I just love this theme, there are so many things to cover when talking about our very complex and clever bodies! The Crew know all their limbs as well as body parts that they can see. So we went to the body parts that we can’t see. The Crew learnt that their fist is the same size as their stomachs and heart, their 2 fists together are the size of their brain. We covered the stomach and small intestines and the jobs that they do. The Crew now know that our lungs breathe in oxygen which our organs and muscles need. Their heart is a muscle that pumps blood all over our body and that our brain tells our arms and legs what to do, as well as things we don’t even think of. We have bones to keep us up otherwise we would just be like a piece of spaghetti. The Crew know where the smallest bones in your body are and how many bones we have in our bodies.
We all know we can draw with our hands but let’s have some fun drawing with our feet… This was such a cute little activity and seeing the Crew with the crayon between their toes drawing with their feet was the cutest!
For a fun activity we looked at the components that make up our blood. We have red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and yellow plasma. This was a hit with the Curious Crew. They are super proud of their bottles of blood.
Mind Ninja is underway, our first lesson included a BIG hug and then affirming ‘I love me.’ I told the Crew that when they are getting dressed or brushing their teeth and they look in the mirror, they must give themselves a big hug and say ‘I love me’. Each week we will go over the different emotions we experience too. This week we identified feeling ‘happy’, what our facial expression looks like when we are happy as well as what makes us happy. In our activity the Crew had a page filled with different expressions and they had to colour the happy faces only. We finished off with a song and a little team war cry MIND NINJAS!
This week we did our first cooking lesson. The Crew had to peel their own banana, cut it up and made little men, using pretzel sticks for arms and legs, and choc chips for eyes nose and mouth. They came out really cute and the Crew loved eating what they made.
Since we are learning about our bodies, let’s see what details we can add to our body drawings… We worked in small groups and did a guided drawing. We added a neck into our drawing and the children were shown different ways to draw their legs and arms, hair and ears with earrings. It was a very successful activity!
Helpful tips of the week: The most important rule in our class is to ‘Keep your hands to yourself’ (Our action for this, when telling the Crew, is giving themselves a hug). As much fun as it is to hang on to and hold our friends, most of the time it ends up in tears rather than smiles. If you as parents could please chat to your children at home about this rule and respecting their friends’ personal space.
What a wonderful week we have had!
