What a fun two weeks of learning all about dinosaurs!

Week 1:

IB Principle: Communicators – We explained to the Squad the importance of communicating and expressing how they feel by using their words and that they must try their best to listen actively to others. We also explained that they need to make sure they are using the correct tone of voice and think about what they want to say to others before saying it as their words can sometimes hurt others.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad practiced letter sounds and were introduced two new sight words, ‘and’ and ‘no’. They focused on the “un” family and completed a worksheet where they had to sound out the word and then match it to the picture, followed by writing sentences in their books using these words and placing them in the correct part of the “cat”. Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week, the squad practiced counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s as well as counted to 30 and back down again. The squad completed a worksheet where they had to cut out pictures of 3D shapes and pasted them into the correct blocks, identifying them as cones, spheres, cylinders, or cubes.

Creative Art: The Squad created a dinosaur backdrop and drew dinosaur pictures. They also made sun catcher dinosaur footprints using coloured plastic and an outline of a footprint.

We are working on an exciting art dinosaur tent for the upcoming Art Expo, which we will showcase on the night.

Music: We are in full swing of practicing for our annual concert – the children are singing their hearts out. Keep it up.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Week 2:

We also explained that they need to make sure they are using the correct tone of voice and think about what they want to say to others before saying it as their words can sometimes hurt others.

Writing and Phonics: This week the Squad practiced letter sounds and were introduced two new sight words, ‘you’ and ‘like’. They focused on the “ut” family and completed a worksheet where they had to sound out the word and then match it to the picture, followed by writing sentences in their books using these words and placing them in the correct part of the “cat”. Great work Squad!

Mathematics: This week, the squad practiced counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s as well as counted to 30 and back down again. They also completed subtraction sums in their workbooks, they understand this concept so well and we are incredibly proud of them!

Creative Art: The squad made their own dinosaur fossils using salt dough, they enjoyed moulding them and then off they went into the oven to set, they can’t wait to bring them home to show you!

We are working on an exciting art dinosaur tent for the upcoming Art Expo, which we will showcase on the night.

What a fun two weeks of learning all about dinosaurs!

Week 1:

What a busy week we’ve had learning about dinosaurs. There are just so many exciting activities to do and fascinating facts to explore. We’re so glad this theme will be continuing into next week.

Ring time has been an absolute treat. Dinosaurs are such an engaging topic and it’s been wonderful hearing the Crew try to pronounce all the tricky names. We explored a dinosaur for each letter of the alphabet and shared interesting facts about each one. Their curiosity and enthusiasm made every discussion so lively and fun.

We’ve started reading a lovely little novel called Dino Club. Each day we read a few pages together and the Crew are hooked. The story follows Jamie and Tess, who connect through a tablet app where children around the world chat about dinosaurs. Jamie and Tess then go on a dino adventure together, venturing into a cave where they discover a whole world of dinosaurs hidden below. We will be finishing this story next week and we can’t wait to see how it ends.

Among the many creative activities this week, we made pinecone dinosaurs. The Crew coloured in pieces of a dinosaur using oil pastels and then attached them to pinecones to create textured 3D dinos. These turned out so beautifully that we’ve decided to keep them for our Art Expo.

We also had a fun outing-style activity where we created dinosaur skins. Each child had a cut-out brontosaurus and walked around the school to find different backgrounds to place it against. This created the illusion of unique, patterned skins and the final photos were absolutely gorgeous. The Crew loved every second of this exploration.

This week we also completed a variety of worksheets, including a dinosaur-themed colouring activity and number writing practice from 1 to 10. The Crew have also been busy with concert rehearsals and working hard on drawing their shapes on the whiteboards with Teacher Avril.

Our Jolly Phonics work has continued as we aim to really cement the letter sounds. The Crew are doing incredibly well with this and many of them can now sing the songs confidently without the help of the video.

FunFit Sports was a major hit this week. Coach Trevor introduced a new game where the children had to hop into a hula hoop of the colour he called out. There was so much laughter and energy—it was such a joyful session.

Yoga this week was all about dinosaurs. The Curious Crew marched, stomped and roared like dinosaurs as they moved through their yoga stretches. These included warrior three, plank, snake and tree pose. We also practised different breathing techniques such as butterfly breath, baby dinosaur breath, snake breath and hot chocolate breath. We ended our session by flying like butterflies and having some peaceful quiet time to centre ourselves again.

The Crew are completely concert-ready, and we are beyond excited to strut our stuff. On Friday we performed for the Primary School, and they did such a brilliant job. We’re so proud of all their hard work and courage. See you all tomorrow morning!

