are so important for building strong friendships and helping the Crew regulate their emotions both in and out of the classroom.

👉 Home Challenge: Ask your child to “fill someone’s bucket” at home this week with a kind word or action and notice how it makes everyone feel.

For art, the Crew created their very own passports. These will be kept safe for our upcoming art expo and will also be used on our outing as a special pass. In their workbooks, the children drew their favourite places, ranging from the beach to Durban, a forest and even their own homes. It was wonderful to hear them share where they feel happiest.

We also constructed a new 3D shape this week — the rectangular prism. The Crew decorated their prisms with drawings of their favourite things, and each one came out so unique and creative.

Our focus on the alphabet remains a big part of our learning. During ring time I always ask the Crew, “What is the most important thing we learn in Curious Crew class?” and without fail they answer, “The alphabet.” I remind them that learning the alphabet in a group helps them learn from one another, which is why listening closely in ring time is so important.

Maths this week introduced the concepts of bigger than, smaller than and equal to. The Crew completed a worksheet on this and did so well. We also practiced counting with another worksheet, and I can see how much effort they are putting into learning their numbers. Well done Crew!

For our letter of the week, p, we enjoyed finding as many words as we could that begin with the sound. This is a fun game you can also play at home, in the car or at the shops to keep little minds working.

We are also officially in full swing with our Puzzle Challenge! Just a reminder that the puzzle swap in reception is there for trading puzzles, so if you are able to bring a puzzle or two from home, it would be a great help to make sure every child has one to work with.

Next week’s theme: Insects and Bees

Hello there beautiful Happy Hopper Parents.

This week we learnt about a very special place called South Africa.

🐘 Amazing Animals

South Africa is home to some of the world’s most famous animals. You can find lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and even playful penguins! People go on safaris to see these animals in the wild.

🏞 Beautiful Places

South Africa has mountains, beaches, and even deserts. One of the most famous mountains is Table Mountain, which looks like a giant table! Children love to take a cable car ride to the top and see the city below.

🎶 Music and Dancing

In South Africa, people love to sing, dance, and play drums. The music is happy and makes you want to move your feet!

🍞 Yummy Food

Children in South Africa enjoy eating tasty foods like pap (a porridge made from corn), sweet koeksisters (a yummy, syrupy treat), and fresh fruit like oranges and grapes.

We did a little maths graph to see which was their favourite food and for some reason most of them said burgers.

👩👩👧👦 Friendly People

South Africa is sometimes called the Rainbow Nation because people from many different cultures and languages live together. Children learn to say “hello” in different ways, like:

“Sawubona” (Zulu)

“Molo” (Xhosa)

“Hello” (English)

🌟 Fun Fact

Did you know? South Africa has 11 official languages! That’s more than almost any other country in the world.

This has been an amazing and super busy week. We carried on working on our art expo pieces. For our art we worked on our fine motor skills and collaged a picture of the South African flag by tearing and sticking pieces of paper. This is a wonderful skill to strengthen their fine motor muscles.

We sung South African songs including the National Anthem. This was so interesting as some of the Hoppers call our Anthem “the rugby song”

I’m so blessed to be a pre-school teacher listening to all these wonderful stories I hear from our Hoppers.

We hope you have an amazing weekend.

Have a wonderful weekend!

This week our theme was countries, and oh what a fun adventure it was! 🌍✨ We spoke about the different countries we get and focused a lot on our colours, especially the ones we see on flags. For art, the Bugs painted a beautiful South African flag. They had to carefully listen and follow teacher’s instructions by painting the right colours in the right places – and they all did absolutely amazing! 🎨

We also spent some time working on our art expo pieces to make sure everything is up to date – it’s coming closer and closer and we are sooooo excited! 🥳💫

For FunFit Sports, the Bugs enjoyed a fun round of ten-pin bowling! 🎳 We filled cold drink bottles with newspaper and used colourful little balls to knock them down. Everyone had such a blast and did an awesome job! 👏🌈

We also went into safari South African mode 🦒🦓 by making our own binoculars – tearing up paper and sticking them onto toilet rolls. The Bugs were so proud of their creations and couldn’t wait to “explore” with them! 🐾🔭

On Yoga Day, we went on a magical yoga adventure across the world 🌎🧘♀️, exploring the 7 continents and 7 seas while learning brand-new yoga poses:
🦬 North America – Bison Pose
🐭 South America – Chinchilla Pose
🐺 Europe – Grey Wolf Pose
🐼 Asia – Panda Pose
🐨 Australia – Koala Pose
🐸 Africa – Clawed Frog Pose
🐳 Antarctica – Whale Pose

We even sailed the 7 seas in Sailboat Pose and dived deep in a Submarine Pose! ⛵🌊 The Bugs learned so many interesting facts along the way and ended the session with calm and peaceful relaxation time in Shavasana Pose. 💆♀️✨

We wrapped up our busy week on Thursday by finishing our art and having some block play 🧱. The Bugs were so excited to call out all the different colours they saw while proudly showing us the tall towers they built. Those big happy smiles on their faces are the sweetest thing ever! 🥰💖

This week in the Playful Pups class we set out on a mini world adventure — no passports needed, just big imaginations and plenty of giggles!

