Uu – Under

What a full and fun two weeks we have had. This is such a wonderful theme to learn about especially for the EcoKids as this theme is close to what we represent. There is so much unnecessary trash and plastic that finds its way into our oceans every day and we need to all find a way to stop this problem as it is killing our marine life, polluting the waters and slowly killing our home. We focused a lot on our moral conscious theme this week of ocean environmental awareness. We sure hope the message has sunk in!

We spoke about all the animals we find in the oceans! We learnt about turtles and sea horses – did you know the daddy sea horse looks after all the babies? So interesting! We learnt about Clown fish (Nemo!) and Blue Tangs (Dori!) and about star fish. Sea snails, octopi and jelly fish! We learnt that jelly fish have quite a sting! And not to be scared to go swimming in the ocean because of sharks. Sharks are not monsters – they do not like to eat people! We learnt about seals and sea lions, whales, and crabs! What a lot to learn about! Some of these animals have stings or spikes, some have sharp teeth, and some have claws and pincers!  What a lot to learn about!

We made a lovely jelly fish with a paper plate and some ribbon and string, and the Pups really loved painting this art piece. Well done!

Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend! Next week is going to so much fun cooking and eating fun in our classroom! We will send things home as we make them.

This week has just flown by it has been so busy with all the preparation going on for our big day next week Friday!

The Pups and I were busy finishing off some of our art pieces. It has all just been mind blowing to say the very least. The Pups and Teachers have worked very hard planning and preparing for out amazing art show taking place on Friday the 20th of October. This year is going to be a goodie. Please support us and remember to buy your tickets. I’m sure when you see all the challenging work that has gone into the event you will be glad that you joined us to have a blast.

No art will go out this week as I mentioned earlier, we only concentrated on our art pieces. We did however play a lot of fantasy and made-up games which was great for the imagination.

For the next few weeks, we will be concentrating on assessments.

Please may I ask you again to please label all your child’s belongings as there are still many items coming to school that are not labelled.

 Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!

Wow the weeks are just flying by so quickly now. This week we learnt all about Frogs and Ponds, Rivers and Dams. It was a very interesting topic for all but our boys seemed to enjoy this theme more than our girls. We looked at many different pictures of frogs and ponds.

We tried to explain that frogs are amphibians which means they are able to live on land and in the water. They have big eyes; webbed feet and their skin is smooth and moist. Most of them live in water but other species live in trees or burrow into the ground. We made a make shift little pond where we could show the Pups some tadpoles and explain to them that tadpoles are baby frogs. The Pups definitely learn and understand better when they can see and touch objects that we are leaning about. One thing is for sure our clever Pups definitely know what a frog is!

The Pups had so much fun this week jumping/leaping around all over the classroom. These little people are so cute and I have a good giggle most days at the funny things they do. The best part of our week was that we got to go next door to see a real pond which was so cool.

We did some finger painting and we made some cool green jelly and put some jelly tots in the jelly to represent some frog eggs in their own mini pond.

It was a great sunshine filled week with lots of dancing, singing and learning.

Please may I ask you to send hats for the Pups as we are having some very hot weather at the moment.

Have a super weekend and see you Monday!

What another lovely week spent with the Pups! I must say these little people have really crept into my heart. I don’t know how I’m going to let them go next year when they spread their wings and move to the Busy Bugs class. They are all so unique and special in their own way!

This week we learnt about insects this week. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…. What an awesome sound to hear! And what a fun theme to learn about! We spent this week learning about all the insects that hide away in our gardens.

Butterflies, Bees, Grasshoppers, Caterpillars, Ants, Snails and Praying Mantis’s. We looked at pictures of them, learnt what noises they make and how they get from here to there.

Of course, one of our favourite bugs to learn about was the Bee. We loved learning about the noise bees make and most importantly, that bees make delicious yummy honey!

We went on a nature walk to see which insects we could see.

