What a week we’ve had in Crew! Our theme this week was Space, our number was 18, and our shape of the week was the diamond. There was so much excitement, so many curious questions and, as always, plenty of learning hidden amongst all the fun. 

Our week actually started with the coolest question from Caedan. He wanted to know why it was night time in South Africa but day time in England. We grabbed our globe and demonstrated how the Earth turns on its axis and how different parts of the world face the sun at different times of the day. I just love it when the children ask questions like these because they lead to the best discussions. My favourite space fact has to be that the Earth tilts about 23.5 degrees towards the sun in summer and away from the sun in winter, which is why we experience different seasons throughout the year. The Crew thought this was absolutely fascinating! 

Shjoe… we were busy this week! 

We created FOUR magnificent art pieces. One was for Mandela Day, two are very special Art Expo masterpieces, and one was sent home for you to enjoy. The children coloured beautiful Ndebele patterns using oil pastels to decorate their little huts, and every single one was unique. 

Our space theme inspired some incredible artwork too. We made a 3D Solar System, completed a 2D Solar System through directed drawing, and added stickers for that extra wow factor. We also created a spectacular meteorite art piece, but you’ll have to wait a little longer to see that one. We promise it’s worth the wait! 

We had the best time with Coach Trevor, practising our throwing skills by aiming at different targets. Activities like these are fantastic for developing hand eye coordination, balance and concentration, all while the children think they’re simply having fun. 

Our morning with Teacher Nicole was filled with music, rhythm and plenty of smiles. We made music together, explored different beats and had so much fun drumming. 

One of my favourite moments of the week was our nature walk to the dam. We spotted beautiful green algae, a flight of guinea fowl, and even some Egyptian geese. Taking photos of our Crew on these walks has become one of my favourite things to do. There is something so special about watching them explore, ask questions and simply enjoy being outdoors. These walks are pure joy and such a wonderful reset for everyone. 

In amongst all the excitement, we also managed to squeeze in some drawing and “writing” in the sandpit. Writing in sand is such a wonderful way to practise letter formation without the pressure of pencil and paper. It helps develop fine motor control, strengthens memory through repetition, and gives the children the confidence to have a go because if they make a mistake, all they have to do is smooth the sand over and try again. 

What a magical week it has been in Crew. We learnt, explored, questioned, created and, most importantly, had so much fun doing it all together. 💛