Next week’s theme: Dinosaurs and Underground.

 Week 2:

Another fun-filled week of dinosaurs for the Crew. This time we took a closer look at what happens underground and watched an incredible video showing paleontologists digging up dinosaur bones—big and small. Please ask your child who digs up dinosaur bones. They’ve been working so hard to remember that big word and they’re all saying it with such pride. We also explored the different countries where dinosaur fossils have been discovered. Sadly, South Africa didn’t make the list, but that didn’t stop the Crew from wanting to dig up the playground in search of a fossil or two. Their enthusiasm was contagious.

This week we brought some creativity into the classroom with a little cooking-style fun. The Crew made their very own salt dough fossils. Once they’ve dried out, we’ll be painting them and keeping them safe for our annual Art Expo. These little treasures are going to be such a special part of our collection.

We completed a perceptual worksheet where the Crew coloured in a dinosaur, cut it into pieces, and then stuck it back together again like a puzzle. It’s amazing to see how far their cutting skills have come and how confident they’re becoming with handling scissors. They really impressed us with this activity.

In another fun task, the Crew counted dinosaurs on a worksheet and circled the correct number. Their ability to recognise and count from 1 to 10 has become much more solid and consistent. It’s so rewarding to see their progress in numeracy and how comfortably they can now identify these numbers.

Movement fun this week came in the form of dinosaur dances. These were such a hit and absolutely adorable to watch. If you’re looking for a way to burn off some of that endless energy at home, search for dinosaur dances on YouTube—there are plenty of options and they’re sure to get everyone moving and grooving.

We also spent some time on letter work with our focus on “d.” The Crew traced the letter, thought of words that begin with it, and coloured in themed pictures. It’s always a joy to watch their ideas come to life on paper and to see how their creativity shines through in even the simplest tasks.

For a bit of outdoor fun, we went digging for dinosaurs in the sandpit. Each child had a turn uncovering hidden dinos and used paintbrushes to gently dust them off before returning them to their tubs. It was such a lovely hands-on way to reinforce the learning we’ve done around fossils and palaeontology.

We missed Teacher Yoga this week as she wasn’t feeling well, but the Crew still had a wonderful week full of adventure and learning. They’ve really given it their all and should be so proud of everything they’ve accomplished.

Just one more week to go before we head off on a well-earned holiday.

Next week’s theme: Occupations and People Who Help Us.

What a fun two weeks of learning all about dinosaurs!

Dino Time! A Fun Adventure into the World of Dinosaurs!

Hi little explorers!

Are you ready to stomp, roar, and chomp like a dinosaur? Let’s go back in time—waaaay back—to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth!

What Are Dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs were BIG reptiles that lived a long, long time ago—before there were people, cars, or even toys! Some dinosaurs were as tall as buildings, and some were small enough to fit in a bathtub!

Meet Some Dino Friends:

Tyrannosaurus Rex – This dino had tiny arms but a BIG mouth full of sharp teeth. Can you give your loudest ROAR?

Triceratops – He had three horns on his head and a big frill like a crown. What a cool dino!

Brachiosaurus – Sooo tall! He had a super long neck to reach leaves way up high in the trees!

Stegosaurus – This dino had bony plates on his back and a spiky tail. Watch out!

What Did Dinosaurs Eat?

Some dinosaurs liked to munch on plants (like broccoli and leaves!), and others liked to eat meat. Plant-eaters are called herbivores, and meat-eaters are called carnivores. Can you guess which is which?

 Dino Fun at Home!

Draw your favorite dinosaur – Don’t forget the spikes and tails!

Stomp like a dino – March around like a giant dinosaur!

Sing a dino song – Make up a silly tune about dinosaurs!

Dino Fact.

Did you know that paleontologists are scientists who dig up dinosaur bones? They find dino skeletons in the ground and put them back together like puzzles!

We listened to some fun songs with even more information about Dinosaurs. Even our worksheets were dinosaur themed! During these two weeks we concentrated on cutting skills, drawing of shapes, and counting and colouring. We worked on our fine motor skills where we had to do some tearing and sticking. The Hoppers told me this was a big job teacher C. (so funny)

For FunFit Sports this week, Coach Trevor continued improving our hand-eye coordination with catching and batting. Our Happy Hoppers are getting so good with this activity.

Yoga Day

Today was Dinosaur Yoga.

We marched and stomped, roared like a Dinosaur, balanced like an airplane, rolling around in happy baby pose and calmed our breath like a baby Dinosaur.

Ending off with a sequence of a tree, cat, cow, dog, snake poses.

Just one week left of term two, gosh where has the time gone.