For art this week, the Pups made bees using eggboxes for the bodies and wax paper for the wings. These turned out so beautifully. The Pups also made a symmetrical butterfly. The technique was awesome where you spoon a few blobs of paint onto one half of the page then you fold it over and “smooch” the paint onto the other half which makes a great multi coloured butterfly. I think we should keep this colourful art piece for our art show.

We hope you have a lovely weekend, see you on Monday!

What a lovey week we had with our Pups. We spoke all about different cultures. This is a difficult theme for our little Pups to understand. We discussed that culture includes material goods, the things the people use and produce. Culture is also the belief and values of the people and the ways they think about and understand the world and their own lives. Different countries have different cultures. We told the Pups that different countries speak different languages and eat different foods. When told them we live in South Africa. We read some lovely stories about different countries and then I think they got a better understanding of what we trying to explain to them.

We also had so much fun playing games and playing with water and bubbles. We have also been making our amazing photo frames and cannot wait to show off your children’s AMAZING school photos to you!

We did a lot of painting for the Art Expo that is coming up and our Pups can’t wait to show off their hard work. There was also so much excitement for Friday’s Hat Parade which was totally amazing. We saw so much creativity and hard work that was put into this event. This was truly such an amazing day and so much fun and laughter had by all. To all the parents, thank you so much for all your hard work, love and support.

We had a very busy and exciting week! Spring is definitely in the air and we are having to strip down children of all the layers by playtime! What a wonderful time of the year. This week was all about spring and flowers and we chatted about the warmer weather and what happens when it gets warm! The sun rises earlier so we don’t have to wake up in the dark! We don’t have to wear so much clothing to school or else we will get too hot! The sun shines down on us and we have to start wearing sun hats. It is time for lots of water and sunscreen. When the warmer weather comes, the rain also comes! Rain is very good for the Earth and we need it so that the plants grow. We start seeing little blossoms and tiny green leaves on the plants and trees and that means it is definitely spring! The most wonderful season! The bees start buzzing around and pollinating the flowers so in summer time we can have yummy fruit! The Pups went on a wonderful nature walk om our very first day back at school. We found all sorts of sticks, dry grass bark and twigs. We were looking up the big tree at the far end of the plot and saw some beautiful birds that the Pups found extremely fascinating. What a blessing it is to be able to walk around and enjoy nature when nature is your theme!

In order to understand the moral theme of the week, we sang our school song a lot as it talks all about how much we love nature and the plants and trees, and how we never step on bugs because we are the children of EcoKids! In this way we learned about respecting nature. Our children know that when we find a bug or a spider, a frog or even a snake, we let it go so it can go home to it’s mommy and daddy. Also, it is important to teach our Pups that plants in the garden are growing! And alive! So if you want to pick a flower or two, that’s okay, but we don’t need to pull off leaves or pick all the flowers because plants belong in nature!    What made this week even more special was that we had three new little Pups start their school journey with us and we have been so happy to welcome them! Little Conner, Colton and Hunter M. Welcome to the EcoKids family!

For our art activity this short week we used tennis balls to do some stamping onto a flower which the Pups absolutely enjoyed. There were a couple of Pups that decided it would be fun to through the tennis balls full of paint at their friends instead of stamping paint onto their flower. This was so much fun and there was paint everywhere. So much fun! As always, please keep nails short and label all items coming to school. A lot of children have the same water bottles so please label your child’s bottle in a distinctive way and show them how you have done it so they know which one is theirs.

Next week’s theme: Trees, Plants, Wood and Paper

Photograph week! It was quiet a challenging time to get our small little Pups to smile and see all the lights and the big camera. Overall they were so brave and I cant wait to see their beautiful photographs.

For our art we made a tall tree using a paper towel roll for the trunk and a piece of cardboard for branches. The Pups loved painting this with their friends.

On Friday we did a short obstacle course in the Pups garden which included climbing over and under obstacles and throwing tennis balls into a bin. They all just loved this so much.

Well done to all our little Pups for being so amazing and helping with our new smaller little Pups.