We started our week off with some early morning yoga with Teacher Nicole. There’s nothing quite like watching toddlers attempt a “downward dog” — it’s part exercise, part comedy show, and 100% adorable. Yoga helps little bodies stretch, balance, and breathe, but more importantly, it gives us a few blissful minutes of calm before the day takes off at full speed!

Since our theme was Countries and Cultures, we proudly began at home, right here in South Africa. All week long, we’ve been waving our rainbow-coloured flag, talking about its bright colours, and even noticing its rectangle shape (our shape of the week). The children now know that our flag isn’t just cheerful to look at, it’s also a perfect way to sneak in a mini geometry lesson!

At every opportunity, we’ve also been playing our national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. A few of our Playful Pups now recognize the tune and even attempt to sing along — proof that little voices really do make the sweetest choir.

Of course, no South African week would be complete without some food fun. On Monday, we tucked into boerewors rolls for lunch, because nothing says “local is lekker” quite like boerewors on a bun. We chatted about how much South Africans love to braai, and I’m pretty sure the Pups all agreed that food tastes better when you eat it with friends.

We also kept busy with fine motor fun, using child-friendly tweezers to pick up and sort pom-poms. Who knew something so small could require such big concentration? The Playful Pups rose to the challenge, one pom-pom at a time.

Our FunFit sports sessions with Coach Trevor are always a highlight. This week we focused on the trapeze swing — encouraging the children to swing on their own and then drop gently into the sandpit below. Brave little gymnasts in the making!

We also enjoyed a lively music session with Teacher Ashleigh, which got our toes tapping and our hands clapping. And to crown it all, the highlight of the week had to be our colourful Hat Parade! This year’s theme,  Down the Rabbit Hole, brought Wonderland to life with a rainbow of creative hats. The children wore their creations with pride, and the photos (shared on our class group) are a true feast for the eyes.

It’s been a jam-packed week of learning, laughter, and lots of exploring. We can’t wait to see where our cultural adventures take us.

Have a wonderful weekend!

IB Principle: Risk Takers – We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker is like being a brave adventurer! It means trying new things, even if they might not work out. When you take risks, you learn and grow, and sometimes you discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you. Imagine if you never tried riding a bike or swimming because you were afraid of falling or getting wet? You would miss out on so much fun! Taking risks helps you build confidence, make new friends, and find new passions. It’s okay to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! So, don’t be afraid to take a chance, try something new, and see where it takes you. You might just discover something amazing!

Writing and Phonics: The squad has made fantastic progress over the weeks, focusing on their word families, this week we focused on the ‘ed’ word family. They demonstrated their understanding by matching words to corresponding the pictures, and writing sentences in their workbooks using these words. It’s impressive to see how their handwriting skills have improved, with noticeable advancements in letter formation and finger spacing. They’re also showing a great understanding of word structure such as placing them in the correct part of the “cats”. Keep up the excellent work, squad!

Mathematics: This week the Squad practiced completing addition sums up to 20 on their whiteboards using concrete objects, and we were impressed to see the class grasp the concept so well – they should be proud of themselves! We also practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10’s. Please continue to reinforce this skill at home.

Creative Art: This week the Squad made their hats for hat parade, we are so impressed by how much effort everyone put into their hat, great work Squad! We have been working on Art Expo pieces and cannot wait for you to see them!

What an interesting week this was!

It is always so important and valuable to learn about different cultures from around the world as you never know when you might get to meet someone from a different culture. South Africa is filled to the brim with so many of its own cultures, as well as cultures from all over the world, and we loved hearing about the different cultures of all of our Bugs.

Our main countries and cultures were: Italy, France, Australia, Germany, The UK and America. We spoke about what food each place is most commonly known for, famous landmarks from these countries and how to say “hello” in all of these places and languages. The Bugs learned, “G’day Mate!”, “Bonjour”, “Ciao”, “Boungiornu”, “Guten Tag”, “Cheers” and “Hi!”.

We also briefly discussed Portuguese, Irish, Afrikaans, Zulu, Muslim, Welsh and many, many more!

We took a different approach this week with regards to creative learning, and instead of doing art pieces, we decided to do cooking instead. We made traditional Fairy Bread from Australia, and “Magwinya” (which are similar to vetkoek) with chicken mayo from Teacher Thandi., and we helped Chef Thembi mke our lunch on Thursday; Alfredo Pasta rom Italy. The kiddies loved exploring the different tastes.

We did however, do some art. We continued to finalize pieces for our Art Expo, as well as start some very cool new ones!