Thank you for all the support we got on Concert Day. This was truly well supported in spite of the weather being cold. We still had a blast at our Space Concert.

See you next time, little dino explorers! Keep roaring and discovering!

What an exciting two weeks we have had, with a super awesome theme to get everyone even more excited!! Because who doesn’t love Dinosaurs!?! These Busy Bugs have non-stop stomped and roared their way through the classrooms and we have loved every second of it!

It is so incredible to hear how much these little people know about dinosaurs and it’s even more incredible to hear them perfectly pronounce some of the incredibly challenging dinosaur names! We have spoken about Herbivores and Carnivores, as well as all of the “basic” dinosaurs like T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptors, Pterodactyl and Brontosaurus. We have also delved a little deeper into the lesser known dinosaurs such as the Mosasaurus (who looks like a very big whale with huge teeth!), the Ankylosaurs (this dino had a spiky, almost turtle like shell on his back and spikes on his tail) and even the Pachycephalosaurus (packy-sefa-lo-saurus)- just in case you were wondering how to say that giant word 😉 who had a giant “egg” shaped bubble on his head that was thought to be used to ram into things such as trees and bigger dinosaurs. We have loved watching the Bugs reactions to these incredible, extinct creatures and how they absorb everything that is said to them. We also learned all about fossils, how they are formed and who the people who dig them up and study them are, another very big word, Palaeontologist.

The Bugs took our Dinosaur toys outside to “explore” our playground. The Dinosaur (and the Bugs) had so much sliding, munching on the trees, visit the Happy Hoppers classroom and jumping off of the tyres.

For our art activities over these 2 weeks, the Bugs used our Dinosaur toys, dipped their feet in paint and let them “walk” all over their page.

We also made another exciting Dino art piece, but we are keeping those safe for art expo!

We danced around to Dinosaur Stomp, Baby T-Rex and Walk The Dinosaur, as well as watched a few clips from the Jurassic Park/World movies (don’t worry, all the clips were age appropriate).

We can’t believe Term 2 is over! We have loved every minute with these Bugs and can’t wait for the holidays to be over so we can get back to having fun!

Dinosaur Adventures! 🦕🦖

What a roar-some week we’ve had with our dino-loving Pups! This week’s theme was all about dinosaurs, and the little explorers absolutely stomped into it with excitement.

🦖 Ring Time Roars
During ring time, we talked about what colours dinosaurs might have been—and oh, the ideas the Pups had! From rainbow dinos to glittery green T-Rexes, their imaginations were in full swing. We also made our best dinosaur noises—lots of giggles and ROOOAARRS filled the room!

🎨 Dino Art Fun
For our art activity, the Pups created their very own dinosaurs using paper plates! Each little artist painted their dino green (with a splash of creative flair, of course), and they turned out absolutely dino-mite! 🐾

🧘♀️ Dinosaur Yoga Time
In yoga, we had so much fun stomping, marching, and of course… roaring like dinosaurs! The children loved exploring poses like Warrior 3, Plank, Snake, Tree, and more. We also practiced calming yoga breaths—Butterfly, Baby Dinosaur, Snake, and our favourite: Hot Chocolate breath (complete with pretend marshmallow sniffing ☕️). It was a perfect mix of movement and mindfulness.

🎤 Concert Practice
We’ve also been working hard on our concert, and wow—our little stars are shining so bright! Full steam ahead, and they’re doing AMAZING!

🏖️ Outdoor Dino Discoveries
Week 2 brought even more fun! The pups headed outside for a dino dig in the sand—just like real paleontologists! They loved discovering hidden “fossils” and dino treasures. They also had special time with Teacher Sharon and enjoyed lots of joyful free play with their friends.

It’s been a fun-filled, stompy, creative, and super smiley week with our little dinosaurs! Can’t wait for more adventures next week! 💚🦕✨

IB Principle: Risk Takers – We explained to the Squad that being a risk taker is like being a brave adventurer! It means trying new things, even if they might not work out. When you take risks, you learn and grow, and sometimes you discover amazing things about yourself and the world around you. Imagine if you never tried riding a bike or swimming because you were afraid of falling or getting wet? You would miss out on so much fun! Taking risks helps you build confidence, make new friends, and find new passions. It’s okay to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! So, don’t be afraid to take a chance, try something new, and see where it takes you. You might just discover something amazing!

Writing and Phonics: The squad has made fantastic progress over the past two weeks, focusing on the ‘ap’ word family. They demonstrated their understanding by tracing words that end with the ‘ap’ sound, matching words to corresponding pictures, and writing sentences in their workbooks using these words. It’s impressive to see how their handwriting skills have improved, with noticeable advancements in letter formation and finger spacing. They’re also showing a great understanding of word structure such as placing them in the correct part of the “cats”. Keep up the excellent work, squad!