Have a beautiful weekend!

Dd – Dinosaur

These past two weeks have landed up being very WILD and LOUD! Raaaawrrrrr!!!!

A huge favourite amongst our boys and girls. We have had so much fun exploring the magical world of dinosaurs these two past weeks.

It is amazing how much the Pups already know about these amazing, legendary and extinct creatures… what IS IT about DINOSAURS?!

We spoke about all sorts of dinosaurs and we were extremely impressed with the pronunciation of these little people. Some Pups could say brachiosaurus, tyrannosaurus, pterodactyl, triceratops… the list goes on! We learnt that some dinosaurs were soooo big and others were a lot smaller. Some had feathers and some had scales! Some could fly, some could swim, some walked on two legs and had tiny little arms, and some walked on four legs and had really big feet like an elephant! Some had exceptionally long, sharp, scary teeth and they ate meat! We call them carnivores! Others had smaller teeth and ate plants, and they are called herbivores! We don’t know exactly what the dinosaurs looked like, but we think they looked something like lizards do now!

So, when we painted our dinosaur art this week, we made sure to make it very colourful! Oh, what FUN we had! We made a special surprise dinosaur which you will see at our art show. We also made some fun making dinosaur headbands. The Pups loved our sensory activity. It was dinosaur eggs. We used plastic dinosaurs inside frozen water balloons.

We have had a fantastic two weeks, but we can tell the children are tired, sick of winter and in need of a break! Please remember to fill in your holiday club forms in if you want your child to attend holiday club.

PLEASE remember to label EVERYTHING that comes to school with your child. Please also remember to cut nails.

Nn – Night

This theme we covered over two weeks. The first week we just touched on Space as we were so busy practising and preparing for the concert.

This is one of the SCHOOL’S favourite themes! We love how much room for exploration and learning there is with this theme. With that being said, Space is a difficult concept to explain to a 2-year-old! It is difficult to get them to understand that they live in a country called South Africa, never mind a planet called Earth, in a galaxy that is bigger than they could ever understand! So, we spent a lot of time talking about things that they do understand because they can SEE them, such as stars, rockets, the moon, and astronauts! We spoke about the planets and the solar system, and we feel that they really did understand the concepts we were trying to get across!

For our art, this week we created two beautiful space pictures. The first one is a surprise to see but we can tell you it involved marble rolling which the Pups thoroughly enjoyed. The second art activity is the one they brought home. They made a rocket out of shapes the teachers cut the shapes out and we guided the Pups as to where to place their shapes on a black piece of paper. After that we used white paint and a toothbrush to splatter paint over the rocket to look like it was in space and surrounded by stars.

The concert was a tremendous success and I have to say the Pups were so brave and I am extremely proud of them!

Have a lovely, relaxed weekend.

Wow! What a busy, busy week we have had! Where do I even begin?

We started off the week by making the cutest turtles. The Pups loved painting the shells green and then printing yellow toilet roll circles on them. Teacher Cecilia helped with sticking the heads, eyes, and legs wherever they showed her too. The Pups loved learning about all the reptiles and at ring time most of the Pups could tell me the names of the reptiles on the theme board. We learnt that reptiles have scaly skins and that they are usually found under rocks or basking in the warm sun.

Julian from the Wild Ones put on a lovely reptile show for us on Wednesday, he came with all the diverse types of reptiles, insects, rodents and many other animals. The Pups thoroughly enjoyed the show, many of them got to touch Pandora the snake and the Tarantula spiders, some Pups were braver than Teacher Cecilia was!  Julian did such an excellent job, and we always look forward to seeing him every year during our reptile week!

It’s really such a busy time of year at the moment as we have so much going on. We are practicing for the concert next week and the Pups are enjoying dancing and singing our concert songs.

I am totally enjoying my Pups and love them so much!

We hope you have a lovely weekend, there is a cold front coming so keep warm!