Of course Friday was a special day, as it was HAT PARADE! We were so impressed and proud of the stunning hats that our Bugs made! Well done everyone! We were also so impressed with how brave and confident our Bugs were, walking around the drive way in front of so many people! Well done Bugs!

To teach the children about Heritage Day this week we learnt all about cultures. How lucky we are to live in a country where everyone embraces all our diverse cultures and beautiful country! It was very informative to know all about:

Our national bird: The Blue Crane

Our national animal: The Springbok

Our national tree: The Yellowwood Tree

Our national flower:  The Protea

Our national fish: The Galjoen

The Hoppers enjoyed painting our flag with their fingers. This was a good activity to improve their fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, colour recognition. We are so busy preparing for the art show coming up. The Hoppers are creating the most beautiful pieces to show off on the night!

For yoga the Hop0pers learn all about teamwork. The group flower pose is only possible if everyone can balance, create a circle by holding hands and keep their core strength tight whilst lifting their leg up. The hoppers had so much fun and was able to hold this pose for 15 second. Well done Hoppers.

We would like to wish all our September Hoppers a very Happy Birthday! Bohlale, Iyana, Zayden and Ella, we are so proud of the wonderful kids you have become. Thank you to all the parents for the delicious ice-cream and making the day so special for them.

Wishing everyone a lovely long weekend, enjoy the time with your little ones. Stay warm

See you on Wednesday!

In this eventful week in the Curious Crew class, we started with some art pieces that will go up in our Cow Boys and Indians themed Art Expo. And it couldn’t e going better! These have been fun to make and are coming out better than we could have expected.

We thought it would be super fun for the Crew to mix things up a bit for Show and Tell and explore sharing facts on different countries. Teacher Tegan made a list of countries and numbered them. She then created a digital wheel and each Crew member got to spin the wheel to see what number and country they would have to find facts one. Show and tell this week is going to be so much FUN! And we will be taking videos of the facts presented to the class.

The Crew have loved learning about 3D shapes this year! This week we introduced the shape triangular Prism. Which the Crew coloured in and we stuck them together.

We decided to do a little shape worksheet this week, the Crew had to match a few different pictures with different shapes. For example a kite looks like a diamond and a bird house looks like a pentagon. The Crew did quite well with this activity well done our Clever Crew!

Again this week we have paid very close attention to the alphabet! Whenever we sit down for ringtime I ask the Crew what is the most important thing we need to learn in the Curious Crew class? They will answer, the alphabet. I will always explain to the Crew that when we learn about the alphabet in a group setting they are able to learn from each other, sheo paying attention in ringtime is very important.

We played a game where I placed alphabet letters over randomly over the carpet. We went around in a circle and I asked each Crew to pick 2 letters of their choice, they then came up to the front and told the class the 2 letters that they had picked out. They Crew are doing well with recognition, I do however suggest that letters be practiced at home as well. If you are sounding them out, we focus on the SOUND not the name. Forming the letters in your name are important too, please only use small letters and a capital for first letter.

The Crew loving finding words that go with the letter of the week. This is also a great game to play at home, in the car or the shops. Get their little brains working and making it a game just makes them more likely to engage and remember.

We are in full swing of puzzle challenge. GO GO GO! Get your kiddies building. Just a reminder that the puzzle swop in reception is to swop out puzzles. Please if you could bring a puzzle or 2 from home to swop out with the puzzles in reception as we don’t have enough for everyone to have a puzzle.

This week, we had so much fun exploring countries! The Pups learned about the colorful flags from around the world, perfect for their little imaginations.

In art, we created beautiful African necklaces using paper plates, making them just the right size to wear around their necks. They looked adorable!

We also worked hard on our art expo projects to ensure everything is just right for the big day. Everyone is so excited!

During FunFit Sports, the Pups had a blast with gross motor activities, trying to throw balls into a basket. They did an amazing job!

Our Reggio activity was a hit, too! The Pups enjoyed tracing lines, and some got super creative, even making up their own activities—so clever!

And here’s the sweetest news: potty training is going wonderfully! All the Pups are doing such a fantastic job, and soon they’ll be wearing their big kid undies. I’m so proud of them and can hardly believe how quickly they’regrowingup!

Moral conscious theme: Respect different cultures –

We explained to the Squad that we need to treat everyone equally no matter how they look such as clothing, hairstyles, skin colour and other appearances, or even if they do things differently. Do not make jokes about other cultures.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad worked hard on remembering our sight words as well as wrote out a few of their sight words on their white boards. The squad then did a worksheet on the “eg” family, they had to match the correct words with the pictures followed by writing out sentences with the “eg” family words – their handwriting is drastically improving and we are such proud teachers!

Mathematics: The Squad did a worksheet on “Tallying” followed by a graph where they had to count the number of sea animals and colour their graphs accordingly, this is a difficult concept to learn however they impressed us with how determined they were to get it right, good job!

Creative Art: The Squad has been working hard on their art expo pieces, they are very excited for you to see all their artwork as they keep asking to take them home, teehee – so cute!