Mathematics: Last week we completed subtraction sums up to 20, and we were impressed to see the class grasp the concept so well – they should be proud of themselves! We also practiced counting in multiples of 2, 5, and 10. Please continue to reinforce this skill at home. This week, we worked on a worksheet where the Squad had to identify missing numbers in a sequence, focusing on the numbers that come before and after a given number.

Creative Art: Last week in art, the Squad made their own Dinosaur portraits, they made their own backgrounds followed by sponge painting their dinosaurs’ using stencils. This week the Squad made Dinosaur fossils using salt dough and painted them beautifully.

Wishing you all a lovely Holiday and keep safe.

What a busy week we have had learning about Dinosaurs! There are just so many activities to do and things to be learnt.

Teacher Tegan has done a daily A-Z on Dinosaur names. Each day we have learnt 3 more letters of Dinosaur names going in alphabetic order. Learning these Dinosaurs’ long names is a fun and tricky task. Let’s see how many they can remember:

Allosaurus, Baryonyx,Coelophysis, Diplodocus, Euoplocephalus, Fabrosaurus, Gravitholus, Hadrosaurus, Iguanodon, Janenschia, Kentrosaurus, Leptoceratops, Macroplata, Nodosaurus, Ouranosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Quetzalcoatlus, Riojasaurus, Stenonychosaurus, Tricerarops, Ultrasaurus, Velociraptor, Wannanosaurus, Xenotarsosaurus, Yingshanosaurus and the Zephyrosaurus.

We have also read a cute little novel called ‘Dino Club’ where each day we read a few chapters of the book for the Crew, Characters Jamie and Tess have an app on their tablet where they can chat to all the children around the world about Dinosaurs. Jamie finds Tess on this app and they get together to go on a Dino adventure! Venturing down into a cave where they discover a whole different world of Dinosaurs down there.

The Crew just loved this little novel!

Amongst the many different activities we have completed this week, we did a fossil like Pterodactyl made out of pasta. The Crew had to copy the example, planning where to glue next and how many pieces of pasta they would need. It came out really beautifully.

A fun little activity we did that included an outing around the school, we created dinosaur skins through a cut out brontosaurus. We walked around and each Crew member had to look around to see what background would make a pretty skin for their brontosaurus. The Crew had lots of fun with this activity and the pictures came out so beautifully!

We have also complete a few different worksheets this week, Line tracing, perceptual work sheet that consisted of colouring cutting out and pasting back together. Number tracing 1-10, matching pictures to the letters the pictures start with and an introduction worksheet to capital letters and their small letter. All Dinosaurs themed, of course!

We completed an eye spy activity where the Crew really had to concentrate on the work that they were doing. All these activities are about following instructions which we sometimes take for granted. It is a skill that needs to be taught. The Crew were instructed to look at the pictures coloured in and try to find them in amongst the collage of pictures below AND then they had to count how many they had found the write that number in the block below the coloured in picture. This was a challenging activity but I love to challenge my Crew that’s how they expand their minds and when we do an activity like this again they will do even better!

We have practiced our alphabet through the Letter Challenge this past term. However I do encourage you as parents to go over the letters in the holidays. The Crew need to be able to recognition each letter, know the SOUND the letter makes and start forming the letters correctly. (Going over the letters just with their finger is a great start)

FunFit Sports was the BEST! The Crew were introduced to a new ball skilled game, T-Ball. And they had to run to the different bases as well. It was an absolute ball LOL, pun intended. Let’s go Curious Crew, Let’s go.

At the closing of this term we say good-bye to Lilly, who joined us for a short period of time while her and her family visited South Africa from Saudi Arabia and we also say good-bye to Kudiwanashe (Kudi) who’s family will be immigrating shortly in the new term.

We hope you all have an amazing August holiday! Rest well and we look forward to all the exciting events that await us in the new term such as:

  • Puzzle Challenge
  • Art expo
  • Mommy/Daddy and me yoga
  • Curious Crew market day

What a fun two weeks of learning all about dinosaurs!

There was so much knowledge for our Happy Hoppers to absorb, and WOW! They did so well!

They learnt all about the diverse types of dinosaurs … ones that used to swim and ones that used to fly, even though not all flying dinosaurs had feathers. They even remembered big words like Pterodactyl, Pterosaurs, Paleontologist and when the first fossils were discovered (over two hundred years ago!)