Ww – Winter

The Pups had so much fun exploring this interesting and fun theme! We started off the week by doing an amazing “water colour” painting with food colouring and an ice block! The children loved to touch the ice block which we used as a brush and explore the different sensations on their fingertips! The idea was to drag the wet ice block over drops of food colouring on a piece of paper. The water from the ice block made beautiful patterns with the food colouring and afterwards, the children sprinkled salt over their creations to make it look even more interesting and unique. The salt brought out the true colour of the food colouring to create truly spectacular patterns and paintings.

We did some concert practice. Singing, dancing and having fun.

On Wednesday morning we spent a fun time playing with balloons (and practicing to blow them up!) and then we played with our playdough to exercise cold fingers! Teacher Cecilia made a snowman for all the pups to see an example of what they could make out of salt dough. We then let the children create exactly what they wanted, and we are so proud of the results! The children had an absolute blast making their salt dough snowmen. They are all so unique and we have decided to keep them for our art show.

The children had a great week learning all about winter, although they know all about what’s cold and what’s not, so they were able to tell us so much this week! We are very proud of how well they are all talking and growing up so nicely. Well done little Pups!

Dd – Daddy

Wow another week that has flown by so quickly. The Pups were super busy this week.

We discussed one very important family member in our families, our dads. We spoke about what it means to be a daddy and that we all love our dads so much. We discussed different jobs dads do. We just “LOVE OUR DADS” I had the Pups saying “love daddy” over and over. So cute!

We made a very special card for our daddies and we threaded a loop to hang on our Father’s Day keyring. We also did some baking with our beautiful Pups. We made a special “hammer” biscuit for our dads. This was so much fun.

The Pups are all just growing so fast and learning so much each and every day. Can’t they just stay small forever?

Today we had our bike-a-thon which was so cool busy and so much fun.

Please can you make a big effort to label all belongings.

Have a wonderful long week-end and keep warm!

Rr- Recycling

What an important theme this is to all of us at EcoKids Preschool!  This is what we are all about!  This is who we are!  We had a wonderful and informative week, learning all about recycling and reusing instead of just throwing things away.  We learnt an awesome new song:

“Reduce, reuse, recycle

Recycle, Recycle,

Reduce, reuse, recycle,

It’s easy to do!

Coz your trash and my trash

Make up way too much trash!

Reduce, reuse, recycle

It’s easy to do!”

And our Pups have been heard singing it all week!  We learnt that there are four main types of things that are recycled.  Paper, plastic, glass and tins.  And, a lot of the rubbish that we don’t recycle lands up in the oceans where it hurts sea creatures and pollutes the water!

We chatted about all the art that we do and the children saw that every week, we use recycled materials to make our beautiful art pieces!  We took a walk to the recycling station and saw the different containers and the BIG, BIG truck that comes to fetch the recycling when we have filled all the bins!

We played lots of sorting games, too, making sure the children knew which dustbin in our classroom was the right one for the paper or tin or plastic we gave them.  We done, Pups!

For art this week the Pups and teachers worked together. We got them to sprinkle grated wax crayon on wax paper, we then took old plastic bags that say RECYCLE and we cut them out so they could go in the middle of the wax paper with the wax crayons. Teacher Thandy  and Teacher Pearl then took an iron and ironed the wax paper and it created this stunning mix of colours which we have placed on formula tins creating an upcycled “dustbin“ for your bread plastics and bread tags to go in. Once you and your Pup/Pup’s fill the tin, please bring it to school so that we can use them for our nappy changing stations for our little ones – we are always REDUCING, REUSING, AND RECYCLING!

We explored a lot this week with all sorts of recycling materials and let the Pups have some free range and choices to make their own creations. This was so interesting to see all the different outcomes

We are also in process of doing reports so you can read all about your precious Pups when we break-up.

Another amazing event that happened this week is that two more Pups joined our class, which is so wonderful!

Please have a wonderful and blessed weekend.

Keep warm! Take your vitamins and extra vitamin C!