We listened to some fun songs with even more information about dinosaurs. Even our worksheets were dinosaur themed! During these two weeks we concentrated on cutting skills, drawing of shapes, counting and colours. Our beautiful artwork of a dinosaur shadow will be displayed at the Art show. Our Happy Hoppers are getting so excited to show all their creativity!

For FunFit Sports this week, Coach Trevor carried on improving our hand-eye coordination with catching and batting. Our Happy Hoppers are getting so good with this activity.

Yoga Day was all about dinosaurs too!

We marched and stomped, roared, rolled around in happy baby pose and calmed our breath like a baby Dinosaur.

Ending off with a sequence of tree, cat, cow, dog, snake poses.

Enjoy the well-deserved break! It was a busy term. We can’t wait for the new adventures that lie ahead for Term 3.

These past two weeks always land up being very WILD and LOUD! Raaaawrrrrr!!!!

A huge favourite amongst our boys and girls. We have had so much fun exploring the magical world of dinosaurs these two past weeks.

It is amazing how much the Pups already know about these amazing, legendary and extinct creatures… what IS IT about DINOSAURS?!

We spoke about all sorts of dinosaurs and we were extremely impressed with the pronunciation of these little people. Some Pups could say Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Pterodactyl, Triceratops… the list goes on! We learnt that some dinosaurs were soooo big and others were a lot smaller. Some had feathers and some had scales! Some could fly, some could swim, some walked on two legs and had tiny little arms, and some walked on four legs and had really big feet like an elephant! Some had exceptionally long, sharp, scary teeth and they ate meat! We call them carnivores! Others had smaller teeth and ate plants, and they are called herbivores! We don’t know exactly what the dinosaurs looked like, but we think they looked something like lizards do now!

So, when we painted our dinosaur art this week, we made sure to make it very colourful! Oh, what FUN we had!We made a special surprise dinosaur which you will see at our art show. We also made some fun dinosaur facemasks which the Pups were able to take home and show Mom and Dad how well the can STOMP, STOMP,STOMP!. The Pups loved our sensory activity.

We added sand to our messy play table and hid some dinosaur eggs and allowed the Pups to use a paint brush to clean the eggs and collect all the different dinosaurs, it obviously didn’t end there because we added big dinosaurs in the sand, and all of the Pups just went CRAZY when they saw all the dinosaurs around them.

We have had a fantastic two weeks, but we can tell the children are tired, sick of winter and in need of a break, and Teacher Net too! Hee Hee!

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and see you all soon!

Dd – Dinosaur

These past two weeks have landed up being very WILD and LOUD!

Oh, what FUN we had! We made a special surprise dinosaur which you will see at our art show. We also made some fun making dinosaur headbands. The Pups loved our sensory activity. It was dinosaur eggs. We used plastic dinosaurs inside frozen water balloons.

We have had a fantastic two weeks, but we can tell the children are tired, sick of winter and in need of a break! Please remember to fill in your holiday club forms in if you want your child to attend holiday club.

PLEASE remember to label EVERYTHING that comes to school with your child. Please also remember to cut nails.

Next theme: Term 3 – Spring flowers and planting.

Dd – Dinosaur

We have also delved a little deeper into the lesser known dinosaurs such as the Mosasaurus (who looks like a very big whale with huge teeth!), the Ankylosaurs (this dino had a spiky, almost turtle like shell on his back and spikes on his tail) and even the Pachycephalosaurus (packy-sefa-lo-saurus)- just in case you were wondering how to say that giant word 😉 who had a giant “egg” shaped bubble on his head that was thought to be used to ram into things such and trees and bigger dinosaurs. We have loved watching the Bugs reactions to these incredible, extinct creatures and how they absorb everything that is said to them. We also learned all about fossils, how they are formed and who the people who dig them up and study them are, another very big word, Palaeontologist.

We did a Dino dig expedition by taking a trip to the sandpit and everyone had a chance to dig and uncover buried dinosaur bones. How exciting!?

The Bugs took our Dinosaur toys outside to “explore” our playground. The Dinosaur (and the Bugs) had so much sliding, munching on the trees, visit the Happy Hoppers classroom and jumping off of the tyres.

For our art activities over these 2 weeks, the Bugs used our Dinosaur toys, dipped their feet in paint and let them “walk” all over their page.

We gave each table of Bugs a Dinosaur toy to copy and free draw. This is an excellent activity fr hand-eye coordination.

We made the most delicious Dinosaur cookies that the Bugs helped measure out ingredients, mix, cut out, bake and then ice.

We can’t believe Term 2 is almost over! We have loved every minute with these Bugs and can’t wait for the holidays to be over so we can get back to having fun!
